The embodiment'of my invention herein shown comprises a main frame 21 mounted upon a pedestal 22, substantially annularin shape, comprising sides 23 and 2d, and supporting among other parts a fixed impression platen 25 and a movable bed platen 26.
The impression platen 25 is adjustably supported upon the upper faces of the sides 2% and 2.4 of the frame 21 by means of four sleeves 27 each screW-threadedly engaged within one of the coo'pcrat-ingly screwthreaded apertures 28 formed at the four corners ofthe impression platcu25, and
each rotatable in that aperture to vary the elevation of that corner of the impression platen 25 above the frame engaging lower face of that sleeve 27, and therefore the elevation of that corner of the impression platen 25 above the frame 21; and thcimpression platen 15 is held in adjusted position by means of bolts 29 passing thrrmgh bores 30 in the sleeves 27, engaging in co 'operatingly screw threaded apertures 31 in the upper faces of the sides 23 and 24, and serving to hold the sleeves 27 and impression platen 25 firmly clamped to the frame 21, and also to hold the sleeves 27 against rotation,- and therefore the impres- Y sion platen 25 againstvariation in elevation or angle.
The bed platen 26 is supported by means of a pair of rearwardly extending arms 32 pivotally mounted upon a crpss shaftv 33 carried in arms 34 integral with the sides 23 and 24- of the frame 21 and projecting rearwardly from the upper portion thereof; and is actuated by means of a cross shaft 1752 supported in the sides 144: of the bed platen 26 and forming the pivot for two eccentric straps 180 actuated by eccentrics 181 carried by the main press-operating shaft 68.
Mounted at the right hand side of the press is web delivering means herein shown as a pair of brackets 35 carried by the pedestal 22 and provided with bearings 36 adapted to support a shaft 37 carrying a roll 38, brackets 39 carried at .the lower edge of the frame 21 and rotatably supporting theweb guiding roller 40, and brackets 41 can,
ried at the upper end of the side 21 provided with trunnions =12 and marrying respectively a first roil ist over which the web passes and a second roll 15 having its lower face slightly above the plane in which the web passes through the press, and under which the web passes just before it enters the press. In order to guide the web laterally the roll 44 is provided with sides 46 and 47, in order to provide for web of somewhat different width the side 47 is formed separate from the roll 44 and secured thereto in the desired adjusted position by means of a suitable set screw 48, in order to aline the web with the printing mechanism the entire roll n44 may be adjusted along its own axis by corresponding advance and retracting of its two trunnions 42, in order to facilitate guiding of the web the sides 46 and 47 are provided with bevelled inner faces and the roll 38 is permitted to over-run so that upon the termination of each advance of the web the web will bulge outwardly above the roller 44 to be drawn back by the next advance of the web accurately alined by engagement with the sides 46 and 47. The roller 44, because of its position, also serves to impose upon the web a reverse bend effective to remove substantially the entire coil from the Web, and to deliver the web to the press substantiall y flat.
Disposed at the left hand side of the press is an auxiliary frame 49 carrying the web feeding and web severing mechanism.
The web feeding mechanism herein shown includes: web lower face engaging means comprising two shafts 50 spaced from each other in the direction of extent of the web, suitably supported in the side plates 52 of the auxiliary frame 49, each carrying between the side plates 52 a pair of discs 53 rotatable with that shaft 50 and positioned to engage the opposite edges of the web, and each carrying exteriorly of the rear side plate 52 a gear 54; actuating means for the Web lower face engaging means comprising a gear 55 mounted on a stud 56 between the two gears 54 meshing with both the gears 54 and carrying a ratchet wheel 57 secured thereto by means of suitable pins 58 and engaged by a dog 59 pivoted at 60 to a segment 61 rotatable on the stud 56 and engaged by a rack 62 slidably mounted in the auxiliary frame 49 and pivoted at its lower end to a lever 63 pivoted to the main frame 21 at 64 and actuated by an eccentric strap 65 pivoted to the lever 63 at 66 and operated by means of an eccentric 67 mounted on the main pressoperating shaft 68; web upper face engaging means comprising a pair of shafts 70 each rotatably mounted 1n slots 71 formed in the upper edge of the side plates 52, each carrying loosely a pair of discs 72 opposing the corresponding discs53 and'cooperating therewith to ,grip the web therebetween, and biased upwardly, to remove the discs 72 from the web, by springs 73 disposed in recesses 69 formed in the side plates 52 and acting upwardly against the ends of the shafts 70; anthweb gripping means consisting of a bar 745-provided at its ends with pressed and the web gripped, by a cam 81.
rotatably mounted upon the shaft 82 and rotatable by means of a handle 83 to retract the upper abutment 79 of the spring 78 and thus remove the action of the spring 78 theretofore forcing the upper discs 72 against the lower discs 53 to thus permit the weaker springs 73 to raise the upper discs 72 clear of the web, all, however, without in any way interfering with the adjustment of the tension by which the web is to be engaged, regulated by the adjustment be tween the stud 77 and the bar 74.
The web severing means herein shown comprises a fixed knife 84 secured to the ends of the side plates 52-, and a movable knife 85 pivotally mounted upon a stud 86 carried by a lug 87 projecting from the rear side plate 52. The movable knife 85 is biased against the fixed knife 84 by means of a spring 202 compressed beneath the head of the stud 86, is provided with a bell-crank arm 88, and is normally held retracted by the action on the bell-crank arm 88 of a link 89 pivoted to the bell-crank arm 88 at 90, restrained at the other end by a fork 9]. embracing the main press-operating shaft 68, and controlled, through a roller 92 carried adjacent the fork 91, by a cam 93 mounted on the main press-operating shaft 68 and provided with a rim 51 engaging the roller 92, elevated over its entire periphery except for a single depression 94, and therefore effective to hold the roller 92 elevated, and the movable knife 85 retracted, except when the depression 94 registers with the roller 92, and at that time the movable knife 85 is swiftly and sharply advanced by means of a tension spring 95 connected between an aperture 96 in the end of the bell-crank arm 88 and a stud 97 projecting outwardly from the side 23 of the main frame 21.
The two side plates 52 are secured together by the fixed knife 84, and by such additional cross members as may be required, not shown, and the entire auxiliary frame 49 is supported from the main frame 21 by means of a pair of square bars 98 projecting outwardly from the side 23 of the main frame side 21 and engaging slidably within apertures 99 formed at the lower edge ofthe auxiliary frame side plates 52 to permit adjustment of the auxiliary frame 49 relative to the main frame 21 in the direction" of the length of the web, to thus permit positioning of the auxiliary frame 49 at that point where the severing mechanism ,isters with the printing mechanism ac- '-.,.-ately and correctly; and the auxiliary frame 19 may be locked in this adjusted position by means of set screws 100 passing through the slides 99 into engagement with the bars 98/ Mounted on the bed platen 26 are a plurality of chases 101, and mounted on the upper platen 25 are a plurality of cooperatn g impression plates 102.
Each of the impression plates 102 is reg istfered laterally by means of a keyway 103 cooperating with a key 104 relatively perinanently positioned within a keyway 105 formed in the face plate 190 of the fixed platen 25, and each of the impression plates 102 is registered longitudinally of the key 104, and held assembled on the fixed platen 25, by means of a pin 106 having a reduced tip 107 projecting through an aperture 108 in the face plate 190 of the fixed platen 25, held normally retracted by means of a spring 109 compressed between the upper face of the face plate 190 of the fixed platen 25 and the shoulder 199 formed by the reduced extension 107, but projectable by means of a handle 110 into position with the screw threaded end portion 191 of its reduced extension 107 engaging within a correspondingly screw threaded aperture 111 in the impression plate 102, the projection of the extension 107 being facilitated, particularly when the plate 102 is not exactly alined, by a bevelled tip 192 carried by the extension 107 beyond the end-portion 191.
Each of the chases 101 comprises a solid base l12pr0vided with integral fixed sides 113 and 114, a rear end 115 normally retained in assembled position by means of screws 116 passing into the ends of the sides113and 114, and a front end 117 secured against direct movement away from the sides 113 and 1,14 bymeans. of similar screws 118, and 119, but provided with a slot 120 below the aperture for thescrew 119 to permit pivotal movement of the front end 117 about the screw 118 into position permitting any part or all of the form being slipped from the chase through the open front end thereof. The side 114 is pr0vided with the usual screw sleeves 120 adapted to act against a plate 121 to clamp the form laterally, the front end 117 is provided with similar screw sleeves 122 adapted to act against a plate 123 to clamp the form longitudinally, and the front end 117 may be held in closed position by the action of the screw sleeves 122 in effect clamping the front end 117 between the plate 123 and the heads of v the screws 118 and 119, or, if desired, the
Each chase bottom plate 112 is registered with the face plate 200 of the bed platen 26 in a manner similar to that by which each impression plate 102 is registered with the face plate 190 of the impression platen 25, and accordingly each chase bottom plate 112 is provided with a keyway 124 adapted to receive a key 125 normally held within a keyway 126 formed in the face plate 200 of the bed platen 26, and with a screw-threaded recess 127 adapted to receive the screwthreaded end 193 of a pin 128 passing through an aperture 129:-i n the face plate 200 of the bed platen 26, normallyheld retracted by its own weight, held against complete disassociation from the face plate 200 by means of a fork 130 secured to the under side of the face plate 200 by draft screws 1 1, projectable into chase holding position by means of a suitable finger piece 132, and provided with a bevelled tip 191 facilitating insertion. I
It will be appreciated by those skilled in the art that by means of this construction any impression member, either an impression plate or a chase, may be removed and replaced without disturbing the register thereof with the web or with the other impression members or with the severing mechanism, and also that because of this construction two impression-plates, or two chases, may be interchanged, as, for example, to reverse the colors in which certain portions of the matter are printed without the necessity for changing or cleaning the inking mechanism; and from the above description it will be apparent to those skilled in the art that each chase and each impression plate is registered accurately and in such manner that it can be removed and replaced, or interchanged with another chase or plate, with out in any manner disturbing this register. This is particularly important/in the ress shown herein, since in this press the registering means for the chases, and of course also the registering means for the impression plates,- are separated by spacing exactly twice the distance subtended by the active face of a. chase, the severing mechanism is separated from the last chase by a spacing exactly equal to an even multiple of this distance, and the feeding mechanism advances the web at each operation exactly this distance, whereby the chases are all accurately registered with the web as the web advances from one chase to the next, and the severing mechanism is also accurately registered with theweb as the web advances from the last chase.
Ink is supplied to the chases by means of three inking rollers 133 provided at their ends with spindles 131 carrying bushings 135 received within recesses 136 in the side plates 137 of a roller frame 138 comprising also tie-rods 139 and mounted for reciprocation on the bed platen 26 by means of lips n'ojecting from the lower ends of the side plates 137 to define longitudinal recesses 111 which receive rails 1 12 projecting from tracks 143 carried by the upper face of the edges 111 of the'bed platen 26. The roller frame 1238 is reciprocated from the retracted position herein shown forwardly over inking discs 11-5 and the chases 101 by means of links 116 pivoted at one end to the roller frame 1% and at the other end to the free ends of arms 117 secured to a crossshatt 1'16 mounted in the sides 22% and 21 of the main frame 21 and itself actuated through one of the arms 1-17 by an w-centrie strap 11$ pivoted to this arm 117 at. and actuated by an eccentric 151 mounted upon the main press-operating shaft 63. The rollers 11123 are supported in this movement directly by t vpr high lll'tll'tl'H 1.72 carried by the bed platen 26. and also bv dist-s 153 of equal diameter with the l'tllltlri 132") tixed on the spindles .1 14 of the rollers 132; and riding on the t vpe-high upper face 201 of the track t ll and the rollers 111 are pres ed lownwardly into engag ment with the bearers 152. and to engage the di.-:cs 1.3;} with the upper laces 201 of the tracks 113, by means of a plurality ol springs 1.775 mounted on a pair of plates 156 disposed one at aeh side of the roller frame 136 and held in position by screws 157 extending through bayonet v lots 13b to permit removal of the plates 156, and consequen relezuee of the rollers 133 from the action of the springs 155, and subsequent removal of the rollers 133 all by movement of the plates 156 lon itudinally of the roller frame side plates 137 normally prevented by the presence within apertures in the plates 156 of pins 160 carried by springs 161 supported in the roller frame side plates 137 and deformable to retract the pins 160 from the apertures 159 to permit such longitudinal movement, and such removal of the plate 156 and springs 155.
The bearers 152 are supported on the face plate 200 of the bed platen 26 by means of studs 162 reciprocable in apertures 163 in bearer bases 203 secured to the face plate 200 are resiliently held at type level by means of springs 16!- 'irojecting from recesses 105 in the bases 203 and compressed between the lower surface of the bearers 152 and the bearer bases 203, and during printing. and. to prevent: contact thereof with the well are depre sed by means of plates 165 secured to the impression platen 25 and projecting beneath the type level to contract, the bearers 152 before the bearers reach type level. and to hold the bearers 152 below type level; while contact of the web with the upper faces 201 of the tracks 143 is pre' vented by means of plates 166 and 167 secured to tho-inner faces of the tracks 1413 projecting just above the level of the upper faces 201 of the tracks 143 to raise the web slightly above the upper faces 201 when the upper faces 201 would otherwise contact the web during printing, the plate 167 being formed with a web engaging surface designed to prevent smearing of the ink on the web and herein shownas consisting of a multiplicity of fine pin points 196.
The press herein shown also comprises means for holding the web tightly against: the impression plates 102 during printing, and for maintaining the web so held until after the bed platen has receded, to thus strip the web from the forms, this means being provided herein between the active sur' faces of the impression plates 102 and comprising between each pair of active surfaces a holding means consisting of a bar 168 having its ends extended to form sides 169 we tending to pins 170 'n'ojecting from the corre--ponding bearer depressing plates 165, having these ends then coiled above these pins 170 to form helical springs 197, and having these ends then projecting further as eXten ions 171 disposed well below the sides 16$) and in position to be engaged by the corresponding bearer 152 to force the bar 168 upwardly into position clamping the web against the impression plates 102 at a time at least not later then the time when the bearer 152 contacts the plates 165, and to hold the bars 168 firmly in this web-clamp ing position during printing, and for a sufficient time thereafter to insure that the forms strip from the web. In the press herein shown the web is actually firmly clamped even before the bearers 152 have engaged the bearer depressing plates 165, and remains clamped until well after the bearers 152 have separated from the bearer depressing plates 165, this function resulting from the fact that the extensions 171 are disposed so far beneath the sides 169 that the rods 168 force the web against the .impression plates 102 Well before the bearers 152 reach the bearer depressing plates 165,
after which the further movement of the bearers 152 is permitted by resilient deformation of the helical spring sections 197 about the supporting pins 170.
The printing press herein shown also includes means for rotating the inking discs 145 this means comprising a cross bar 172 mounted in the sides 1 14 of the bed platen 26, operated by means of an arm 173 carrying a pin 17% engaged by the roller frame 138 as the roller frame 138 advances and carrying a plurality of arms 175 carrying on their free ends dogs 176 held by gravity with their pawls 177 in engagement with ratchet teeth 178 formed on the lower faces of the by means of a belt 184 passing over pulle s 185 and 186 mounted respectively on t e shaft 187 of the motor 182 and on a cross shaft 183 connected to the main press-opcrating shaft 68 by means of a worm 188 carried on the cross shaft 183 and engaging a worm gear 189 mounted on the main pressoperating shaft 68; and the various mechanisms operated by the main presssoper'ating shaft are of course properly synchronized, in the embodiment of my invention herein shown the severing mechanism operates practically synchronously with the;
printing, the inking rollers 133 advance as the bed platen 26 recedes and recede as the bed platen 26 advances, and the web feeding mechanism actuating rack 62 rises through its idle stroke while the bed platen 26 is completing its approach to the impression platen 25 and beginning its retraction from the impression platen 25 and descends 'lhrou h its web feeding stroke while the bed p aten 26 is completing its retraction from the impression platen. 25 and beginning its subsequent advance toward the bed platen 25.
For convenience I may mount on the end of the bars 98 a tray 198 to receive the web sections as they are cut off by the severing mechanism.
