This invention relates to a slipping-box (hereinafter defined) for hounds; and it consists in the novel construct-ion, arrangement and combination of parts hereinafter described, and later claimed.
in all properly conducted coursing contests, whether the quarry be live or mechanical, it is essential that contesting hounds be sent away after the quarry at the same time. It is the uniform practice, therefore, to as semble the entrants in a special structure before the contest. This structure is commonly known as a slipping-box; and it is situated adjacent to the coursing-track. My object is to provide a device of this character which will afford all contestants equal opportunity for getting away in pursuit of the quarry.
In order that my invention may be clearly understood and readily carried into effect, the same is hereinafter described with reference to the accompanying drawings, in
which similar numerals indicate like parts. Of such drawings,
Fig. 1 is a perspective of my device,the cover up;
Fig. 2 is an elevation of a portion of the rear, partly broken away showing doors;
Fig. 3 is an end elevation,cover down;
Fig. 4 is a front elevation of one section of my device,the cover up. 7
In detail, my construction is as follows: Of suitable material and dimensions, I construct a box comprising a base, 2, a rear portion, 3, and two ends, 4. The box is divided by partitions, 5, into compartments, or stalls, adapted to receive the hounds. Communicating with each stall at the back is a hin ed door, 6, which may be locked. The hounds are admitted to the stalls through these doors. An upward extension of said rear portion constitutes the top, 7, of the box, which is dome shape in appearance.
The box has a cover comprised of two parts, 8 and 9, and two triangular ends, 10. Part 8 is provided with glass, or other transparent material, 11. Suitably mounted on the outside of said triangular ends, 10, are plates, 12, provided with a downwardly extending segment-gear, 13. Mounted in said ends, 10, are stud-axles, 14, extending into parts 4, which serve as bearings for segmentgears, 13. On the outside of said ends, 4, are plates, 15, provided with upwardly extending segment-gears, 16, adapted to mesh with segment-gears, 13. Plates 15 are tight on stud-axles, 17, rotatably mounted in said ends, 4. Tight, also, on said stud-axles are crank-arms, 18.
When in operative position, i. e., when the hounds are in the slipping-box, part 8 of said cover constitutes the front of the box (see Fig. 3), and part 9 supplements and functions as a secondary top for the box. But when the front has been raised to slip the hounds, part 8 of the cover is substituted in place of part 9 of the cover (see Fig. 1), and it then supplements and functions as a secondary top for the box.
The cooperaaion between segment-gears l3 and 16 is positive and effectual, and as the radius of segment-gear 16 is twice that of segment-gear 13, when the crank-arm, 18, is raised the front of the box is raised with great rapidity and all hounds which may at the time be in the slipping-box are afforded equal opportunity to pursue the quarry.
My entire structure is made in sections, joined together by means of interlocking members, 19, provided with removable pins, 20, and bolts, 21, in order to facilitate handling and transportation.
1 would have it understood that the construction herein illustrated and particularly described is intended to exemplify what is at present regarded to be the preferred embodiment of my invention, and that the invention may be otherwise and variously embodied without departing from its spirit or the scope of the subjoined claims.
Having thus described my invention, what I desire to claim and to secure by Letters Patent is 1. A slipping-box for hounds consisting of a box provided with non-communicating compartments, a movable front for said box, means for lifting said front consisting of two intermeshing segment-gears, the first of greater radius than the second and mounted on one of the ends of said box, the second of lesser radius than the first and mounted on one of the ends of said cover, journals for said segment-gears, and mean for actuating said gears. i V 1 2. A slipping-box for hounds, consisting of a series of stalls, a movable cover for said box consisting of a supplemental top, a front and triangular ends, means forlifting said 'front consisting of two intermeshing segment-gears, one mounted on one of the ends of said box and the other on one of said triangular ends, journals for saidsegmentgears, and a crank-arm for actuating said M gears. a 3. In a device of the character described, a box provided with stalls, means for opening all stalls at the same time, said means consisting of a movable cover provided with segment-gears adapted to mesh with segment-gears mounted on one of theends of said box, and a crank-arm adapted to actuate said gears.
4. In a device of the character described, stalls adapted to receive hounds,,m ean s for slipping ail hounds held within said stalls or at the same time, said means consisting of a movable cover provided with segment-gears adapted to mesh with segment-gears mounted on one of the ends of said box, and a crank-arm adapted to actuatesa-id gears. 5. A slipping-box for hounds, consisting of abase, two ends, a top and a rear; stalls tor hounds, doors for said stalls; a rotatable cover consisting of two transverse members, one serving as a front and the other as a sup- I plementary top tor said box, triangular ends forsaid cover; means for rotating said cover, the same consisting of two segment-gears adapted tormesh, the first half the radius of the second and afixed to one of said triangu- 49 lar endsflhe second twice the radius of the first and, affixed to one of the said ends of said box, bearings for said gears, and means for actuating said gears. I In testimony whereof, I have hereunto set my signature.
