Description

Nov. 10, 1931. I L. H. SCHWARZ 1,831,267
51 1mm FOR TROLLING Filed Feb. 18. 1928 401216 /1 ficfzwa zz INVENTOR ATTORNEY Patentecl Nov. 10, 1931 UNITED STATES PATENT GFFIQE LOUIS H. SGEWARZ, OF DETROIT, MICHIGAN, ASSIGNOR- TO THE L. S; BAIT COMPANY, OF DETROIT, MICHIGAN, A CORPORATION OF MICHIGAN SPINNER non TROLLING Application filed February 18, 1928. Serial No. 255,259.
This invention relates to improvements in spinners for trolling. It is an object of the invention to provide a spinner consisting of a piece of material so flexed that it will rotate as it is drawn through the water, and
whlch has its rear portion, to which a hookis attached, offset with regard to its front portion, so that as the spinner rotates the rear portion describes a circle having its radius substantially equal to the amount of the offset, with the result that the movement of the rear portion, as it travels, is in the form of a spiral.
Another object of the invention is to provide such a spinner which can be cheaply and easily made out of ordinary flat stock.
The construction of the spinner and its movement as it travels through the water more fully described with the aid of the accompanying drawings, in which:
Figure 1 illustrates one View of the invention.
Figure 2 shows the blank out of which the spinner is made.
Figure 3 is a view of the spinner when turned at a different angle, and
Figure 4 is a diagrammatic view showing the path of the front and rear portions of the spinner as it is drawn through the water.
Figure 2 shows a blank of substantially uniform width throughout its entire length from which the spinner is made, and consists of front and rear portions 2 and 3 respectively connected by a. laterally inclined intermediate portion 4, so that the extremities of the portions 2 and 3 while almost parallel are not in alignment with one another.
The intermediate portion 4 is flexed sub stantially centrally of its length transverscly at 5, and the rear portion 3 is again bent at 6 in the opposite direction to counteract the inclination imparted by the bend The spinner then presents the appearance shown in Figures 1, 3 and according to the position from which it is viewed. 7 and 8 indieate openings in proximity to the front and rear extremities respectively, the former for a swivel connection 9 and the latter for 3 a hook ll. 10 designates a conventional line attached to the swivel for drawing the spinner along.
As the spinner is drawn through the water the latter exerts pressure against the surface 12 between thebends 5 andG .andcauses the of the front and rear portions. It will be 7 found that the rotation of the spinner, the two sides of which are preferably differently colored, say white on one side and red on the other, and the spiral movement of its rear portion and the hook form a very effective bait.
lNhile in the foregoing the preferred construction of the invention has been described and shown, it is understood that modifications may be made thereto provided they fall within the scope of the appended claim.
VVhat I claim as my invention and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
A spinner for trolling comprising a striplike member of uniform thickness the blank for which is substantially S-shaped, the memher being flexed laterally in one direction substantially centrally of its length and in the opposite direction adjacent its rear e2;- tremity so that the front and rear portions of the member while almost parallel with one another are not in alignment with one another, the front end of said member being provided with means for attachment for a line, and the rear end of said member being provided with means for attaching a hook so that as said member is drawn through the water the front portion rotates about its lonrear portion.
