A still further object is to provide an improved separable bottom stop for slide fasteners, the separable portions of which may be secured directly to the material on which the fastener sections are mounted. Y
Stili another object of my invention is to provide improved means for retaining the slider in position on one Stringer while the other Stringer is completely separated therefrom.
A more specific object is to provide means for retaining the slider in position at the end of one Stringer which is actuated by the resilient properties of the corded edge tape of the fastener stringer.
With the above and other objects in view, the present invention may be said to com prise the separable bottom stop as illustrated in the accompanying drawings hereinafter described, and particularly set forth in the appended claims, together with such variations and modifications thereof as will be apparent to one skilled in the art to which the invention appertains.

Referring to the drawings in which like numerals refer to like parts throu hout the several views, separable fasteners o the type employed for continuously securing flexible flaps together along their adjoining edge portions are shown in Fi 1 to 3. Fastener elements 1 are attache at closely spaced points to the adjoining edges of the flats or fastener tapes 2, and are so formed for interlocking engagement, the fastener tapes 2 being secured to the adjacent edges of the article to be closed or fastened by' the fastener. These fastener elements 1 are progressively guided into and out of interlocking engagement by means of a slider A which is mounted for sliding movement on the fastener elements 1. The slider Avembodies a pair of s aced wing portions 4 overlying the outer si es of the fastener elements. The wing portions 4 are united at one end by an integral web 5. having angular cam surfaces 6 formed thereon. The cam surfaces intersect along the longitudinal axis of the slider A and serve to separateV the fastenerelements 1 when an opening movement is impartedto the slider. An opening 8 is formed in the win 4 adjacent the raised portions forming t e cam surfaces 6 through which a cord or suitable strip of fabric is passed and tied to provide the ull member 9 for actuating the slider A.
T e separable bottom stop B, as shown 4 to 6, comprises two members 10 and 11 adapted to be interlocked with each other, each of which is secured to a fastener tape 2 adjacent to the endmost fastener element 1 mounted thereon.
The bottom stop members 10 and 11 are both of single piece construction and each is provided with a pair of spacedtongues 12 and 13.
The bottom stop members 10 and 11, as shown in Fig. 4, are preferably formed to the approximate thiclmess of the fastener elements and are provided with longitudinal shoulders 14 so that the slider A can be moved over the same and so that the bottom stop portion 11 can be removed through the slider passageway.
The flat longitudinal edge face 15 of the bottom stop member 11 is preferably provided with a projection or lug 16 positioned between its ends, and one of its ends is extended and reduced in width and thickness to provide a tongue 17 which forms a continuation of the fiat face 15, as shown in Fig. 6. The lug 16 is tapered to provide inclined 'guide surfaces on its upper and lower faces.

The flat longitudinal ed e face 18 of the bottom stop member' 10 is ormed with a depression 19 for receiving the lug 16 of the member 11 when the members are interlocked, and is further formed with a flat narrow proj ection 20 at one end, perpendicular to the face 18, and has an aperture 21 to receive the tongue 17 of the member 11. The projection 20 referably is of greater thickness than the bodjr ortion of the stop member 10, and projects eyond the top and bottom faces thereof to provide an effective stop for holding the slider A in position when the fastener ele-- ments 1 are completely disengaged, and the bottom stop members 10 and 11 are separated,
as shown in Figs. 2 and 3.
One embodiment of an important feature of the invention will now be described. Notches 30 are cut in the slider to receive the stop lug 20. With the illustrated form of stop lug 20, notches in both slider wings are required but with other forms of stops a notch in only one wing will be necessary. The side of this notch away from the stop member 10 has an inclined surface 31 forming a hooklike retaining device and an inclined guidingrsurface 32 leading to surface 31.

As shown in Figs. 1, 8 and 9, the fastener tapes 2 are mounted between the pieces of material 24 which are a part of the article which is to be opened and closed by the fastener described. Fi 10 illustrates a modifiedA means for securmg the bottom stop member to the piece of material 26. In this construction, the tape 2 is secured to the material 26 and the threads 27 are passed through the opening 22 in the bottom stop member. If desired, a second piece of material may be positioned over the tongue 12y to conceal the same, and secured thereto in the same way as the piece 26.
It is evident that by securing the bottom stop members to the tapes and the material, in either of the manners just described, the tapes cannot be easily torn from the material, and the tongues 12 and 13 of the bottom stop members are substantially concealed.
The separable bottom stop B remains closed while the fastener elements 1 are interlocked, because of the tongue 17 of the member which extends through the aperture 21 of the member 10 and prevents relative transverse movement of the members. and the lug 16 which seats in the depression 19 and prevents relativJ longitudinal shifting of the members 10 an 11.

In this hinged position, 'the' lug 16 of the member 11 clears the depression 19 of the member 10, and the memberll can be completely separated from the member .gd 10, by sliding it through the slider passage-` way as shown in Fig. 3. The engagement of the projection 20 with the hooklike surface 31 on each of the notches 30 serves to retain the slider in position as illustratedl in'Fig. gr, 3 to allow easy reinsertion of the stop member 11. The projection 20 andhooklike surface 31 are yieldingly held in engagement by the resilient action of the curved end of the corded ed e tape 2. This action causes the interio` loc ing elements to press against the slider at 33 and twist the slider clockwise thereby holding the surface 31 in contact with the projection 20.
To refasten the edges of material by interlocking the fastener elements, it is simply necessary to again insert the bottom stop por.- tion 11 into the slider A, preferably with the left hand until the tongue extends through the aperture 21 of the member 10. The slider w which is preferably being held with the right hand, is then moved along the fastener elements 1 by pulling on the pull member 9 to rock or pivot the bottom stop members until the lug 16 of the member 11 seats in the desame. at the same time bringing the lowermost Ifastener elements into interlocked position, as shown in Fig. 1.
It is readily apparent that the present 1nvention provides a very simple and efficient stop member which is separated, to completely separate the edges of the material to which the fastener elements are secured, merely by the opening movement of the slider member.

A separable end connection for a separable fastener having interlocking fastener elements mounted on flexible tapes and a slider slidably mounted thereon for moving said elements into and out of interlocking engagement, comprising a pair of interlocking sto members ada ted to be s read apart by sai slider, one o said mem ers having a depression in lits side face and a recessed projection'extending transversely from said side face, and the other of said members having a longitudinal tongue adapted to extend longitudinally through the recess in said projection and a lug on its side face adapted to extend into said depression in said first mentioned stop member, said depression being so formed that when cooperating with the lug, the end connecting members are prevented from moving transversely with respect to each other.

A separable end connection for a separable fastener having interlocking fastener elements mounted'- on flexible tapes and a slider slidably mounted thereon for moving said elements into and out of interlocking engagement, comprising a pair of interlocking stop members adapted to be spread apart by said slider, one of said members having a depressionin its side face and a recessed projection extending transversely from said side face, and the other of said members having a longitudinaltongue adapted to extend through the recess in said projection and a lug on its side face adapted to extend into said depression in said first mentioned stop member, said lug having inclined guide surfaces on its upper and lower faces, said slider when moved to disengage said fastener elements and separate said stop members being adapted .to engage the projection of said first vmentioned stop member while the other of said stop members is drawn through said slider, said depression being so formed that when cooperating with the lug, the end connecting members are prevented from moving transversely with respect to each other.

In a separable fastener a pair of fastener stringere having rows of fastener elements attached to adjacent longitudinal 130 edges of said stringers, a slider movable along said stringers to engage and Vdisengage said elements, said slider having` diverging channels causing flexing of said stringers outwardly from each other at the position of the slider, a pair of separable end connecting members on said stringers, a stop on one of said members to retain the slider thereon, the
other end connecting member being insertable and removable through the slider while adjacent said stop into and out of engagementwith its cooperating member, and cooperating means on said member having the stop and said slider operable by a relative twisting movement of the slider to retain the slider in position adjacent said stop while the opposing connecting member is disconnected, said slider being held against said retaining means by the resilient action of the stringer on which it is located.

In a separable fastener, a pair of fastener stringers having rows of cooperating fastener elements along adjacent longitudinal edges, a slider having diverging channels movable along said stringers to engage and disengage said elements, said slider flexing said stringers outwardly of each other as it passes along said stringers, and a separable end connection comprising end connecting members adjacent the ends of said rows of elements, a sto on one of said members to prevent the sli er being removed therefrom, a notch in one of the wings of said slider adapted to receive a portion of said stop, said notch being held in interlocking relation With l said stop by the resilient action of the stringer tending to twist said slider relative to the end connecting member thereby to retain said slider in position for easy removal and insertion of the opposite end connecting member.
6; A separable end connection for a separable fastener having interlocking fastener elements mounted on flexible tapes and a slider movable along the said elements to engage and disengage the same, said connection comprising a pair of end connecting memabers adapted to be disconnected to permit complete separation of the opposite sides of said fastener, one of said members having a recess in its lon itudinal face opening laterally but close both longitudinally and transversely, a projection on the longitudinal face of said other member adapted to enter said recess laterally and to be held by the walls of said recess a ainst relative transverse and longitudinal siding movement in all directions, and separate interlocking means on` said members for holding the same against lateral separation when interlocked.

A separable end connection for a separable fastener having interlocking elements mounted on flexible tapes and a slider mounted for sliding movement along said elements to engage or release the same, comprising a pair of end connecting members, said members having a cooperating depression and lug in their side faces to prevent relative transverse movement when the members are connected, one of said members having a laterally projectingV portion with an opening therethrough, and the other of said members havin a tongue extending lon itudinally with its end curved outwardly or insertion through said opening to hold the members against lateral separation.

In a separable fastener, a pair of flexible fastener stringers comprising tapes having rows of spaced fastener elements attached to their adjacent longitudinal edges, a slider movable along said stringere to en age and disengage said elements, said slider aving a Y-shaped channel through which said stringers pass durin movement of the slider and which causes exing of said tapes in the locality of the slider, a pair of separable connecting members arranged on the ends of said stringere, a projection on one of said members constituting a stop for the slider, a portion of the flexible Stringer being housed within the slider channel when said slider is against the stop whereby a twisting force is applied to thc slider, a notch in said slider having a hook-like portion adapted. to enga e over an edge of said projection and to e held against the same by said twisting force to retain the slider against accidental displacement on the end of one Stringer while the other stringer is separated therefrom.
