UNirED STATES VHAROLD WIEDEMANN, orsmfrrnn, WASHINGTON DISPLAY TABLET Applieation. filed January s, 1929. serialwno. 330,035.v
My present invention relates to improvements in display tablets or markers, which while adapted for use in various ways, are especially designed for use as memorial tablets, grave markers, &c.
The display tablet of my invention is of that type utilizing artificial stone fashionedr from plastic material suitable for the pur- Y pose, together with metal characters, symbols, floral designs, insignia, Vornamental features, &c., and the invention consists in certain novel combinations and arrangements with the body of the tablet, or slab, of these metal characters, etc., as will hereinafter be ornamentation, &c., is preerably. 1ncl1ned,
more fully set forth and claimed. Means are provided whereby the letters, or other features forming the display, are permanently secured in the tablet or slab against displacement, thus forming a durable device of this character. The parts forming the invention are simple in construction, may readily and with facility be assembled to provide a comparatively inexpensive cost of production, and at the same time the tablet or slab presents a neat and artistic appearance.
Means are provided whereby the subject matter displayed on the tablet may be artificially illumined by the use of electric lights which are invisible, or natural lighting effects may be attained, eitheriby` the use of colored glass or other transparent material, or by the reflection of natural light rays on the surface of the inscription or ornamental featuresv of the tablet. n
In the accompanying drawings I have illustrated one complete example of my invention physically embodied in a grave Vmarker or memorial tablet, and in which the parts are combined and'V arranged according to the best mode I have thus far devised for the practical application of the principles of my invention, butit will be understood thatthe invention may be embodied in other articles.``
AFigure l is a perspective view of a memorial tablet constructed according to my invention. I Figure 2 is an enlarged detail view showing the manner of spacing, arranging Vand fastening together the symbols, here shown as letters, before they are embedded inthe plastic material, which when hardened forms the body ofthe tablet. Figure 3 is an enlarged sectional detail view, transversely ofthe tablet, as atv line 3-3 of Figurefl.
Figure 4 is an end elevation of the letters as used at line t-- of Figure 2. T he body 1 of the tablet is preferablyfashioned from artificial stone, which is fashioned in a mold from plastic material, and afterward dried and hardened to form a durable body-for the tablet.
The upper face 2'for the inscription, data,
and polished if desired, andthesubject matterdisplayed as letters 3, orna1nental-bor--`` der 4, i'oralldesign 5, and dates .6, are all flush with vthe face of the tablet. These Venumerated features'are embedded in thek `facel of the tablet and. retainedv therein against displacement. For: instance, the letters as lLEE in Figure 2 are fashionedrof channel,-'=cast metal, each designatedfas t7, and the letters are provided'with inclined faces 8 to coact withthe inclined walls of grooves `9iin1the vface ofthe.V tablet.` Theletters are thus relations I utilized tie bars 14. Three of the i tie-bars are illustrated in Figure 2 and they are attached, as by spot-welding, or by soldering, at the backs of the letters. The vtie bars also become embedded in the artificial stone and furnish additional anchoring means Y with the dove-tail arrangement of the letters in the face of the tablet.
In the grooves 10a of the letters are seated and cemented panels 15 of glass or other suitable material, While in the border 4c, panels of glass, or other suitable material, indicated as 16, are cemented in the grooves 10 of the border. The floral design 5 and the dates 6, appearing on the face of the tablet are fashioned in like manner of grooved metal With contrasting panels inserted therein.
In some instances the natural light rays may be reflected from the panels in the letters and other features displayed on the face of the tablet, for the purpose of illuminating the letters and features so that they will have a prominent appearance on the face of the tablet.
For artificial illumination of the features displayed I may use incandescent electric lamps as 17 that are enclosed in a lamp box 2o 18 that is cast in the body of the tablet when the latter is fashioned in its mold, and the Wires 19 from a suitable source are passed through an open plug 20 fixed in the removable bottom 2l. The bottom has its edges seated in a side groove 22 extending around the edges of the box, and the bottom carries a turn button 23 having a fastening head 24 Within the box that frictionally engages the fastening lug 25 of the box, to retain the bottom in closed position, or to release the bottom so that it may be removed to permit access to the interior of the box. In the top of the boX are openings 26 through which light rays from the lamps 17 pass to illuminate the transparent panels 15.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to seeure by Letters Patent is l. The combination with a hardened plastic stone, of spaced channel-shaped letters embedded therein having edges flush with the face of the stone, tie bars connecting said letters and embedded in the stone, grooves in the side Walls of the Channel-shaped letters,
and panels of transparent material in said grooves.
2. The combination vvith an artificial stone having a lamp box cast therein and said lamp box being covered by the stone, of channel- SO shaped letters cast in said stone above the lamp box, said letters having countersunk grooves open to the lamp box, lamps in the box, and transparent panels seated in said letters and closing the grooves of the letters.
In testimony whereof I aflix my signature.
HAROLD WIEDEMANN.
