This invention relates to presses for baling hay, and a primary object of this invention is to provide a baling press equipped with an improved plunger, and further to provide a baling press of the above mentioned character which consists of but relatively few parts, thus rendering the baler less likely to become out of order, easily repaired, and otherwise more eliicient over the present type l0 of baler.
With the above and numerous other objects in view, the invention consists in the novel combination and arrangement of parts and details of structure hereinafter more fully described and claimed,v reference being had to the accompanying drawings, wherein:

The bull wheel of the press is designated generally by the reference character 9.V My
improved plunger comprises an elongated skeleton frame F that is substantially rectangular in cross section. The'frame F at its forward and rear ends are supported on suitable wheels or casters 10. The plunger F is adapted to travel longitudinally upon the bottom of the baling press into and out of the baling chamber designated by the reference character C. Y
Mounted in the forward end of the frame lF is a head member 11. The head member 11 at opposite sides thereof is suitably notched as at 12 forvacconnnodating dogs 13 arranged on the side walls of the chamber C when the plunger is moved inwardly of the chamber. A pitman 14 is pivoted atits forward end to the rear face of the head member 11 as at 16, and the rear end of the pitman 14 is pivo-tally connected to the bull wheel 9 vthrough the medium of an eccentric pin 16.
The bull wheel 9 is operated through the medium of suitable gearing suoli as is employed for such purposes, and obviously, during rotation of the bull wheel 9, reciprocatory movement will be imparted to the plunger for moving the same into and out of the chamber C.
A link 17 is pivotally connected at one end to a lug 18 formed on the pitman 14 adjacent the forward end of the pitman. The opposite end of the link 17 is pivotally connected to the rear end of the lever 6 as at 19 Vbetween the plunger and the presser foot.
Secured to the side members of the frame F at the forward end of the latter is a plate 2O that extends transversely of the plunger. To the inner edge of the plate 2O there is hinged as at 21 an apron or cover plate 22. A headed stud 23 projects upwardly from the link 17 and extends through a suitable opening 24 provided therefor in the apron adjacent the free end of the apron.
The purpose of the apron 22 is to prevent hay from falling into the frame F when the latter is moved inwardly of the chamber C. In this connection then it will be seen that the movement of the apron 22 about its hinge 21 will be cont-rolled by the operation of the link 17, with the result that as the plunger moves inwardly of the chamber C resulting in the raising of the presser foot 3 and in the positioning of the link 17 in the position shown in Figure 2, the apron 22 will rest flat upon the top of the frame F or in a closing position, at which time the plunger will be within the chamber C. As the plunger begins its withdrawal stroke, the apron 22 will be gradually raised upwardly or swung about its hinge 21 under action of the link 17 until the apron 2Q assumes that position suggested in Figure 1, at which time `the plunger will be at the end of its return stroke.
Even though I have herein shown and de- .iscribed the preferred embodiment of my in vention, it is to be iuiderstood that the same is susceptible to changes fully comprehended by the spirit of the invention as herein described, and the scope of the appended m claims.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new is:
1. A baling press including in combination, a presser foot, a pivotally mounted Ji.; lever therefor, a bull wheel, a plunger. a pitman pivotally connected at one end with the plunger and at its other end eccentrically connected with the bull wheel, a link pivotally connected to t-he pitman adjacent the 14) first mentioned end ot the pitman at one end of said link, the other end of said link being pivotally connected to said presser foot lever, an apron hingedly mounted adjacent one end thereof to the plunger, said apron at its free end adapted to engage the link, and said link intermediate its ends provided with a headed stud extending through an openi ing provided in the free end of-said apron whereby to provide a loose connection be- .30 tween said apron and said link.
A baling press including in combination, a lever actuated presser foot, a pitman actuated plunger, an apron pivotally mounted on the plunger', a link pivotally connect- 55 ing the presser foot lever with the pitman actuating the plunger', and a stud projecting from the link and extending through an aperture provided in the apron remote from the pivot of the apron.
