COMBINED DOOR HANGER AND HINGE Filed lay 13, 1929 llllllllllllllllllllll Patented Sept. 1, 1931 UNITED STATES "PATENT OFFICE WILLIAM D. FERRIS, OF STERLING, ILLINOIS, ASSIGNOR FRANTZ MANUFACTURING H 00., OF STERLING, ILLINOIS, A CORPORATION OF I'LLINOIS COMBINED DOOR HANGER HINGE Application filed May 13,
This invention relates to door hangers, and more particularly to those which have a vertically disposed suspending bolt forming the plintle of a hinge between two sections of the oor.
Generally stated, the object of the invention is to provide a novel and improved construction whereby the said suspending bolt and the hinge and door elements carried thereby are adjustable bodily on the hanger toward and away from the track upon which the hanger is supported to travel.
Another object is to provide a novel and improved construction whereby the said suspending bolt and the elements carried thereby are free to swing about a transverse pivot on the hanger body, whereby the said bolt and the drop strap of the hanger may have movement relatively to the body of the hanger about said pivot, if unevenness of the track or other conditions require, the body of the hanger being provided with a plurality of wheels that travel on said track.
It is also an object to provide certain' details and features of construction and combinations tending to increase the general efiiciency and the desirability of a combined door hanger and hinge of this particular character. v
To these and other useful ends, the invention consists in the matters hereinafter set V forth and claimed, and shown in the accompanying drawings, in which,
Fig. 1 is a side elevation of a door hanger and hinge embodying the principles of the invention, showing a portion of the track upon which the hanger travels, and showing portions of the two door sections that are connected together by the hinge.
F Fig. 2 is a vertical section on line 2-2 in Fig. 2 is a horizontal section on line 33 in Fig. 1.
As thus illustrated, the invention comprises a hanger body composed of flat bars 1 and 1, shaped as shown, and bent inwardly at their middle portions to bear against the upper end of the drop strap 2, which latter is connected at its upper end by a transverse pivot 3 with the said middle portions of said 1929. Serial No. 362,597.
bars. The opposite ends of the bars 1 and 1 are provided with wheels 4 which are adaptedtotravel upon the track 5, which latter may be supported in any suitable or desired manner over a doorway. Said drop strap is bent outwardly at 6 to clear the track 5, and its lower end is then bent outwardly tov form the horizontal portion 7, as shown. This horizontal portion has a slot 8 formed therein, said slot being at right anglesto said track.
The door sections 9-and 10 are hinged together by the hinge plates 11 which have pintle bearings 12, as shown, and which bearings have a pintle bolt or pin 13, as shown. The lower end portion of this bolt is threaded at 14, as shown, and nuts 15 are applied thereto to provide a shoulder upon which the lower pintle bearing 12 may rest and turn about a vertical axis. The upper portion of this pintle bolt is provided with a shoulder 16 which bears against the under side of the horizontal portion 7 previously mentioned, and the upper portion 17 of the bolt is threaded to receive the nut 18, as shown, which nut 18 and the shoulder 16 clamp the horizontal portion 7 between them, thereby rigidly and firmly mounting the bolt 13 on the drop strap of the hanger. In this way, the weight of the door sections is sustained by the bolt 13, and this weight is in turn sustained by the drop strap of the hanger, on the pivot 3, whereby the drop strap and bolt and supported parts are free to have motion relatively to the hanger body bars 1 and 1, about the horizontal transverse axis provided by the pivot 3, owing to unevenness of the track 5 or other conditions.
A guard 19 is secured to the lower portion of the drop strap 2 and bent around the under edge of track 5, as shown, thereby tending to prevent the hanger from jumping up and leaving the track.
The pintle bolt 16 can obviously be adjusted in the slot 8, toward and away from 95 the track 5, thereby to accurately position the door sections relatively to the doorway of the building. In addition, by means of the nuts 15, the door sections can be adjusted up and downon the pintle bolt 13,
in order to accurately position the door sections relatively to the doorway. In this way, adjustment of the door sections up and down does not necessitate any loosening of the pintle bolt on the drop strap portion 7, as the nut 18 does not need to be loosened, but only the nuts 15, when the door sections are adjusted up and down.
hat I claim as my invention is:
In a door hanger, the combination of a wheeled hanger body having a drop strap provided with an outturned lower end portion, a vertically disposed hinge bolt forming a pintle and screw means whereby said pintle is adjustable laterally and horizontally on said outturned lower end portion, toward and away from the plane of the hanger body, said screw means when tightened rendering the pintle rigid with the drop strap, hinge plates having pintle bearings supported on said bolt, said outturned lower end portion having a slot therein extending at right angles to said track, and said bolt having an integral shoulder bearing against the under side of said end portion and having an adjustable nut for exerting clamping pressure upon the upper side of said end portion, thereby to clamp said end portion between said shoulder and nut said nut when loosened permitting lateral adjustment of the bolt in said slot.
