Description

y 1931- H. L. JOHNSON ET AL 7 CAM LOCK FOR SCREENS AND STORM WINDOWS Filed May 16, 1929 INi JENTCkS Herbert L. John -9n JameslLGfdhZ' Patented May 12,. 1931 UNITED STATES HERBERT L. zronlvsonnnn JAMEs H. GRANT, or DEXTER, MAINEI X CAM LOCK non scnnnns nivnvsronivr wnvnows i I Application filed May 16,
device for use in connection with screens and storm windows whereby, when thelatter are positioned in place,-they may be locked firm- 1y against the frame to securely hold them in place and, in the case of storm windows, to hold the same so that all cracks between the window and frame arerclosed; to provide a device which is of simple construction and therefore susceptible of cheap manufacture and low marketing cost.
With this object in view, the invention consists in a construction and combination of parts of which a preferred embodiment is 15. illustrated in the accompanying drawings wherein: 1 Figure 1 is a front elevational view showing the invention applied as ameans for holding storm windows.
Figure 2 is anedge elevational View of the structure of Figure 1.
-Figure 3 is a perspective view of one of the brackets and its associated locking roller;
Figure 4 is a detail sectional view on the plane indicated by the line 4c4 of Figure 3. While the invention is shown applied as a means for holding the storm sash '10, it is equally applicable as a meansfor'holding a screen should that replace the storm sash on -the window frame 11. The invention comprises a plurality of brackets having base plates 12 formed with integral arms 14, the latter being at right angles to the base plate, so that when the plate is attached to the frame 11, the arms will extend outwardly from the frame. The arm is reinforced with a web 15 formed integrally with it and the base plate.
Fasteners such as screws 16 are employed to secure the base plate to the frame 11, these screws passing through slots 17 formed in the base plate and opening on that edge of the base plate where the armispositioned. The slots 17 provide for slightadjustment' of the brackets in mounting, so as to most conveniently position them. I
The arms act as side guides for the storm sash 10 and the locking means consist of rollers 18 of, which each bracket isprovided with one, the rollers being rotatably mounted on.
1929. Serial No. I
pins 19 carried. at the outer ends fof-thefarms and disposed eccentrically' of the rollers. Each. roller is providedwi-tha plurality of peripheral sockets QOadj'acent its mounting pin 19, the sockets beingfor -the selective re. '55 'ception of a pin wrench by whichthe rollers may be rotated so as to swing them into clamping engagement with the sash, since they overhang the outer face of the latter.
Obviously the locking operation consti- 1 o tut-es the turning of the rollers toward the sash when they are brought into binding engagement with the latter and force the sash against the frame '11 between which and the sash a dust strip 21 may be inserted which of course may be omitted where the invention is employed as a screen holding means. To release the sash, the rollers are swung away from the latter, when the sash may be dropped down between the brackets to dis place them. f I
The invention having been described,what is claimed as new and useful is:
' 1. In combination with a window frame and covering element therefor, brackets mounted on the frame on opposite sides of the latter and embodying projecting arms acting as side guides for the covering ele-v ment, and clamping members carried at the extremity of the arms and in bearing engagement with the outer face of the covering element.
2. In combination with a window frame and covering element therefor, brackets mounted on the frame on opposite sidesof the latter and embodying projecting arms acting as side guides for the covering ele-- ment, and clamping members carried at the extremity of the arms and in bearing engagement with theouter face of the covering e1ement, said clamping members consisting of rolls having pivotal mountings on the arms disposed eccentrically of the rolls. I
3. In combination with a window frame and r covering element therefor, brackets -95 mounted on the frame on opposite sides of the latter and embodying projecting arms acting as side guides forthe covering element,
and clamping members carried at the extremity of the arms and in bearing engage- I00 ment with the outer face of the covering element, said clamping members consisting of rolls having pivotal mountings on the arms disposed eccentrically of the rolls and the rolls being formed on the periphery adjacent the pivots with spaced sockets for se lective use with a in wrench.
4. A storm sas and screen holding element consisting of abracket having abase late provided with an arm extending thererom, and a roll having an eccentric pivotalmounting at the extremity of the arm and provided with peripheral sockets for the reception of a pin wrench, the base plate having fastener receiving slots opening at that edge Of the plate at which the arm is disposed.
In testimony whereof they aflix their signatures. V V HERBERT L. JOHNSON.
