This application is a continuation in part 5 of my prior application for patent for improvements 1n sewing machines filed August 6, 1926, Serial No. 127,507. The invention is shown embodied in a sewing machine comprising a table 1, a serrated work feed plate o 2, which is operated to move or feed the work automatically and as an incident to the operation of the machine; a presser foot 3 mounted on the lower end of a vertically reciprocating bar 4, anda vertically reciprocating needle bar 5 supported directly in front of the bar 4. The bars 1 and 5 operate through appropriate bearings 6 carried by the machine frame 7. The needle 8 is attachably secured to the lower end of the needle bar 5 by a suitable fastener 9. Thus, the intersection .of the vertical edge of the plate 13 thatis toward the cutter 11 with the upper side of said plate 13 forms a sharp shear corner 14 across which the work extends. From this it is clear enough that when the machine is operating and the Work extends across the sharp cutting corner 14 of the plate 13 and the disc 11 is being turned or rocked, the work will be cut or trimmed by operation of said disc 11.
The disc 11 is supported for turning movements on an axial screw 15 passing through the axis of the disc and engaging in the vertical arm 16 of a bracket, the lower arm device comprises a set screw 18 and ma be utilized to clamp the bracket 16-17 rigidly on the table 1 and to set the bracket in position in which the cutter 11 is supported in proper relationship to the stitch forming mechanism and to the cutting edge 14 of the plat/e13 as described.
I provide simplified and efficient means for operating the disc 11 by one of the reciproeating bars of the stitch forming mechanism. In the present instance, the disc 11 is operated by the needle bar 5. The operating device comprises a bracket having a collar 19 mounted on the lower end of the needle bar 5 and having an arm 20 projecting toward the front or to the rear beyond the axis of the disc 11 and having therein an elongated slot 21. The collar 19 of the bracket is rigidly fastened on the needle bar 5 by clamping said screw 22, which is removable to permit detachment and attachment of the cutter op erating device as desired. The disc 11 is formed with an annular series of holes 23 designed and adapted to receive the end of a stud 24. The walls of the holes 23 may be threaded and the end of the stud 24 may be screwed into the holes 23 selectivel and en gaged in the slot 21 as shown ig. 2) so that when the needle bar 5 reciprocates vertically, the disc 11 will be turned or rocked about its axis 15. The series of holes 23 are provided in order that the disc may be turned to different adjusted positions for operation by the needle bar. This is desirable since the cutter disc is turned only comparatively short distances to each operation of the needle bar, for by turning the disc to different adjusted positions for operation, all circumferential cutting edge portions of the disc may be used at different times.
In 0 ration, the device is mounted and assemb ed approximately in the manner shown and described. The work is placed on the table 1 and the machine is operated by the usual operating mechanism therefor with the result that the familiar work feed device 2 operates upwardly and downwardly and rearwardly and forwardly in the well known manner to move the work through the stitch forming mechanism. To permit this operation, the presser foot bar 4 is raised and lowered and to form the stitches, the needle bar 5 is raised and lowered automatically and as an incident to the operation of the machine. The raising and lowering of the needle bar 5 causes the bracket 1920 to reci rocate to impart turning movements to the disc 11, which cooperates with the sharp cutting edge 14 to cut or to trim the adjacent marginal edge of the work. By removing the stud 24 from the hole 23 in which it is located and securing the stud in another hole 23, the disc is operated in another position, another and diflcrent portion of the cutting edge being brought into action. Thus, the entire peripheral edge of the disc may be used before the disc is removed from the machine to be sharpened.
From the foregoing, it is obvious that my invention is a highl simplified and efiicient device and is ca a le of being applied to many sewing mac ines of standard construction without substantially changing or modifying any of the machine structure. The device may be manufactured and sold at comparatively low cost. The parts are strong and durable and are efficient and satisfactory in operation. The construction, arrangement and relationship of the parts may be varied within equivalent limits without departing from the invention.
I do not restrict myself in any unessential respects but what I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
1. In a sewing machine, the combination with a vertically reciprocating bar, of a rigid shear element, a pivoted shear element for cooperating with said rigid shear element to cut material passing under said bar, a bracket supported and operated by said bar, a device pro ecting from said pivoted shear element and engaging said bracket for operating said pivoted shear element by said bracket, and means for supporting said device in different positions on said pivoted shear element ec centrically of the axis of the pivot on which said pivoted shear element is mounted.
In a sewing machine, a vertically reclprocating bar, a cutting disc, an axial member on which said cutting disc is supported for turning movements, a bracket supported and operated by said bar, a device for engaging said bracket to o erate said disc by said bracket, and means or supporting said glevice in different eccentric positions on said 3. 4. In a sewing machine, a vertically reciprocating bar, a bracket, a releasable clamp device rigidly securing said bracket on said bar, a rigid bracket, a cutting disc, a removable axial element supported by said rigid bracket and pivotally supporting said cutting disc, a projection from said cutting disc eccentrically of said axle member and engaging said bracket, and means for supporting said pro 'ection in different eccentric positions on sald cutting disc for the purpose described.
5. In a sewing machine the combination with a table, a rigid shear element having its upper side approximately in line with the upper side of the table, material feeding mechanism for feeding the material in approximately fiat position across said table and said shear element, and a vertically reciprocating bar, of a rigid bracket, a cutting instrument pivotally supported by said bracket and having its lower portion extend ing below the upper side of said table and said rigid shear element and cooperating with said shear element to cut the material lying flat on said table and said cutting element and fed by said feeding mechanism, a stud projecting from said cutting instrument, and a bracket attached to said bar and having a slot receiving said stud.
6. In a sewing machine the combination with a table for supporting the material to be sewed, a rigid shear element approximately in line with the upper side of said table, material feeding mechanism for feeding the material to be sewed, and stitching mechanism comprising a vertically reciprocating bar, of a pivotally supported cutting instrument cooperating with said shear element to cut the material moving in substantially flat position across said table and said shear element, a stud projecting from said cutting instrument, and a bracket rigid on said bar and having a slot receiving said stud.
7. In a sewing machine the combination with material feeding mechanism, and stitching mechanism comprising a vertically reciprocating bar, of a rigid shear element located below the horizontal plane of said feeding mechanism and laterally from the plane of said bar, a pivotally supported shear element having its lower portion extending below the upper surface of said rigid element, a stud projecting from said pivoted shear element, and a bracket rigid on said bar and having a slot receiving said stud.
8. In a sewing machine the combination with a table, a rigid shear element approxi mately in the plane of said table, and a vertically reciprocating bar, of a rigid bracket, a shear element pivoted on said bracket and having a cutting edge adjacent to said rigid shear element, a stud projecting from said pivoted shear element eccentric to its axis, and means supported by said bar for engaging said stud to operate said pivoted element.
9. In a sewing machine the combination with a table, a rigid shear element supported approximately in the plane of said table, and a vertically reciprocating bar, of a pivoted shear element cooperating with said rigid shear element to cut material lying flat upon said table and said rigid shear element, a stud projecting from said pivot-ed shear element, and a device supported and operated by said bar and engaging said stud to operate said pivoted shear element automatically and as {in incident to vertical reciprocation of said 10. In a sewing machine the combination with a table, and stitching mechanism comprising a vertically reciprocating bar, of a rigid cuttin element approximately in the plane of sai table, a rigid support, a cutting member pivoted on said support for rocking movements and extending downwardly below the plane of said table and said rigid cutting element, an operating member for said cutting member rigid on said bar, one of said members having a slot therein, and a stud projecting from the other member into said slot for rocking said cutting member when said reciprocating bar operates.
11. In a sewing machine the combination with a table, a rigid cutting member approximately in the plane of said table, material feeding mechanism, and a vertical reciprocating bar element, of a rigid bracket, an element supported by said bracket for rocking movements and extending below the upper side of said rigid cutting member and said table, a cutting edge in connection with said rocking element, and a stud projecting from one of said elements and engaging the other for rocking said rocking element and causing said cutting edge to cooperate with said rigid cutting member.
