Description

H. KORTH CANOE PADDLE Aug. 4, 1931.
Filed March 14, 1951 r l f 5 f 441 `Patented Aug. 4, 1931 i UNITED STATES PATENT oEEicE HERMAN NORTH, oF EAGLE RIVER, WISCONSIN CANOE PADDLE Application` med March 14,1931. serial No. 522,693.
vide a combination paddle which may be used for either single or double paddling,
the device including means whereby a single handle may be attached to one of the double paddle members.
A further object of this invention is to provide in a paddleV construction means whereby the water will be prevented from running downwardly on the handle of the paddle when' one of the paddles is raised.
The above and various other objects and advantages of this invention will in part be described in and in partbe understood from vthe following detailed description of the present preferred embodiment, the same being illustrated in the accompanying drawings, wherein Figure 1 is a detail side elevation of a double paddle constructed according-to the preferred embodiment of this invention;
Figure 2 is a detail side elevation of a Vsingle paddle; 1
Figure 3 is an enlarged fragmentary sec tional view taken on theline B-of Figure 1; f
Figure 4 is van `enlarged side elevation of one of thel removable handle members;
Figure 5 isa similar view showing another of the handle members, and
Figure 6 is an enlarged fragmentary sectional view partly in detail taken on the line 6 6- of Figure 1.
Referring to the drawings wherein like'.
numerals ofreference designate corresponding parts throughout .the several views, the
numeral 10 designates generally a paddle constructionl including a paddle member 11 which is mounted on one endof a shaft 12,
In the paddling'of canoeswhere one in-L 'tol paddle the canoe from one side ofthe "canoe, and where the operatorv is disposed at the rear endV of the canoe, the front end -is frequently raised to a point where lthe wind is able to swingY the raisedend, making it difficult to maintain thecanoe in the desired direction; Y f
In the paddle herein disclosed, the paddle vmembery 11', which is mounted on one endg"1T of the shaft 12, is disposed at substantially right angles to the paddle 13 which is mounted on one end of a shaft 12, theseshafts 12 and 12 being round in cross section. The
inner end of the shaft 12 is provided with a reduced portion 14 upon vwhich is mounted a socket member l5. I
" The shaft 12 is also provided'with are duced inner end portion 14f and a plug member 16 is disposed about the reduced portion 14 and extends inwardly" of the inner rend of the shaft 12, this plug 16 having a tapering inner end yportion 17 which is adapted to be removablydisposed in the tapering socket-18 of the socket member 15.V yA baffle 'or shield 19 of' frustreconical construction is disposed about the shaft 12 at a point inwardlyl from the paddle 11, and a similar shield 19 is, disposed about the'shaft`12 so as to prevent A l,
the water from the paddle 11y from running 4downwardly on the shaftk 12 toward the in-V ner end thereof. n
From the construction herein disclosed, the vtwo paddle members 11 and 13 maybe disposed in desired angular relation to each other, but larefpreferably disposedat substantially rightanglest'o each other so that when one ,of the paddles is :projected into the'water, the otherl paddle which 'is raised, will be disposed in edgewise relation tothe wind so as not toimpede themovement of. the operator'thereof. p
Where itis desired to use onlya single paddle, a handle member generally designated as 2()` is adapted tofbe removably mounted on the shaft 12, this handle 20 comprising a shaft portion 2l, which'is of a diameter substantially equal to the diameter of Athe shaft 12, 'provided with .a hand grasping portion 22 at the innery end thereof. IO
The outer end of the shaft 21 has a sleeve 23 mounted thereabout and a tapering plug member 24: is preferably formed integrally with the sleeve 23 and is adapted to be removably mounted in the tapering socket 18 of the paddle 10.
A second handle 25 which is provided with ashaft 26 and a handle grasping portion 27 is adapted to be removably mounted on the shaft 12, this handle 25 having a sleeve 28 mounted the inner" end theret'rf,
and a tapering socket member 29 is formed Y integrally With the sleeve 28 and removably engages the tapering plug member 17 of the shaft 12.
In the use of this device, the double paddle disclosed in- Figure 1- inay b e used in vthe conventional manner, and when it is desired to use the single paddle, the tvvo portions 12 and 12 of the double paddle may be separated and the removable handle member 20 mounted on the shaft 12 and the removable handle member 25 mounted on the shaft l2. Preferably, the hand grasping portions 22 or 27 are disposed in substantial linement with the edges or flat surface of the paddles 11 or 13, but due to the fact thaty vno securing pin or stop member is used in connection with the connecting plug and socket for Athe paddle members, the handle members 20 and 25 may be mountedin any desired relation With respect to the flat surfaces of the paddles. c
It is, ofcourse, understood that various changes and modifications may be madel in the details of construction and design of the above specifically described embodiment of this invention Without departing from the spirit thereof, such changes and modifi cations being restricted only bythe scope ofthe following claim.
In a ddle structure ofthe `character deseribedit an elongated handle split intermediate the ends thereof, a sleeve member secured to one of said sections, a tapering socket member secured to and `integrally formed withV said sleeve, a second sleeve member secured to the other of said handle sections, a tapering plug member adapted for en agement in said socket whereby to releasa ly `secure 'said handle sections `to-A gether vand a cup-shaped member mounted on said handle intermediate the ends thereof and adapted to prevent passage of Water toward the inner end of the handle.
In testimony whereof I hereunto affix my signature.
y HERMAN KORTH.
