This invention relates to a cigarette rod former and paster for high speed cigarette machines. In such machines, the difficulties encountered in forming, at high speeds, a rod in which the tobacco is uniformly distributed and in pasting that rod as fast as formed, have caused various operating troubles and have limited the s eed at which the-machines could operate satisfactorily.
The lack of uniformity in the distribution of tobacco in the rod is believed to be due in considerable measure to momentary jamming or slowing up of the tobacco stream as the result of friction between the stream and the converging walls of the rod former producing an excess of tobacco therein, often followed by a deficiency which causes slipping of the wrapper strip and a resulting excess of paste on the Hap. One object of the invention is`=to overcome this and other troubles due to the same cause.
Taking up and spreading paste, in such machines, with the necessary rapidity, tends to cause paste to accumulate on the lower side of the paste wheel which overlies the rod, and fouls the same. An object of the invention is to avoid this fouling by an i'mproved arrangement of the paste wheel. Still another object is to avoid piling up of paste on the upper surface of the aste wheel and to avoid drying of the pasting surface of .the paste wheel and to increase its paste carrying capacity by an improved construction and arrangement of the paste carrying surfaces. Still another object is to provide a combined paste supply device and paste applying wheel in which paste will be positively supplied to the wheel in sufficient quantity, despite the opposing effect of centrifugal force whichV increases as the speed of the machine increases, and in which the quantity of paste thus supplied may be accurately controlled. It is also an object of the invention to provide means for keepling the paste supplying drum free from sticky accumulations of paste without interfering with paste circulation and, indeed.l

In carrying the invention into effect, there is provided cigarette rod forming means having a tube and coacting tongue for continuously folding a wrapper strip about a stream of tobacco to form a rod, together with pasting mechanism having a pasting wheel in operating contact with a flap of said wrapper strip beyond said tube, and tobacco impellingmeans operating within the tube and tongue to prevent slippageof the wrapper strip and rod. In the best constructions, the tongue has a longitudinal slot therein, and said impelling means includes a rotating disk extending through' said slot. In the best forms, the pasting mechanism having a grooved eriphery forming upper and lower fianges, of which the lower is of greater diameter than the upper, and means lfor supplying ,fr periphery. Referring now to the drawings, a table 10 forming part of the main frame of the cigarette machine, by means of a movable sleeve y11 and a stationary sleeve 12, supports a .vertical shaft 13 which is also supported by a u bearing' housing 14 attached to a stationary bracket 15. Between the table and the housing 14 is rotatably mounted, by' means of a bearing 16, a lower housing 17 which -fhas a tubular extension 18 supporting, by
9 means of a bearing 19, a shaft 20 for trans-A mitting power to -the paste wheel. Integral withthe tubular extension-13 is ahousing 21 in which vare inserted bearings 22 carrying an inclined shaft 23driven by a spiral u gear 24, on the upper endlof which shaft y is mounted a grooved pasting wheel 25.
The spiral ear 24 is in mesh with a gear 26 on the .shafgtl 2O which is driven by means of gears 27 and-28 from shaft 13, which in 30 turn is driven by gear 29 which, through an intermediate gear ,not shown is driven by a gear not shown on vthe main driveshaft of the machine. On the top of the, lower housing 17, by means of a screw 30, there is adjustably mounted a housing 31 which is integral with the gear cover 32. This gear cover is vided with thumb screws 33 holdingv the paste pot 34 which, thus, can be readily rei d moved. Within the housing 31, the shaft 13 has afworm 35 which meshes with a worm wheel 36 on a shaft 37 located in the sleeve rtion 38 of housing 31. A 'coupling mem- Kr 39 on the paste su ply drum shaft 40 engages with the mem er 41 on shaft 37 when the paste pot is in place. Within the pot 34, the shaft 40 carries the recessed paste drum 42 which is driven by the coupling 41 mounted on shaft 37.
The paste wheel 25 is made with af'beveled eriphery grooved as shown in Fig. 7 to orm upper and lower peripheral flanges of which the lower is of greater diameter and /beveled to conform to a vertical cross section 55 of the flap. This flange engages with the cylindrical surface and enters the recessed portion of the paste drum 42, the drum rotating'downward past this flange so that the groove is forcibly loaded with paste against aq the actionof centrifugal force as the disk sweeps across the paste carrying surface of the drum. Above the paste drum 42 is mounted an adjustable slide 44 which,by means of screw 45., regulates the flow of paste in the recess of the paste drum. A'slotted wiper plate 46, suspended by a shaft 47 from an arm 48 mounted upon a bracket 49 attached to paste pot 34, prevents the accumulation of paste on the circumference of diskl 25.
To agitate the paste and scrape accumulations thereof from the sides of the drum, the spur gear 43 mounted on shaft 40 is provided and meshes with a gear 50 on shaft 51 on which, within the paste pot, is mounted a two Winged paddle 52, one wing of which once in every revolution meets the circumference of drum 42, therebyv wiping the superfluous paste therefrom, or carrying paste to the disk if the supply in the ot is low, while the other wing, which is for ed for the purpose, wipes the sides ofthe drum (Fig. 4). The paddle 52 continually agitates the paste, thereby preventing it from settling and keeping it at a uniform density. The pot 34 is provided with a chamber 34a into which an electric heating cartridge may be inserted if it is desired to heat the paste.
Within the housing 14 is the drive for the impeller disk including a worm 53 mounted on a key slidable on shaft 13, which worm meshes with worm wheel 54 mounted on shaft 55. One end of shaft 55 carries a lixedly mounted collar 56 into a groove of which rojects a set screw 57 carried by the hub of) housing 58. The latter housing, which thereby can be swung around shaft 55 as indicated by dotted lines in Fig. 1. carries a stud 59 (Figs. 1 and 5) on which is mounted the impeller disk 60 and a spur gear 61 driven by gear 62 on shaft 55.
The impeller disk 60 projects into a slot cut in the folding tongue 63 of the rod former, into which the paper P and tobacco T are guided by the bridge element 64. This impeller disk, which is positively driven at a peripheral speed equal to the linear speed of It will be seen that the aste disk 25 enthe cigarette paper, rests on the tobacco T in the rod former and, by the friction caused by its pressure on the tobacco, propels the same in unison with the aper P, thereby overcoming the friction e ected by the rod former walls on the advancing tobacco, which causes the troubles already pointed out, A set screw 65 held by lug 66 of housing 14 bears against the under side of hub 67 of housin 58 and permits the impeller disk to be vertlcally adjusted for proper pressure on the tobacco.
The bracket 15 supports a slide 68 which can be raised or lowered by a hand wheel 69 on screw rod 70 held by bracket l5. To adjust the vertical position of the paste disk 25 relative to the flap of the paper P (Fig. 2) to be pasted, the slide 68 is provided with a bracket 71 bearing against an arm` 72 pro- .jecting horizontally from the lower housing 17, so that, by turning hand Wheel 69, and lifting the slide the] housings 17'and 31, shaft 13, and sleeve 11 c'an be raised. i
A hand wheel 73 on rod 7 4 (Fig. 1), which is carried by a lug 75 of the slide 68, clamps the arm 72 against bracket 71, the end of the rod 74 bearing against the upper portion of a wedge block 6 eccentrically pivoted on a stud 77 in slide 68, thereby pressing the square edge of block 76 down upon arm 72.
. By loosening hand Wheel 78, the wedge block is swung to released position by its own Weight, and the housing 17 is freed so that it, together with paste pot 34, paste drum, and pastin wheel 25, can besWung in-unison away 1ilrom the cigarette rod, as shown by dotted lines in Fig. 4.
A rod 78 screwed into the slide 68 projects through a slot in -bracket 15 and carries a hand wheel 79 which clamps the slide 68 against bracket 15. A plate 80 attached to bracket 15 serves as a guide for the slide 68. An adjusting screw 81 projecting from bracket 15, through the arm 72, makes possible accurate adjustment of the horizontal position of the pasting wheel 25 with respect to the open Hap of the cigarette Wrapper strip.
What is claimed is:
1. In a cigarette machine, the combination with rod forming means having a tube and coacting tongue for continuously folding a wrapper strip about a stream of tobacco to form a rod, of pasting mechanism having a pasting wheel in operative contact with a flap of said wrapper strip beyond said tube, and tobacco impelling means projecting throu h said tongue into said tube to engage the to acco to prevent slippage of 'the wrapper strip and rod.

In a cigarette machine, the combination with rod forming means having a tube and coacting tongue for continuously folding a 'wrapper strip about a stream of tobaccoto form a rod, of pasting mechanism having a pasting wheel in operative contact with a flap of said Wrapper strip beyond said tube, and tobacco impelling means' projecting throu h said tongue into said tube to engage the to aoco to preventslippage of lthe wrapper strip and rod, said impelling means comprising a revolving disk having peripheral contact with the-tobacco stream.
3. In a cigarette machine, the combination with means for continuously folding a wrapper strip about a stream of tobacco to form a rod, of means for applying paste to the flap of said wrapper strip, said means-im cluding a pasting wheel in peripheral contact with said Hap and rotating in a plane downwardly inclined towards the point of contact with its periphery overlying the rod.

In a cigarette machine, the combination with means for continuously folding a wrapper strip about a. stream of tobacco to form a rod, of means for applying paste to the flap of said wrapper strip, said means including a pasting wheel in peripheral contact with said flap and rotating in a plane said wheel having a grooved periphery with a projecting flange adjoining sai groove.
8. Pasting mechanism comprising a asting wheel having a grooved peri hery orming upper and lower flanges o which the lower is of greater diameter than the upper, and means for supplying paste to said periphery.`
