' DUMP CAR DOORLOCK Filed March.l2, 1930 2 Sheets-Shee t 2 g f a if gwuento'o M W M Patented June 30, 1931 PATENT OFFICE- ANDREW GERMEK, OF EDWARDSVILLE, PENNSYLVANIA DUMP CAR DOORLOCK Application filed March 12, 1930. Serial No. 435,252.
This invention relates to door locks and u more particularly to a lock adapted to be used on the bottom doors of hopper or gondola cars.
The object of this invention is therefore to provide a door lock or latch which is especially adapted for use upon drop bottom cars and similar bulk carrying vehicles.
Another object of this invention is the provision of a bolt or latch guide adapted to be secured to the side of a car and having pivotally mounted thereon a cam locking and retaining means for said bolt or latch.
Other objects of this invention will become I apparent as the description thereof proceeds,
reference being now had to the accompanying drawings wherein Figure 1 is an elevational view of the door lock in position.
on line 2'2, Figure 1. V
Figure 3 is another detail section of the keeper bar taken on line 3-3, Fi re 1.
Figure 4 is a plan view of the door lock :3 taken on line 4-4, Figure 1.
Referring to the drawings 10 indicates a portion of the side of a drop bottom car having doors 11 (only one of which is shown) said doors being attached to the car in the manner wellknown in the art.
The locking means comprising the present invention consists of a keeper bar 12 and a lock 13. The keeper bar 12 is attached or otherwise secured to the bottom edge of the door 11, and at such an angle thereto that when the door is in its locked position (shown in Figure 1) the keeper bar 12 will be sub stantially horizontal. Formed integral with the keeper bar 12 are depending flanges 14,
14 and 15, and adjacent one end 15 is a slot 16, extending the full width of the keeper bar 12 from flange 14 to 14. As will be noted the top surface of the keeper 12 is adapted to abut the horizontal bottom of the car or the bottom edges of the side walls 10. Formed in the flange 15 and flange 14 are openings 17 and 18, said openings being adjacent the same corner of the keeper bar, the purpose of which is to be hereinafter de- 0 scribed.
Figure 2 is a detail section thereof, taken The lock 13 comprises essentially a bracket 19, having integrally formed therewith' at one end'thereof avertical guide portion 20, provided with a vertical slot*21 on the outer wall 20 of said guide portion for a purpose to be hereinafter described. Extending across the outer wall 20 of the guide portion 20 and integrally formed therewith is a bracket or bar support22, said bar support 22 being positioned adjacent the bottom of the slot 21. Integrally formed with the bracket 19 and in directalignment with the guide portion 20 is a vertical extension 23. Holes 24 are provided in the bracket 19 so that the same may be rigidly secured to the walllO of the car by means of rivets 25, in the manner sho-wn'in Figure 1, it being noted that the guide portion 20 is directly above the slot 16 in the keeper bar 12 on the door 11.
Slidably mounted in the guide portion 20 of the lock 13 is a tongue or bolt member 26, provided at its top with an enlarged head 27=having inclined faces 28 adapted to seat on similar faces 29 provided on the upper edges of the side walls of the guide portion 20. The top'surface 27 of the, head 27 on ure 1.
Pivotally mounted on the extension 23by means of the pivot 30 is a cam lock 31 the bottom edge 32 of which is provided with a convex curve of varying curvature adapted to slidably engage the concave top portion 27 of the tongue 26. Secured to one end of the cam lock 31 is a weight 33, which tends to urge the cam lock 31 in a counter-clockwise direction so as to wedge the cam edge 32 onto the top 27 of the tongue 26 to maintain the same in locked position. When the tongue 26 is so locked, it extends into the slot 16 of the keeper bar 12, the straight edge 26 of the tongue 26 engaging the flange 14 of the keeper bar 12, thereby locking the door 11, as apparent in Figure 1. The other end of the cam 31, is'provided with a locking finger 34 which is adapted toengage the (left) inclined face 28 of the tongue 26 when in its uppermost position to prevent the same from moving downward, as shown by the dotted lines. When the tongue 26 is in its raised position (as shown) it is disengaged from the keeper bar 12 thereby allowing the door 11 to swing open, in the well known manner.
The tongue 26 is provided with an opening 35 in which one end of a bar may be inserted to raise said tongue when desired, said bar being fulcrumed on the bar support member 22. Openings 17 and 18 are provided in the keeper bar 12 for a similar purpose.
lVhile a preferred embodiment of dump car lock has been shown it is to be understood that the same is susceptible of numerous modifications within the scope of the appended claims.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is 1. A car door securing device comprising a lock housing rigidly secured to the side wall of acar, a tongue slidably mounted therein, a keeper bar carried by and extending beyond the edge of said door and adapted to be engaged by said tongue, and-means carried by said lock housing and adapted to lock said tongue in either its raised or depressed position, said lock housing comprising an integral vertical guide portion adapted to snugly and slidably receive therein said tongue, a vertical slot in said guide portion, a trans verse pry bar support integral with said guide portion and extending across the bottom portion of said slot, an opening in said tongue registering with said slot, an enlarged head on said tongue having inwardly tapering faces, and similarly tapered faces on said guide portion on which said head is adapted to seat, the top edge of said tongue and guide portion being provided with a similar concave curvature.
2. A car door securing device comprising a lock housing rigidly secured to the side wall of a car, a tongue slidably mounted therein, a keeper bar carried by and extending beyond the edge of said door and adapted to be engaged by said tongue, and means carried by said lock housing and adapted to lock said tongue in either its raised or depressed po sition, said keeper bar being positioned at an angle relative to said door whereby the same will be substantially horizontal when said door is in its closed position, a transverse slot in said keeper bar adapted to receive therein the lower end of said tongue, and depending flanges formed integral with said keeper bar.
3. A car door securing device comprising a lock housing rigidly secured to the side wall of a car, a tongue slidably mounted therein, a keeper bar carried by and extending beyond the edge of said door and adapted to be engaged by said tongue, and means carried by said lock housing and adapted to lock said
