This invention relates to a holder or coverpiece for four-in-hand neckties, and has for its object, broadly, to provide a holder as a substitute for the knot usually tied by the wearer of the necktie, said cover piece or hold er to be of such simple construction that it may be conveniently and economically manufactured and will be convenient in use.

One of the objects of the invention is to provide a fastener, cover-piece or holder which may be reversed. Another object is to provide a necktie holder or cover-piece which will be elastic. The invention also includes a cover-piece or holder for neckties of such form that it will operate to advantage when used in connection with turn over collars so that it will fit snugly at the junction of the two connected ends of the collar and will completely fill the space at the ends of said collar, and will cover the collar button usually employed for connecting said ends. Still another object is to provide such a construction that the fastener or holder may have a greater or lesser degree of longitudinal divergence in form for receiving larger or bulky neckties or those of attenuated form.

With the foregoing objects in view and others to be mentioned hereinafter the invention presents a new and useful construction,

combination and arrangement of parts as described herein and claimed, and as illustrated in the accompanying drawings, it being understood that changes may be made in form, size, proportion and minor details, said changes being within the scope of the invention as claimed.

In the drawings, Fig. 1 is a side view of a necktie fastener or holder embodying my invention.

Figs. 8 and 9 show a modified form of the invention to permit a greater degree of divergence in form, Fig. 8 being a side view and Fig. 9 showing the rear side of the holder in closed or fastened position. Referring now to the drawings for a more particular description, the invention is shown and described in connection with a necktie 12 and collar 13, these being of conventional forpi and the necktie being in four-in-hand sty e.

In order that the objects first mentioned may be attained, the cover-piece or holder 14: consists of a rubber or other resilient strip 15 disposed between and engaged by two fabric strips 16 and 17 of yielding material which are suitably connected at their edges by stitches w. The parts mentioned provide a cover-piece, the fabrics 16 and 17 for the opposed sides of the holder preferably being the same as used for the necktie. However, different colors may be used for the two sides of the holder if desired, and an emblem, design or indicating character 18 may be used if desired, the same to be stamped, printed or woven in the goods.

The cover-piece thus provided is elastic, flexible, and may be readily folded to encircle the end-portions of the necktie, and may be reserved to present either of its sides to the front of the necktie.

In order that the cover-piece or holder may be secured in operative position on the necktie as a substitute for the usual knot, and in order that it may be detached therefrom, and also may be reversed, snap-fasteners are provided for the opposed sides of the device, near the edges thereof, and two pairs of these fasteners may be used, or, as shown in Figs. 8 and 9, a single pair may be used.

Each pair of snap-fasteners includes a member aving a stud 19 provided with a shank or detent 20 as best shown in Fig. 4 of the drawings, the other member of said pair 1 bein a socket 21 for receiving the stud, the shan or detent for the socket being indicated at 22. It will be understood that, since the stud 19 extends outwardly of one side of the coverpiece, the socket 21 opening upon the opposite side of the cover-piece, said coverpiece may be connected at its edges after it has been folded to the positions shown in Figs. 5, 6, 7, 9, and 10 for receiving the endportions of the necktie, the members 19 and 21 operating the same as ordinary snap-fasteners.

Also it will be seen that the cover-piece or holder 14 may be reversed and may be con- 20 nected by the fasteners since the studs 19 and sockets 21 are disposed upon opposed sides of the cover-piece or holder.

The function discharged by the elastic strip 15 is to cause the holder to compress the neck- 25 tie so that any sliding movement thereon will be prevented, and to maintain the compressed parts of the necktie in a circular form.

Numeral 23 indicates a semi-circular part of the holder this being of advantage so that the end-portions of the collar willvbe covered. The ends of the collar are generally mounted upon a collar button (not shown) and on account of the curvature of the part 23 the collar button may also be covered by the holder 14.

It will be appreciated that the use of a single pair of snap-fasteners will be of advantage if the necktie is of large size or bulky, since the holder will provide a greater degree of diver ence than would be provided if two pairs 0% snap-fasteners was employed.

Since the rubber strip 15 will cause compression of that part of the necktie adjacent to the connected ends of the collar, this compression may be depended upon for preventing any sliding movement of the holder from said position.

When removed from the necktie the holder 14 will assume the flat position shown in Figs. 3 and 4 by action of the rubber strip 15, and

when placed in position upon the necktie as shown in Fig. 10 it will compress the necktie in a manner to prevent a sliding movement thereon, the fabric, indicated at 16 and 17 yielding to the action of the rubber strip in a degree sufiicient for this purpose.

I claim as my invention,--

1. In a necktie holder, a cover consisting of a pair of fabric strips of yielding material and a fiat resilient strip between and tending to resist bending of the first named strips, said strips being adapted to compress the encircled end-portions of the necktie, and a pair of snap-fasteners upon the opposed edges for maintaining the cover in position.
