the cap of a fountain pen in connection with which I have illustrated my invention, and a fastening clip attached thereto, a certain portion of the figure being broken away to illustrate parts in section; Fig. 2 is a section taken on the line 2-2 of Fig. 1; Fig. 3 is a view similar to Fig. 1 illustrating a modified form of the attaching means for the clip; Fig. 4 is a section taken on the line 44 of Fig. 3; Fig. 5 is a view similar to Fig. 1 illustrating a further modification of my invention; Fig.
6 is a section taken on the line 66 of Fig. 5; V
Fig. 7 is a view similar to Fig. 1 illustrating a still further modified form of my invention, and Fig. 8 is a sectional plan view taken along the line 88 of Fig. 7. I
Like reference characters indicate like parts throughout the drawings.
Referring now to the drawings, and first to Figs. 1 and 2, 10 is the cap of a fountain pen, the same being oftubular form to which is attached a fastening clip 11. The wall of the cap 10 is perforated and is here shown as formed with two openings 12. The base portion 13 of the fastening clip is provided with lugs 14 which extend through the openings 12 in the wall of the cap 10. Inthe embodiment of my invention illustratedin Figs. 1 and 2,
the lugs 14 are perforated as at 15, and a bar 7 16 passes through said openings on the inside of the wall of the tubular member and extends slightly beyond the perforated portionof the wall of the pen cap.
The ends of the lugs 14 are turned outwardly and upwardly over the ends of the bar 16 and preferably into engagement, or substantial engagement, with the inner wall of the pen cap. The operation of bending the ends of the lugs outwardly and upwardly over the ends of the bar is performed by a suitable tool which need not be described. In the embodiment of my invention here illus trated, the lugs 14 are struck up from-the base portion '13 ofthe' fastening clip. v
In the embodiment of my invention illustratedin Figs-B and 4, a'staple 17 provided with two lugs '14 is secured to the base 13 of the fastening clip preferably b y welding, and the lugs extend through openings in the wall of the .pen cap as they doin Fig. 1. In
3? fm yinvention here shown, the bar 16 is'fla't and lies against the inner surface of the wall of the pen cap. The ends of the lugs 14 are bentup around' the ends of the lugs 14 .as in Fi l. i
:In the embodiment o my lnventioniillustrated in Figs. 5 and 6, a staple 17 is secured to the .base'portion 13 of the clip as in Fig.
3, and the ends thereof arebent outwardly and upwardly and preferably bite into the wall of thepen clip. l
In the embodiment of my invention illus trated in Figs. 7 and 8, a flat or c lindrical plate 18 is provided with two sets 0 openings l 12 and 12 This'plate is placed within the cap or other tubular member, and the lugs 14 are inserted through the openings 12, 12 of j the two sets, and the ends thereof'vare then bent outwardly andupwardly into the openings'l2 g-l2 thereby securely attaching the fastening clip to the wallof the cap.
Fastening clips have usually been attached to a pen cap or the wall of a pencil by riveting the same thereto. Difficulty has been experienced, however, because of the tendency of 1 the pivots to be torn out either of the clip or the wall of the tubular member to which itis fastened, or both. V I m In accordance with'my invention, no rivets are provided which can in practice be loos ened. Furthermore, the attaching means for the pen clip, whichare provided in accordance with my invention, securely attach the pen clip to the tubular member with no possibility of its being disengaged therefrom. Furthermore, the outer portion of the fastening clip attached to the tubular member in accordance with my invention, presents a plain surface with no rivets appearing and Whichis sightly in appearance.
I claim:
1. In a device of the character described, a
tubular member the wall of which is provided with two spaced openings, a fastening clip the base of which comprises twov lugs extending through said openings, and a bar provided with openings located within said tubulartmember and spanningsaid openings and extending beyond the same, the ends of said lugs passing through said openings and bein bent upwardly and outwardly to secure sai bar in position against the inner wall of said tubular member. 7 I 2. In a device of the character described, a tubular member the wall of which is provided with two spaced openings, a fastening clip 7 having a base portion: adapted to engage said ,7 i I straight portion welded to the base portion of through said openings, thev ends of-said lugs,
tubular. member, and a .staple havmg asaid-clip and formed with lugs extending i being bent to secure the clip in position against the outer wall of said tubular meme her.
I tubularmember the wall of which is provided with two spaced openings,'a fastening clipthe base of which comprises two lugs extending through said openings, and a flat bar provided with two sets of openings, each set i comprising two openings, the respective lugs extending through one of the openingsofeach set and being bent at their ends upwardly into the other openings. 1
4. Ina device of the'character described, a tubular member having a perforated wall, a fastening clip thebase of which comprises two perforated lugs extending through said i perforated wall, and a bar extending through the perforations of said lugs within the wall 7 of said tubular member and beyond the perforated portion of said wall, the ends of said over the ends of said bar.
,3. In a device of'the character described, a
