Heretofore,

Patented Aug. 4, 1931 UNITED STATES JOHN A. PILCHER, OF ROANOKE, VIRGINIA SUPPORT FOR LOCOMOTIVE AIR PUMPS, ETC.
Application filed November 19, 1928. Serial No. 320,415.
My invention relates to certain improvements in frame supports which are secured to the boilers of locomotives and which carry the air pumps or feed water heater pumps or any of the other heavy devices on the locomotive.
One object of my invention is to so fasten the support frame that it can be so secured on the boiler of a locomotive or other object that it can be adjusted and held in position after adjustment.
A further object of the invention is to provide one type of support frame which can be used on different forms or types of boilers. it has been the practice to design an air pump support for .each type of boiler.
In the accompanying drawings:
Fig. 1 is a sectional view of a portion of the locomotive boiler showing my improved support frame secured thereto; and
Fig. 2 is a face view of the support frame.
Fig. 3 shows another form of bracket 3.
l is a locomotive boiler having the ordinary lagging 2. Secured to the shell of the boiler is a bracket 3 having a base against the boiler and secured to the boiler by the rows of studs marked 4 and 7. The row of studs marked 4 secure not only the bracket to the boiler but also secure the frame 5 for 0 supporting the air pump.
attached to it at the bottom a broad brace 10,
which is secured to a foot 8 of the pump supportframe 5 with a row of bolts 9. The brace 10 is secured to the boiler with a row of studs 11. This brace 10, which is of considerable 4 width, rigidly holds the air pump support frame in position after it is once ad usted.
The studs or rivets attaching the bracket 3 to the boiler can be placed either above or below or both above and below the line where the frame 5 is attached to the bracket 3. It
is not even necessary to have the rivets or studs below the center line if the broad foot is extended well below the center and well below the point where the bracket 3 is at- This to allow the bracket 3 to have such a base as to make it into the form of a bell crank in its action and reducing the effect of the leverage a very narrow thimble would have on a stud carried through straight on the line of the connection between the frame 6 and the bracket 3 by the studs The cylinder of the air pump or the device can be attached to this support frame either before or after it is hung on the bracket.
lVith the above construction the brackets and air pump support frames can be kept in stock, and a bracket can be secured at any convenient position on the locomotive so as to locate the air pump properly in position. All that is necessary at the time is to cut the brace to the proper length.
By the use of this invention considerable time is saved in the erecting shop as all of the air pump support frames for the same pumps can be used on various types of boilers.
I claim:
The combination in a support for locomotive air pumps and the like of a bracket arranged to be secured to the shell of the locomotive boiler, a frame suspended from the bracket and arranged to carry an air pump or the like and a rigid brace securing the lower end of the frame to the body of the boiler.
JOHN A. PILCHER.
