COMBINED MONEY BANK AND ARTICLE HOLDER i Filed June 1o. 1929 l 2 sheets-sheet 2 Patented May 26, 1931 JNTED STATES PATENT ortica VINCENT PAUL PARCHEN, Ot`l CHICAGO, ILLINOIS, ASSIGNOR OF ONE-HALF TO ALBERT H. KOLKER, OF CHICAGO, ILLINOIS COMBINED MONEY BANK AND ARTICLE HOLDER Application led .Tune 10, 1929. Serial No. 369,876.
This invention relates to a device serving the combined purpose of a money bank and a holder for an article of frequent use, access to Which can be attained only by the insertion of money into the bank.
The object of the invention is to provide an improved construction of such a device, and one which, While being very reliable in service and convenient in use, can be made very economically,V
The invention proceeds upon the principle or having, in a money bank, an extra compartment in Which may be placed an article of daily use, for instance, a shaving outfit or other toilet article, and having the closure for such holder and the slot through which money is introduced into th-e bank so related and connected by locking mechanism that insertion of money through the slot will act upon the locking mechanism to release the closure; the closure and the slot` being located in one and the same Wall of the bank; the locking mechanism comprising a pair of pivoted levers having their ends associated in pairs, with one pair of ends presented in the path of the money introduced through the slot, and the other pair of ends arranged in clogging relation to the closure. In its preferred form, the invention contemplates the use of a sliding tray as the holder; an arrowhead keeper on said tray through the medium ot' which the locking mechanism enters into dogg-ing relation with the tray; the crossing of the tvvo levers at a common fulcrum point; and the deflecting of the ends of the levers to provide projections through which said ends, respectively, coact With the deposited money and With the tray-like ensure.
In the accompanying drawings Figure 1 is a perspective view of a combined bank and article holder With the closure or tray in open position.
Figure 2 is a section of the same in a vertical longitudinal medial plane indicated generally by the section line 25e-2m in Figure 1.
Figure 3 is a section in a medial transverse plane with the tray closed.
Figure l is a horizontal section on thc line lm- 4m of Figure 3. Figure 5 is a section on the line 5-5f0 of Figure 3; and
Figure 6 is a section on Figure 5.
1 represents ,the money bank which, for the purpose of giving access to its money compartment 2, is preferably constructed With a removable top 3 secured in some suitable manner, such7 for instance, as by tongue and groove engagement 4l: (Figure 2) at one end oi the bank, and a key controlled lock 5 at the other end thereof. Beneath the money compartment 2 the bank has a compartment 6 Which is adapted to serve `as an article holder, preferably through means of a tray N the line 6x-6m of fitted therein. This tray 7 is adapted to be intruded into the compartment 6 in opposition to ejecting spring 8 until the front 9 of the tray becomes flush with the front Wall 10 of the bank, in which position the tray Will be automatically latched through the medium of the arrowheador equivalent keeper 11 interengaging with a pair of dogs 12V (see Figures 1 and Locking dogs 12 are provided by the inturned lovvcr ends of a pair of levers 13 crossed and mounted upon a common fulcrumpin 14, and having their upper ends 15 presented in the path of money7 introduced through the slot 16 in the front Wall 10 of the' bank. Levers 13 are normally drawn togetherby spring 17 to yieldinfglfy hold their `dogging ends 12 and money controlled ends 15 in effective position; andthe money controlled locking 'mechanism thus provided is mounted upon the same Wall ot the bank in Which the slot 16 is termed and theA closure 9 is fitted;` said mounting being effected through the medium of a lock case 18 mounted on the inner tace of said Wall 10. The pair of ends 15, as shown infFigure 6, may be provided With one or more sharp edges to resist retracting a coin that hasl once been started through the slot.
From the foregoing description it Wili be seen that the invention contemplates a pair of pivoted levers having their upper and lower ends relatedhin pairs, for the purposes stated, and mounted upon the same Wall 10 in which are provided the deposit slot 16 and the compartment closure 9; also that the levers eXtend from the slot which is in the upper portion of the wall to the closure which is in the lower portion thereof, and as shown in Figure 3, this arrangement affords a very compact, simple, and reliable mechanism occupying minimum space within the money compartment.
10 l claim:
l. A, combined money bank and article holder Constructed with a deposit slot, a relatively movable article compartment adapted to support an article, and pivoted locking levers having their ends related in pairs; one pair ot ends being presented in the path of money deposited through said slot; the other pair oi ends being arranged in clogging relation to said closure7 the locking levers having their ends that are presented in the path of the money, deflected each toward the other1 and constructed to provide a ratchet to resist return movement of money started through the slot.
2. A combined money bank and article holder constructed with a` deposit slet, a relatively movable compartment adapted to support an article, means for locking said compartment against moving, and means opao erated by a coin as it passes through said slot to cause an unlocking of said coaipartn'ient,
said last mentioned means including ratch ets shaped to resist a reversal of movement o'l' a coin. an 3. The combination with a drawer adapted to support an article of frequent and regular use, of' pivotal levers 'for looking said drawer, said levers including a related pair et ratchet portions and being arranged to be swung apart by the passage ot a eoin between said ratchet portions, a spring` `for thereupon opening said drawer, and cam means on said drawer arranged to again spread said levers apart upon the closing of said drawer to release a coin caught more than halfway past said ratchet portions.
4. A combined money bank and article holder constructed with a deposit slot, a movable closure, means for locking said closure against movement7 and means operated by the eoin as it passes through said slot to cause an unlocking of said closure, said last mentioned means includingr ratehets shaped to resist a reversal of movement o the coin.
Signed at Chicago, Illinois, this 5th day of June, 1929.
