Description
June 2, 1931. J BURNS HEADDRESS RETAINING DEVICE Filed Nbv. 8, 1950 Patented June 2, 1931 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE JAMES E. BURNS, OF MILFORD, CONNECTICUT, ASSIGNOR TO-TI-IE- A. J'. DONAHUE COR- PORATION, OF MILFORD, CONNECTICUT, A CORPORATION HEADDRESS-RETAINING DEVICE Application filed November 8, 1930. Serial No. 494,223.
This invention relates to an improvement 1n headdress-retaining devices, that 1s, a device comprising a clasp adapt-ed to be connected with the hair and a yoke carried by the clasp, which yoke will hold a ribbon or other suitable material.
The object of this invention is to provide a device for this purpose which will be simple in construction and in which the clip-member acts as a locking device for the yoke so that the yoke cannot be disengaged after the clip is attached to the hair.
The invention consists in the construction as hereinafter described and particularly recited in the claim.
In the accompanying drawings:
Fig. 1 is a plan view of a headdress-reta1ning device constructed in accordance with my invention;
Fig. 2 is a side view of the same, indlcatmg a headdress connected therewith;
Fig. 3 is an end View of the same;
Fig. 4 is an under-side view of the same;
Fig. 5 is a sectional View on the line 5-5 of Fig. 2;
Fig. 6 is a similar view showing the hooked end of the clasp moved inward for disengagement with the clasp; and
Fig. 7 is a similar view with the yoke turned to an open position to facilitate the insertion of a headdress.
In carrying out my invention, I employ a yoke 10. formed from sheet-metal or other suitable material and of any preferred de sign, and a clasp 11 similar to the clasp shown in U. S. Patent No. 1,531,122, granted May 24, 1925.
The clasp consists of a top-bar 12, a bottombar 13, end- bars 14 and 15, and a tongue 16 pivotally mounted on one of the bars, as 15,
and formed at its opposite end with a tip 17 adapted to rest upon the other end-bar 14. Pivotally mounted on the said bar 14 is a locking-lever 18 formed with a tongue 19, adapted to fold over onto the-free end of the tongue 16.
In this construction, the top-bar 12 is inwardly oifset at its center to form a pintle 20 for one end of the yoke 10, this end 21 being folded around the pintle 20. The other end of the yoke is formed with a hook 22 adapted to engage with an inset 23 formed in the bar 13, this inset being like the pintle 20. The proportions of the parts is such that when the tongue is in its locked position, the hook 22 cannot be disengaged from the inset 23.
For use, the clasp is first opened and the hooked end ofthe yoke disengaged therewith. A bow or ribbon 24 or other suitable material is then passed through the yoke and the hook 22 engaged with the inset 23 so as to firmly hold the bow. The tongue 16 is then passed beneath a strand of hair and the parts moved I so that the end of the tongue rests on the bar 14 and the locking-lever is turned down upon it. In this position, the tongue stands between the two ends of the yoke and the proportions are such that when the tongue is thus locked in position, the hooked end of the yoke cannot be disengaged therefrom.
I thusprovide in a very simple way a head'- dress-retaining device which will hold the headdress in position so that it cannot become detached without disengaging the clasp from the tress of hair.
I claim:
A headdress-retaining device comprising a clasp, said clasp comprising topand bottombars having ,inset portions, a tongue pivotally connected with one end of said clasp and extending into engagement with the other end of the clasp and lying in a plane of said off sets, when so engaged, a locking-lever pivotally connected with one end of the clasp and a i adapted to be folded over the free end of said tongue, and'a yoke hingedly connected with one inset portion and formed at its opposite end with a hook adapted to engage with the other inset portion whereby the yoke is locked in its closed position by the said tongue. 7
In testimony whereof, I have signed this specification.
- JAMES E. BURNS.
