PEA SHUCKER Filed May 15, 1930 E 34 ca --35 1N VE N TOR BEATElcE M 9N6 as ATTORNEY Patented June 2, 1931 UNITED STATES BEATRICE I. MANGES,
OF CLEVELAND; oHro PEA sH cKEa Application filed May 15,
This invention relates to pea shucker-s, and
it has for its purpose the provision of a utensil by means of which it will be possible to split the pea pods and remove the peas from the split pods in quick order, and with Fig. 3 is a transverse section taken on line 33 of Fig. 1.
Fig. 4: is a partial section taken on line 4:4l of Fig. 1. Y r
Fig. 5 is a partial section taken on line- 55 of Fig. 1.
Referring to the drawings: The frame 25 of the invention comprises a back plate designated at 10, mounted upon which are a number of hollow tubes 11 soldered or otherwise fastened in a fixed position, and the said tubes 11 are reinforced at the upper end by 30 a downturned portion 12, the whole tube then being slotted at 13 from the top to within say an inch of the lower end which rests against the inner wall of the upturned flange 11 of the plate 10, and the lower end of the tube 11 is angularly cut away on the under side at 15 and directly over a slot 16 in the plate 10. Side walls of the plate are also upturned as at 17 and 18, and the entire frame is rein- 40 forced by the wire 19 which is held in position by peening the edges of the plate 10, bot tom flange l l andthe side walls 17 and 18 over the wire and solderingit in place. The wire 19 bends downward at 20 to enclose the 45 upper portion of the plate 10 and a second wire 21 is attached to the reinforcing wire 19 at 20 and is then carried up to beyond the plate 10 then bent upwards and backward to the base of the plate 10 where it is again fastened to the reinforcing wirel9 at 22, thus forming guides 23iupon which the pod opener 1930; Serial No. 452.659.
24 and the releaser 25 are mounted.
The pod opener 2 is formed froma flat sheet of metal cut at sufiicient intervals to form the cutting points26-which fit within C5 the slots 13 in the top. of thetubes 11 the said podop-ener 24 beingllnounted on the guides 23 which extend through the apertures 27in the pod opener 24 thus allowing the pod opener to move freely upon the said -6.
The releaser 25 is formed of a double sheet of metal one portion. forming. spoon shaped projections 28 cut outthe same num; ber of times as the pod opener 24; and fitting 06.
within thev slots 18 inthe same manner only nearer'thetop of the guides 23. vThe other portion of the releaser 25' is, shaped in. a similar manner except that the projections 29 are shorter, more straightand'split at the 22. end 30 thus'forming aprong for the removal ofthe empty pods. e; 4 i The releaser25 and the pod opener24 are each turned overa reinforcing wire 31v and 32-at the; top. L v p 7 i C1 A secondary wire 33 is attached to the reinforcing wire lQeWithin-the' peened over edge of the plate flOand projects out beyond the plate 10 to the same distanceas the guides 23, forming a handle. H V
In operation the-pods 34: are thrustinto the tubes 11 by the" downward motion of the hand, the .releaser 25 is pressed down to keep pods intact during operation of the pod opener 24:. The podqopener 24: which C rests at-the base of the tubes llis then drawn f upward s'littingthe pods 34 and coming'to rest belowreleaser 25. Both are then drawn downward, the spoon shaped. projections 01" fin 'ers28-scooping the peas 35 frornthe pods 3.4 and dropping them through the slot16. The releaser'25is then pivoted asgfar .backwardas possible ontheguides 23 by means of the slot 36 in the releaser 25, thus1noving the spoon shaped projections 28 up outofthe (itway and pushing the prongs 29 downward, then as the releaser is again pushed up to the first position the prongs engage the empty pods and draw them upward and out at the top, discharging them from the tubes 11.
I claim:
1. A pea shucker comprising a frame having guides at the sides, a set of slotted tubes fixedto the frame, a slitterextending across the tubes and movable along said guides and having points projecting through the slots into the tubes to split pods therein, and a discharger extending across the tubes and movable along the guides and having fingers projecting through the slots to discharge peas from the split pods.
2. A pea shucker as inclaim 1, the discharger also having prongs engageable With the pods to dislodge the same from the tubes by reverse movement of the same. 3. A pea shucker comprising an elongated slotted tube capable of holding a plurality of pea pods in -line,'a slitter movable along the tube and projecting through the slot toslit all the pods at one stroke, and a discharger movable along the tube and having a projection extending through the slot to remove thepeas from the pods when moved in one direction, the discharger also having a prong pro jecting through the slot and engageable With the pods to dislodge the same from the tube when moved in the, opposite direction. V 4. A pea shucker comprising a plurality of elongated parallel slotted tubes, ineach of which a, plurality of pea pods may be placed, a slitter extending across the tub-es and having a plurality of cutting points extending through the slots-in the tubes respectively to split pods therein {said slitter being'm'ovable lengthwise along the tubes, and a discharger extending across the tubes and movable lengthwise thereof and having fingers projecting through the slots to dislodge peas from the pods by movement in 40 one direction, the discharge also having prongs projecting through the slots and adapted to discharge pods from the tubes by reverse movement of the discharger.
5. -A p-eashucker comprising a frame having a pair of spaced parallel guides, a plurality of parallel elongated slotted tubes between said guides, a slitter plate" movable along the guides in front of the tubes and I having points projecting through the slots to slit pods in the tubes, and a discharger plate movable along the guides infront. of the tubes and having 'jfingers; Working through the slots to discharge the peas from V thepods' i "6'. A pea shuckeras in claim 5,"th'e discharger plate also having prongs projecting through the slots and adapted to discharge pods from the tubes by reverse movement of the plate.
In testimony whereof, I doaiiin my signature. a I BEATRICE I. MANGES.
