Description

Filed March 10, 1930 H I S A T T O R N EV Patented Aug. 11, 1931 HILAN OTTO BARKER, OF CHICAGO, IJII'JINOIS muss [mutation filed March 10, 1930. Serial No. 434,759.
' This invention relates to certain novel improvements in presses and has for its prlncipal object the provision of an improved construction of this character which will be 5 highly efficient in use and economical in manufacture.
Among the several objects of my invention is the provision of a device adapted to press together overlapped sheets of paper or the like intended'to be adhesively secured together.
Other objects will appear hereinafter. The invention consists in a novel combination and arrangement of parts to be hereinafter described and claimed.
The invention will be best understood by reference to the accompanying drawings, showing the preferred form of construction and in which:
Fig. 1 is a perspective View ofone of the preferred forms of construction of the invention; and
i Fig. 2 is an elevational view of another preferred form of construction.
25f. Referring more particularly to the draw ings, 10 indicates the base upon which the mechanism is mounted. Extending vertically from this base 10 is an upright supporting member 11, to which is secured in 80 i any approved manner a fixed clamping block 12. Pivotally mounted adjacent to the upper end of the supporting member 11 is a rocker arm 13, one end of which is operatively connected to the movable clamping block 14 by wilmeans of a connecting member 15, said connecting member being pivotally secured to the rocker arm at 16 and to the movable clamping block at 17.
At a spaced distance above the base 10 0.3Ta lever 18 including a notch 19 and a pedal portion 20 is pivotally mounted upon the supporting member 11. This lever 18 is operatively connected to one end of the aforementioned rocker arm 13 by means of are connecting beam 21, said connecting beam being pivotally secured to the rocker arm 13 as at 22, and to the lever 18 as at 23.
Between the base 10 and the lever 18 and at a point adjacent to the connecting beam 50""21, a spring 24 is secured in any approved manner. It will be readily seen that the tension of this spring 24 will urge the pedal portion 20 of the lever 18 upwardly, and will also act through connecting beam 21, rocker arm 13 and connecting member 15 to urge the movable clamping block 14 upwardly and away from fixed clamping block 12.
At a spaced distance below the fixed clamping block 12 an arm 25 is pivotally secured as at 26 to the supporting member 11. This arm 25 includes an end portion 27 which is adapted to engage the notch 19 on the lever 18, and thus secure the pedal portion 20 of the lever 18 in its lowermost position. It will be readily seen that this action will also force the movable clamping block 14c against the fixed clamping block 12 and 'firmly hold' the sheets of paper 28 therebetween. A spring 29 is secured in any approved manner between the arm 25 and the'supporting member 11, and adapted to urge the arm 25 into contact with the lever 18.
In Fig. 2 I have illustrated another .preferred form of construction for my invention which is similar in operation but'which includes a lower rocker arm 30 pivotally mounted between the fixed clamping block 12 and the lever 31 which in this form of construction includes a pedal portion This lower rocker arm 30 is operatively connected to the rocker arm 13 by a connecting beam 33, and is also operatively connected to the lever 31 by a spring 34 secured there between in any approved manner. A spring 35, secured in any approved manner between the rocker arm 13 and the supporting member 11, is adapted to urge the clamping blocks 12 and 14 out of engagement in a manner as hereinbefore described.
-At the end of'the lever 31 opposite the foot portion 32 an arm 36, including a notch portion 37, is pivotally mounted This notch portion 37 is adapted to engage a pin 38 and a spring 39 is supported in any approved manner between the arm 36 and the lever 31 in order to insure such engagement. A
As can be readily understood, this construction permits securing of lever 31 in such a position that spring 34 will be under tension and therefore clamping blocks 12 and 14 will be forced together by the action of said spring 34.
While I have illustrated and described the preferred form of construction for carrying my invention into effect, this is capable of variation and modification, without departing from the spirit of the invention. I, therefore, do not wish to be limited to the precise details of construction set forth, but desire to avail myself of such variations and modifications as come Within the scope of the appended claims.
Having thus described my invention what I claim as new and desireto protect by Letters Patent is:
1. In a device of the character stated, a fixed clamping block, a movable clamping block, a rocker arm, means for operatively connecting said movable clamping block and said rocker arm, a lever including a pedal portion thereon, means for operatively connecting said lever with said rocker arm, a spring adapted to operate on said lever and through said rocker arm in a manner to urge said clamping blocks out of engaged position, an arm including a catch portion thereon adapted to engage the lever and thus retain said clamping blocks in engaged position against the action of said spring,
a spring adapted to urge said arm into operative position, and means for supporting the aforementioned parts.
2. In a device of the character stated, a base, an upright supporting structure on said base, a stationary clamping block projecting from said upright, a movable clamping block, a rocker arm pivotally mounted on the upper end of said upright, a link pivotally connecting said rocker arm and said movable clamping block, and means connected to said rocker arm for forcing said movable clamping block, through said link, against the work disposed between said blocks.
3. In a device of the character stated, a base, an upright supporting structure on said base, a stationary clamping block projecting from said upright, a movable clamping block, a rocker arm pivotally mounted on the upper end of said upright, a link pivotally connecting said rocker arm and said movable clamping block, and means connected to said rocker arm for forcing said movable clamping block, through said link, against the work disposed between said blocks, said means including a beam pivotally connected at its upper end to said rocker arm, and including foot operated means connected to said beam at its lower end and to said upright.
4c. In a device of the character stated, a base, an upright supporting structure on said base, a stationary clamping block projecting from said upright, a movable clamping block, a rocker arm pivotally mounted on the upper end of said upright, a link pivotally connecting said rocker arm and said movable clamping block, means connected to said rocker arm for forcing said movable clamping block, through said link, against the work disposed between said blocks, said means including a beam pivotally connected at its uper end to said rocker arm, and including foot operated means connected to said beam at its lower end and to said upright, yieldable means for urging said movable clamping block away from said stationary clamping block,
and means for holding said stationary clamping block against the work disposed between said blocks and against said yieldable means.
In testimony whereof I aflix my signature.
HILAN OTTO BARKER.
