DOMESTIC APPLIANCE Original Filed March 31, 1925 I I I I /05 A4) 33 I06 3 n x m 5:1- Tll- H v m f u I E 0 0 Patented June 9, 1931 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE RALPH L. LEE, OF DAYTON, OHIO, ASSIGNOIR TO DEL'OO LIGHT COMPANY, OF DAYTON,
OHIO, A. CORPORATION OF DELAWARE DOMESTIC APPLIANCE Original application filed. March 31, 1923, Serial No. 629,201.
The present invention relates to washing machine tubs and particularly to the removable cover therefor. This invention is a division of my copending application Serial Number 629,201, filed March 31, 1928.
It isamong the objects of the present invention, to provide for the ready removal or the ready assembly of the cover and tub, to provide for latching the cover in position, and to simplify the construction to facilitate the manufacture and reduce the cost thereof.
Further objects and advantages of the present invention will be apparent from the following description, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, wherein a preferred form of embodiment of the present invention is clearly shown.
In the drawings:
Fig. 1 is a sectional view of a washing machine tub and cover therefor, and
Fig. 2 is a fragmentary sectional View taken on line 22 of Fig. 1.
Referring to the drawings, there is shown a tub 23 of the type applicable to an oscillating type washing machine. It is to be understood however, that the present invention may be utilized with other types of washing machines. Tub 23 is arranged to oscillate on trunnions, one of which is shown at 51. The top of the tub 23 is provided with an opening to receive a cover or lid 102. The opposite sides of the tub are provided with downwardly projecting deflectors 83, which deflectors prevent the full force of the water being directed on the under side of the cover 102.
The tub 23 is also provided with parallel ends vertically disposed, the upper ends of each carrying a tub lid rail which rails are located between deflectors 83. Tub lid rail 100 comprises an angle iron with a horizontally disposed arm upon which the tub lid 102 is adapted to rest. The tub lid 102 is provided with sides 101 and ends 103. Each tub end 103 carries a leaf spring mem her 104 riveted at its middle portion as shown at 104a. The ends of members 104 are provided with right angle bends to provide ears 105 which are received by open- Divided and this application filed May 25,
Serial No. 32,584.
100 to latch the cover in position. The lid- 102 is provided with a pair of handles adacent the ends thereof, one of which is shown at 106. When the lid .102 is pulled upwardly by these handles, the spring memher 104 will yield to permit the ear. to pass the horizontal arm of angle iron 100. The
spring member 10 1 will also yield in the same manner when the lid is beingplaced on the tub.
It is apparent that a relatively simple construction has been provided for impositively' locking the lid of a washing machine tub in position. It is necessary only to push the lid downwardly to latch same in position or pull upwardly on the lid to remove it, the member 10% being constructed in such a manner as to latch the lid in position and the tension between the ears 105 and rails 100 being such that the lid 102 will not be displaced during the operation of the washing machine, due to the striking of water thereagainst.
While the form of embodiment of the present invention as herein disclosed, constitutes a preferred form, it is to be understood that other forms might be adopted, all coming within the scope of the claims which follow.
WVhat is claimed is as follows:
1. Washing apparatus having a tub provided with an opening, and a rail providing a wall about said opening, a cover for said opening including a projecting flange received by the tub opening adjacent the rail, said flange having a slot, a resilient member having one portion rigidly secured to the flange, said member having a wedgeshaped end extending through the slot, the
one edge of said end engaging the inside edge of the rail when the cover is in position on the tub for yieldingly holding the cover in sealing position on the tub.
2. lVashing apparatus having a tub provided with an opening,-a cover extending 1ns1de sa1d opening for sealing said openinc ing, a plurality of spring-pressed members carried at a plurality of spaced apart points by one of said elements and adapted to cooperate with the other element for impositively locking the cover at said plurality of points on-said tub in sealing position, said member being disposed within the inclosure formed by the tub and cover.
8. \Vashing apparatus having a tub pro vided with an opening, a cover extending inside said opening for sealing said opening, a spring-pressed member carried by said cover, said member having a wedge-shaped end adapted to frictionally engage a-portion of the tub for yieldingly holding the cover in sealing position on the tub.
4. lVashing apparatus having a tub provided with an opening, a cover extending inside said opening for sealing said opening, means for impositively locking said cover on the tub in sealing position, said means including a latching member cooperating-with said elements and including a spring-pressed member carried by one of said elements in spaced relation with the first member and adapted to frictionally engage the other element said springpressed member being disposed within the inclosure formed by the tub and cover.
In testimony whereof I hereto affix my signature.
RALPH L. LEE.
