The present invention relates to low slug attachments. j y
In order to prevent smudge in printing, the ends of the slugs at the ends ofthe 5 printing line should be reduced in height, in order that under. the pressure exerted in printing the blank portions of said slugs may not come in contact with the page being printed and smudge same. The present in- 10 vention relates to attachments for composing room saws and other machines whereby printing slugs may be reduced in height at their blankcportions at the ends of the printing line.
An object of the present invention is to provide means for holding a plurality of slugs whereby the blank portions at the ends of the printing linemay be expeditiously reduced in height. Q A further object I is toprovide anattachment for composing room saws] whereby slugs may .be quickly positioned and securely held for treatment by'a saw.
A further object is, to provide a'holding means for one ormore printing slugs which will cut down the time required for treating slugs. to reduce the height of same at their blank portions at the ends of the printing line. y K A further object is to provide a slug holding attachment for composing room saws which is adaptable for use with com posing room saws as now known and used. The numeral 1 indicates the table of a composing room saw, Mounted in cooperative relationship with said table is the rotary saw 2, which saw 2 is driven by the shaft 3 carried in the bearings 44. A belt 5, drives the pulley 5 to communicaterot'ary movement to the saw 2. The saw 2 will ordinarily be covered by a guard, but the usual guard is omitted from' Figure 1 for purposes of clarity. y
The table 1 is ordinarily provided with the elongated slot or groove 6. Said slot 6 is utilized to slidably receive the attachment embodying the principles of the present invention, which attachment is indicated as a whole by the numeral 7. The attachment Tincludes the body portion 8 having the side walls 9 and 10 adapted to engage the side walls of the slot 6 in the table 1, whereby said attachment may have a straight line movement. In order to facilitate the insertion of the attachment 7 within the: slot 6, said side walls 9 and 10 may be slightly tapered, converging downwardly. Mounted upon the body portion 8 is the bracket 11 having the substantially horizontally extending portion 12. Secured to the horizontally extending portion 12 of thebracket 11 is the stop plate 13. The bracket 11 and plate 13 provide a slot for receiving the printing slugs 14 14. Said printing slugs have the raised type 15, and inasmuch as printing slugs are of a standard 7 height it is contemplatedin the present invention to utilize: the raised type l5for properly positioning the slugs 11-1 1 within the attachment 7. The. plate 13 is provided bracket 11.; It will be clear that when a pluralityof slugs are insertedwithin the attachment 7 the lip 16 will form an abutment for the end letters of the slugs 1414,

Providing the slugs are inserted within the attachment while said attachment is being held in the hands of the operator, it will be a simple matter to allow said slugs to gravitate to a position wherein the end printing letters have abutting relationship with the lip 16 on the plate 13. The portion 12 of the bracket 11 has a screw-threaded aperture for the reception of the screw-threaded stud 17, whereby the slugs may be tightly gripped between one end of said screwthreaded stud 17 and the body portion 8 of the attachment 7. i r
The body portion 8 of the attachment 7 is provided with the rod 18, carrying near its extremity the abutment 19. The rod 18 is adjustably carried by the body portion 8,
and for this purpose the rod 18 may have a flattened portion 20 for engagement with the setscrew 21 mounted in the body portion 8. The setscrew 21 is adapted to seat against the flat portion 20 of the rod 18 to hold said rod securely in'said body portion 8 against both longitudinal and rotary movement. The key '22 may be used for loosening the set-screw when it is desired to change the position ofthe rod 18 relative to the bodyportion 8. The abutment portion 19 o f'the rod18 isadapted to engage against the end of the table 1 to limit movement of the attachment 7 inwardly of said table.
lVhen it is desired to use the attachment 7, said attachment may be lifted from the table 1, and after the setscrew 17 has been backed away from the body portion 8 a sufficient distance, a plurality of slugs l i- 14 may be inserted into the attachment.

The attachment may be held in a position such that the slugs will gravitate to po'sitions wherein the end letters of each printing line will abut against the lip 16 of the The end printing letters will therefore be in alignment, regardless of the length of the slugs. \Vhile the slugs are in the positions referred to, the setscrew 17 may be tightened to hold the slugs secure- The rod 18 will be positioned to cause the abutment portions 19 thereof to abut against the end of the table 1 to limit movement of the attachment 7 toward the rotary saw 2. The attachment will be so designed that the upper portions of the ends of the slugs 1%11 will be presented to the edge of said rotary saw 2, whereby said saw will reduce the height of the slugs. The portions of the slugs which will be removed by the rotary saw 2 are indicated in Figures 3 and 6 by the broken lines 23- 23. 7 As noted above, the abutment portion 19 of the rod 18 will limit inward movement of the attachment 7, whereby to remove possibility of engagement of attachment 7 with the rotary saw 2. By reason of the fact that the rod 18 is readily adjustable relative tothe attachment 7, compensation may readily be made for different diameters of the rotary saw 2, variations in diameter of said rotary saw 2 occurring due to wear and resharpening.
By reason or the present invention a construetion is provided by means of which the blank portions at the ends of the slugs may be conveniently reduced, so that smudging of the printed page will be prevented. Byturning the slugs end for end in the attachment, the blank portions at both ends may be quickly cut away. A plurality of slugs may be handled at the same time regardless of the fact that said slu'gsmay be of different lengths.
Though a preferred embodiment of the present invention has been described in detail, it will be clear that many modifications will occur to those skilled in the art. It is' intended to cover all such modifications that fall within the scope of the appendedclaims.
What is claimed is'"- 1. In a device of'the character described, the combination of a base member, a bracket member secured to one side of said base member and having a portion removed from and extending transversely of said base member, an article clamping means carried by said portion, a downwardly extending article guard secured to said portion and having a transversely disposed stop thereon, and stop means for predeterminingly limitingmovement of said device on an operating support. I
2. A slug holding device comprising, in combination, a horizontally disposed table,
a holder arranged for slidable movement across the table, and an adjustable stop for limiting the movement of the holder, said holder comprising a base, an overhangin arm associated with the base, means carrie by the arm for applying clamping pressure to the slugs, and means likewise carried by the arm for engaging the raised type at the ends of the printing lines of the slugs for bringing such endsinto alinement.
3. A machine of the class described, comprising, in combination, a vertical saw, a table associated with anddisposed at right angles to the saw,a slug holding device socured to a base slidable in the table, said device comprising an upwardly extending arm removed from the base to. permit the insertion of the slugs, clamping means in the arm, a downwardly extending gage bar secured to the arm and having an edge adapted to engage the raised type portion of the slugs, properly to position the latter with respect to the clamping means and the base, the said base being slidable in a hori= zontal' plane to present the slugs to the saw substantially symmetrical with the horizontal axial plane through the vertical ro= tating saw, and an adjustable stop carried by the base to limit the travel of the slug holding device and the base in the direction of the saw. v
