for carrying boxes for housing electrical equipment in a building, said bracket including a pair of slidably mounted bars having co-operating flanges to provide for the sliding movement and so constructed that the boxes may be readily secured to the bracket.
This invention will be best understood from a consideration of the following detailed description, in view of the accompanying drawings forming a part of the specification; nevertheless it is to be understood that the invention is not confined to the disclosure, being susceptible of such changes and modifications which shall define no material departure from the salient features of the invention as expressed in the appended claim.

Referring more particularly to the drawings, 10 designates a pair of scantling or joists of a building to which my adjustable brackets are adapted to be secured by means of screws or nails 11. The brackets shown in Figs. 1 to 3, inclusive, consist of a pair of bars 12 and 13 slidably mounted on each other with the bar 13 having perforated flanges 14 and 15 adapted to be secured to a face of the scantling or joist 10 by the se curing means 11. The bar 12 is likewise provided with a pair of flanges 16 and 17 adapted to be similarly secured to a joist or scantling.
The bar 13 consists of a strip of metal bent l6 intermediate its ends to form a depending flange 20 while the bent side walls of the strap are again turned at a right angle, as shown at 21, with the side flanges 22 and 23 disposed in'flat contact with each otherand normally located in a horizontal planewhile the depending flange 20 is located in substantially a vertical plane.
The bar 12 is U-shaped in formation having a bight portion 25 and two parallel side walls 26 and 27 embracing the members 22 and 23 of the bar 13. The side wall 27 terminates at the outer face of the depending flange 20 of the bar 13 while the free end 28 of the side wall 26 of the bar 12 is bent downwardly and embraces the other face of the depending flange 20. By this construction it will be seen that the bar 13 is fitted within the bar '12 and the bars are slidable relative to each other. A block 30 is provided with a longitudinal slot 31 to receive the bar 12 with the free end of the flange 32 at the bottom of the slot 31 being in engagement with the depending flange 20 of the bar 13. The outer face 30 of the block is provided with threaded passages 33 to receive threaded bolts 34 which pass through erforations 35 in the rear wall 36 of a box 3 securing the block to the box and for retaining the block on the bar 12. 35 By such a construction it is only necessary to secure the flanges 14 and 15 and the flanges 16 and 17, respectively, to contiguous joists or scantling. The block 30 will then be placed on the bar 12 after which the box 37 is secured by means of the bolts 34 to the block. When the bolts are screwed up tight the box 37 and likewise the block 30 will be clamped in position. The modified form shown in Fig. 4 is similar in many respects to the construction disclosed in Figs. 1 to 3, inclusive. This bracket is formed of a pair of bars, generally designated by the numerals 40 and 41. The bar 40 has a vertically disposed flange 42 and a 1 horizontally disposed flange 43. A perforated lip 44 projects laterally from the flange 42 while a perforated lip 45 depends from the flange 43.
The bar 41 has an outer wall 50 and a downturned flange 51 to receive the upper edge of the flange 42 of the bar 40. The bar 41 likewise has a horizontally disposed flange 52 engaging the flange 43 of the bar 40 and a U-shaped portion 53 turned over the. flange 43 of the bar 40. It will be noted from this construction that the bar 40 is slidably received within the flanged portions of the bar 41 permitting the bars to be moved outwardly from each other in order to extend the bracket. The side wall 50 of the bar 41 has a perforated flange 55 which in connection with the perforated lip 56 provides means for securing the bar 41 to a scantling or joist.
The bar 41 is provided with a longitudinal l slot 57 adapted to be aligned with a longitudinal slot 58 of the flange 42 of the bar 40 in order to receive a bolt or securing means for connecting a box to the sliding bars.

A supporting device for boxes carrying electrical equipment comprising a U-shaped bar, one leg of the bar having, a depending flange, a second bar formed of a strip of metal folded upon itself and having depending flanges in contact with the first-mentioned dependingflange, a U-shaped block receiving the pair of bars, one leg of the U-shaped block being shorter than the other leg with the depending flanges of the bars in; contact with the end of the shorter leg, a box secured to the block in abutting relation to said other leg of the block and the depending flanges of the bars. 7 l
