OPENING, CLOSING, AND LATCHING MECHANISM Filed Sept. 27. 1928 Fig! I FZ10-2 [Nl/ENTOES 9x5; WHSBEECi K5 THJ. 705
Patented May 26, 1931 UNITED STATES AXEL WASBERG AND KENNETH J. TOBIN, OF CHICAGO, ILLINOIS, ASSIGNOR T CAMEL PATENT OF COMPANY, OF orrroaeo, ILLINOIS, A oonromrro v or rumors OPENING, oLosIN 'ANnnA'roHnve MECHANISM I Application filed September 27,1928; seria1INa-eos es1i= willbe noted that the lever is it This invention relates to door opening, 7 closing and latching means, and concerns itself with mechanism for swinging the latching bar of the door and securing the in 5 same in closed position.
The invention comprises the novel struc- Figure 2 is a fragmentary end elevationalview showing the parts in a different position.
Figure 3 is an enlarged fragmentary end elevational view taken adjacent the corner of the car.
Figure 4 is an enlarged sectional View taken upon the line IVIV of Figure 3.
As shown on the drawings:
In the drawings there is shown a part of the end of a house car embodying a door 1 hinged to an end wall of the car by hinges 2. A casting 3 is secured to the door,
asecond casting 4 is pivoted to the casting 3 and a latching bar 5 is rigidly secured to P the casting 4. The latching bar which is swingable upon the pivot 6 of the two castings is provided with an'upper casting 7 and a lower casting 8. Each casting 7 and 8 has a projecting lip or flange 9. Upon the upper and lower parts of the car are oppositely facing keepers 10 and 11. Each keeper has a flaring wall 12 which draws the ends of the latching bar ,5 inwardly.
The flanges 12 are provided with overhanging lips 13 under which the llps or flanges 9 on the castings 7 and '8 engage, rwhereby the top and bottom of the car are tied together.
Upon the lower end of the door, there is secured a casting 14 upon whicha-hookshaped lever 15 is pivoted as indlcated at Figure 1 is a fragmentary end elevational pivotally seouredat one: end and has an upwardly extending, hook-shaped end 15a rising jabove the pivot. Upon the latching bar 5,. there is a-casti-ng havinga shoulder 56 adjacent which there is pivoted a hook 17' with which the hook shaped" end 15a ofrth-e: lever 15is adapteditocooperate. The outerperiphery 156 (Figure 3):,ofthe-hookshapedxend. 15a is in the. .fiO-YHL' of a: cam. for a purpose that will later appear.
The lower casting. Son the-latching bar 52 is provided With-a: sheath 18 through which a latching bolt 19 extendsi This latching bolt; ltlextendsr tl-l'roug'h an aperture inthebottomof the. keeper 11 and thusw-ise locks the latching. bar 5' when in latching; position again-st swinging; movements. It will be noted that the lower end of the: locking: pin
19; is provided with a slope 20v Whereby,:- fwhen-ithei bar is-swung. from the position shown inaF-igure; 2 to. the position shown in Figure 1,; this sloping" end will stri-keithe keeper andibe elevated and will travel; along upon theba-se of the :keeper until ilil registers with-Lthe a erture therein when it will automatically'orop-thereiir by gravity and latch the. bar 5 in its operative position. The pin 19 must be manually elevated when itis desired to swing; the bar 5 inoperative position. p
r The sheath 18:and pin 19: are? provided with reg istering apertures 21 for: receiving a" sealing wire' 22 for" securing the' door against unauthorized opening;
Assuming thatuthe door is in" closed posi tion' as shown-in; Figure 2 withthe latching bar 5 in inoperative position tandaitis che- 'si-redito draw ihebar'5 to-itsoperative position. To do this,- the hooked end? of the lever-v15 iswengaged; with: the. hook? 17 and the lever is then swung: downwardly, the
V pina-ltbriding over thez baseof the keeper and automatically droppingby gravity into its latching? aperture: when the rod: 5 has been swung. to: its ioperativel position. Nowif" it 7 is: desired to swing the bar in :theopposite direction* the pins- 19' is manually. elevated fdthe: lever-.1 1i5 isselevated to 'bring the eam surface 15?) against the casting 5m This cam surface will act against the casting 500 as the lever 15 is elevated and swing the bar outwardly. It will, of course, be understood that the ends of the bar 5 are usually wedged in under the keepers and considerable force is required to initially swing the bar 5 from its operative position. The lever 15 readily produces this initial movement of the bar.
We are aware that many changes may be made and numerous details of construction may be varied through a wide range without departing from the principles of this invention, and we, therefore, do not propose limiting the patent granted hereon, otherwise than necessitated by the prior art.
We claim as our invention:
1. In a house car, a hinged door, keepers above and below said door, a latch bar pivoted upon said door and engageable under said keepers, a hook upon the lower end of said bar and a cam lever having a hooked portion for enga ing said hook for drawing the lower end 0? the bar in one direction and a cam portion for forcing said bar in the other direction.
2. In a house car, a hinged door, keepers above and below said door, a latch bar pivoted upon said door and swingable under said keepers, a hook upon the lower end of said bar, a lever pivoted to said car and having a hooked portion for engaging said hook and swinging said bar to its operative position, said lower keeper having an aperture and a latching member slidably carried by said bar and movable into said aperture when said bar is in operative position.
3. In a house car having a hinged door, keepers above and below said door, a swingable latch bar upon said door for engaging under said keepers, cooperating means on said car and door for drawing said bar to its operative position, and means automatically operated when said latch bar is in operative position for latching the same against movement.
4. In a house car having a hinged door, keepers above and below said door, a latch bar pivoted to said door and swingable un der said keepers, and a latching member carried by said bar and movable into latching engagement with the lower keeper when said bar is in its operative position.
5. In a house car having a hinged door,
keepers above and below said door, a latch bar pivoted to said door and swingable under said keepers, a hook upon sald bar and a lever plvoted upon said car and having a hooked portion for engaging said hook and moving said bar to operative position, and latching means carried by said bar and movable into engagement with the lower keeper when said latch bar has been moved to Operative position for latching the same against movement. a
In testimony whereof, we have hereunto subscribed our names at Chicago, Cook County, Illinois.
