July 10, 1929. sci-m1 No. 377,128.
This invention relates to a slicker for the occupants of a rumble seat of an automobile to protect the occupant from rain.
The prime object of the invention resides in the provision of a slicker of this nature which is in the nature of a non-rigid top fitted to the rumble seat of the automobile and partially supported by the heads and shoulders of the wearers.
A still further very important object of the invention resides in the provision of a slicker structure of this nature having the front and side edges fitted with small pieces of rope designed to fit in the grooves provided around the edge of the opening of the rumble seat whereby the slicker is held in place and water is prevented from leaking down the front of the slicker onto the occupant.
A still further very important object of the invention resides in the provision of a slicker of this nature which is exceedingly simple in its construction, inexpensive to manufacture, easy to put on and take off, thoroughly efficient and reliable in use and otherwise well adapted to the purpose for which it is designed.
With the above and numerous other objects in view as will appear as the description proceeds, the invention resides in certain novel features of construction, and in the combination and arrangement of parts as will be hereinafter more fully described and claimed.
In the drawing:
Figure l is a perspective view showing the slicker in use,
Figure 2 is a detail of the lower end of the front of the slicker showing portions broken away to disclose pieces of rope,
Figure 3 is a similar view of the side,
Figure 4: is a sectional view through an edge of the slicker and a portion of the rumble seat opening showing the groove therein, and
Figure 5 is a plan view disclosing the canvas wear strip at the top.
Referring to the drawing in detail it will be seen that the numeral 5 denotes a front piece and the numeral 6 denotes a combined back and side piece and the rear portion of the back 6 is fixed to the rear edge of the front piece 5 and a piece 7 is interposed and connected to the pieces 5 and 6.
The piece 5 has head coverings 8 to fit over the heads of wearers and the necks of these head portions have fasteners 9 associated therewith.
The slicker is adapted to be placed over the back of the rumble seat as is clearly illustrated in Figure 1 and is thereby supported partially by the back and partially by the heads and shoulders of the wearers. A hem is formed on the lower edge of the piece 6 and the lower edge ofthe piece 5 and in the front and side hems there are formed pockets by stitching 11 and in these pockets are pieces of rope 12 so that the ropes may be wedged into the grooves 14: which are formed in the edge of the opening of the rumble seat structure and in this way the front and sides of the slicker are held firmly in place so that water cannot leak down onto the occupants of the rumble seat.
It is thought that the construction, utility and advantages of this invention will now be quite apparent to those skilled in this art without a more detailed description thereof. It is preferable to provide a canvas wear strip 16 at the top inside of the slicker to engage the upper edge of the rumble seat.
The present embodiment of the invention, however, has been disclosed in considerable detail merely for the purposes of exemplification since in actual practice it attains the features of advantage enumerated as desirable in the statement of the invention and the above description.
It will be apparent that changes in the details of construction, in the sizes, in the material, and in the combination and arrangement of parts may be resorted to without departing from the spirit or scope of the invention as hereinafter claimed or sacrificing any of its advantages.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new is:
1. A combination garment and top, for a rumble seat compartment in the rear deck of an automobile body having a groove formed at the edge of the compartment aperture, comprising a cape-like member extending to the edges of the compartment aperture and adapted to be draped over occupants of the rumble seat, said member having compressible securing means extending along the marginal portions thereof, said means having a thickness somewhat greater than the width of said groove and wedged into the same.
2. A weather protective covering for automobile body rumble seat compartments and occupants thereof, comprising a covering of flexible, weather-resisting material adapted to be draped over occupants of the rumble seat and to extend to the edges ofthe compartment aperture, and means associated with marginal portions of said covering for frictionally retaining the same in the marginal groove of the rumble seat compartment aperture, comprising an element constructed of compressible material and secured to the material of said covering, whereby the element may be wedged into the marginal groove and thereby frictionally engage the sides of the groove to retain the element in position in the groove.
- In testimony whereof I aflix my signature.
.DARREL XV. DAVIS.
