This invention relates to barrettes, and more particularly to comb barrettes, that 1s, barrettes of the type not only providing clasping means for the hair but also including a comb-like portion. One object of the invention is to provide a barrette of the general character indicated which maybe inexpensively and rapidly manufactured from materials of the general type of\cellulos'e ester 1 plastic such as cellulose nitrate, or cellulose acetate, plastic. A further object is to provide a barrette comprising a body portion carrying comb teeth and a cooperating clamping member for clamping the hair against the body and between the comb teeth. To these ends, and also to improve generally upon devices of the character indicated, my invention consists of the various matters hereinafter described and claimed.

Without restricting the invention thereto, it is described with more particular reference to the embodiment thereof illustrated in the accompanying! drawings. In these drawings: Figure 1 is a side elevation of a bari '26 rette with the clamping member thereof released to permit introduction of the hair into the barrette; Figure 2 is a similar view with the clamping member in clamping POSltlOIl; Figure 3 is a bottom view looking in the dio rection of the arrow 3 in Figure 2; Figure 4 is a fragmentary enlarged edge view of the body with a portion broken away to show the manner in which the teeth may be aflixed to the body; Figure 5 is a sectional view on line 55 of Figure 4; Figure 6 is a fragmentary enlarged View of the free end of the clamping member, looking in the direction of the arrow 6 in Figure 1; and Figure 7 is an enlarged end view of the body member looking in the direction of the arrow 7 in Figure 1.

Referring now in detail to'the drawings, the illustrated barrette comprises, in general, a body member 1 and a clamping member 2 hinged to the body portion at one end 3 and adapted for fastened connection with the body portion at the other end 4. The body portion 1 carries a comb, or series of teeth, 5 {extending therealong, and the clamping 60 member 2 is provided with a corresponding 2. For fastening the tongue to the body porlongitudinal aperture, or slot, 6 for the reception of the teeth when the clamping member is in closed position. In use, the hair is laid over the body portion and between the teeth, and the clamping member is closed into close cooperation with the body member and hair; and it will be noted that, in practical effect, the hair is held tightly against the body at one side of the comb, is Woven over the bases of the teeth and between the teeth, and is held tightly between the body and the clamping member at the other side of the comb.

In detail, and as illustrated the body por.-. t1on 1 and the clamping member, or tongue, 2 are glven closely comparable curvatures, insuring a close cooperation between them. The tonguemay be hinged to the barrette in anyconvement manner, and thereis shown a h1nge comprising mated standards 7, 7 permanently connected with the body port1on, as by being integral therewith or cemented thereto, the standards carrying a p'lntle 8 received in the end 3 of the tongue tion, while any suitable means may be provided, I have found the illustrated construc tion desirable.

In this construction the end 9 of the body is upturned and bifurcated as illustrated at 10 1n Fig. 7, thus-forming the sockets 11, 11 for the reception of the end 4 of the tongue. The rounded sides of the tongue have a snapfit down between the rounded ends 10a, 10a of the end 9 as shown in Fig. 3, the resiliency of the material permitting this.

In order to bring the tongue, when in' closed position, in close cooperation with the body substantially throughout the entire length of the tongue, the tongue adjacent its hinged end is provided with a downset 12, as distinguished from merely giving the tongue a uniform curve from the hinge pin ff 'if. tle throughout the length of the tongue. The comb portion 5 carried by the body may be connected therewith in any desired manner, but for convenience of manufacture the comb is desirably produced as a separate item from the body and then connected with the same; and as illustrated the body is provided with 100 a groo ve 13 (Figs. 4 and 5) into which the comb is inserted, and permanently held by,

' say, a suitable cement or by heat-fusion of tongue; said tongue,

As indicated previously, the material of the barrette is desirably cellulose ester plastic of any suitable composition as (parts by weight) pyroxylin 2&6, camphor 7.5, urea .1, pigment (zinc oxide) 1., residual solvent (alcohol) .3. With material of this genera1 type the parts may be readily cut from sheet stock, and then given desired form and curvature, by heating either dry or wet, to, say, 190 F. for a short time to soften the same, and then shaped. Also, such material gives a desired slight resiliency to the entire barrette and, in particular, provides the desired resiliency at the fastening 9.

Having thus described my invention, I claim:

1. In a barrette, a body carrying comb teeth therealong, a tongue for cooperation with the body and provided with a slot for reception of the comb teeth, a hinge structure connecting the tongue with the body at one end, and a fastening means for the tongue and bod at the other end, said body being upturne at such end to present said fastening means.

2. In a barrette, a body member carrying comb teeth therealong, a tongue member for cooperation with the body and provided with -a slot for reception of the comb teeth, a hinge structure connecting the tongue member with the bod member at one end, and a fastening means or the tongue member and body at the otherend, such fastening means comprising an n turned end portion of said body to there y present a spaced-standard structure on the body for reception of the other member, the immediately cooperating parts presenting a shank-and-socket structure.

3. In a barrette, a body carrying comb teeth therealong, a tongue for cooperation with the body and provided with a slot for the reception of the comb teeth, and a hinge structure connecting the tongue with the body at one end, such structure comprising a member on the body for the recflon an hinging of the tongue and upstan g from the body thereby lacing such end at a substantial distance a ove the bod to V0 smtable clearance to the hinge en of the closely adjacent said end, being downset toward the body, out of the tongues general shape over all, thereby to overcomethe spacing efiect of said upstanding hinge member along the ma or portion of the length of the tongue to thereb thereception of the comb teeth, a hinge structure connecting the tongue with the body at one end, and a fastening means for the tongue member and body at the other end, such fastening means comprising an upturned end portion of said body to thereby present a spaced-standard structure on the body for the reception of the tongue, the immediately cooperating parts presenting a shank-and-socket structure, and such hin e structure comprising a member on the b0 y for the reception and hinging of the tongue and upstanding from the body, thereby placing such end at a substantial distance above the body to give suitable clearance to the hinged end of the tongue, said tongue, closely adjacent said end, being downset toward the body, out of the tongues general shape over all, thereby to overcome the spacing efiect of said upstanding hinge member along the major portion of the length of the tongue to thereby bring the tongue into intimately close holding relation to said body, despite the said hinging clearance.
