I SEALING RING FOR CANS AND FAILS Filed Oct. 15, 930
Fm 4 7 8 wmmmz INVENTDR HTTDRNEY Patented July 14, 1931 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE mamas n. RoLLAsoN, or wnnnLme, wnsr vraem'myassrenoa 'ro' wmrn nme STEEL coaroanrron, or wnanune, wnsrvmemm, A conroaa'rron or DELA- WARE smme RING roa cans .an'n'rms Application filed October 15, 1930. Serial No. 488,931.
This-invention relates to a sealing ring for cans and pails, and it has for its primary object to provide a simple and improved form of ring whereby covers may be securely attached to the bodies of cans and pails.
A further object is to provide a head attaching device, or sealing ring, of that type embodying a skirt portion which is adapted to be turned into underlying seated relation t0 the rim-roll or bead, wherein the skirt ortion is preliminarily and initially deormed to provide lines defining angularly related areas along which lines may occur the buckling that results from inward drawing of said skirt to bead-engaging position.
In describing said invention in etail, reference is herein had to the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 is a view, partly in section and 2e partly in side elevation, showing my invention;
Figure 2 is a detail section of a pail body with a cover mounted thereon and showing the sealing ring applied thereto preliminary to sealing said cover in place; and- Figure 3 is a similar view showing the ring in sealing position.
Referring to said drawings, 1 designates a can or pail body having an outwardly turned terminal bead or rim roll 2 at its open end. Said rim roll constitutes a seat adapted to be oonformably engaged by the arcuately curved terminal flange. 3 of a removable closure or cover 4:.
The cover is secured in place by means of a one-piece sheet-metal sealing ring, herein generally designated by the reference numeral 5, which comprises a bod 6 having a skirt portion 7, the said body aving a cur vature in cross section substantially correspending with that of the cover flange 3 to be embraced thereby. Said skirt portion '4' normall occupies a vertical position, de-
pending 'rom, or being a continuation or A hem 8 composed of one or more folds of the metal is formed on the lower edge of the skirt 7 for the purpose of reinforcing or stifiening said edge.
to The skirt is designed to be turned inwardduced and, therefore extension of, the outer portion of said body.
ly-into closely tucked underlying seated re- .lation to the under side of the rim roll 2 for securing the cover in firmly seated relation to the can or pail body. so tucking the skirt in its seated osition, the diameter of the skirt is materially resuch an absorption oi the excess material as will cause the hem edge 8 to snugly hug the under side of the rim roll 2. For this purpose, said skirt, or the hem edge thereof, has rolled therein throughout its circumference a series or succession of hollow indenta tions 9, whereb is reduced a continuous line of outward ly directed angular projections 10, preferably of pyramidal form, wherein each of the base lines of each p amid is diagonall inclined and is forme by prolongations o the base lines of adjacent pyramids, as shown.
llhe defining lines of said projections, or pyramids, constitute definite lines along which, as the skirt is bein tucked under the rim roll, the metal of t e skirt readilyi vforce, it readily collapses to effect absorp-' tion of excess material thereof.
2. The combination with a container having a rim roll, and a cover having an annular flange for seating upon said roll, of a sheet metal sealing ring comprising .a body,
arcuate in cross section, for closely seating "upon said flange, and a skirt depending verticall from the outer edge ortion of said-b0 y, said skirt being de ormed by the provision therein of a succession of closeprovision is made for Manifestly, in
1y associated outwardly pressed projections having angularly related defining ines along which may occur material-absorbing collapse resulting from the application to said skirt 5 of inwardly directed contracting force.
3. The combination with a container having a rim roll, and a cover having an annular flange for seating upon said roll, of a sheet metal sealing mng comprisin a body shaped to seat upon said flange, an a skirt formed by prolongin downwardly the outer edge portion of said laody, said skirt having formed therein a succession of pyramidal projections providing. angularly related areas whose defining lines constitute prescribed lines of material-absorbing collapse resulting from the application to said skirt of contracting force. a
In testimony whereof, I afiix my signature.
CHARLES H. ROLLASON.
