Description

Patented Apr. 28, 1931 WILLIAM H. QUADE, OF LOB ANGELES, CALL": L a.
PLASTER AND ST'UCGO REENFORCING BASE Application filed August 1, 1927. Serial No. 209,787.
My invention relates to a metal lath base, or a reenforcing base, or foundation, for supporting and reenforcing plaster, stucco, or other plastic material.
8 The objects of my invention are: first, to provide a base of this class having substantially rigid reenforcin and spacing means applied to a sheet bac 'ng for reenforcing the backing and the plaster, or other plastic 10 material, applied on the same and for spacing a wire netting at all portions from thesheet backing; second, to provide abase of this class in which the reenforcing means substantially rigidly supports the base to the studs of a wall and prevents the sheet backing'to which the reenforcing means is secured from bulging inwardly, thus, rigidly reenforcing the plastic material applied on the same and also providing a uniform thickness'of the plastic material on the base; third, to provide a base of this class in which the plastic material a plied on the same is uniformly reenforce throughout and rigidly supported on the studding of the wall on which the base is secured; fourth, to provide a base of this class which may be easily and rigidly secured to the studs, or other supporting means on the Wall, by merely securing the reenforcing means thereto; fifth, to
provide simple and unitary means for se-- curing poultr netting, or other wire netting, and the reen orcing means to a paper backing; sixth, to provide a base of this class in which staples, or other means, for securing the netting and reenforcing strips to the paper or other sheet backing are covered on the inside of the wall so as to prevent moisture from deteriorating the staples or other securing means; seventh, to provide a base of this class which, by reason of its construction, may be readily rolled and sold in rolls; eighth, to provide a base of this class which may be readily applied to the studs, or other supporting means of a wall by applying the long sheet longitudinally with and to the studs so that the edges thereof overlap and provide continuous reenforcing, the transversing reenforcing and spacing strips forming reenforcing means transversely to the studs; ninth, to provide reenforcing and spacing strips for a base of this class to which wire netting of different mesh may be secured; and, tenth, to provide, as a whole, a novelly constructed base of this class and one which is simple and economical of construction, durable, easy and efiicient of application and which will not readily deteriorate.
With these and other objects in view, as will appear hereinafter, my invention consists of certain novel features of construc tion, combination and arrangement of parts and portions, will be hereinafter described in detail and particularly set forth in the appended claims, refcrence being had to the accompanying drawings and to the characters of reference thereon which form apart of this application in which:
Figure l is :1 fragments elcvational view of a skeleton buildingwail, showing a fragmentary portion or my base secured thereto over a plurality of studs and also showing adjacent edges of adjacent sheets of the base overlapped; Fig. 2-is an enlarged view thereof; Fig. 3 is a sectional view thereof, taken on the line 33 of Fig. 2 and in the direc- 75 tion of the longitudinal extent of the sheet when rolled; Fig. 4 is an enlarged sectional view thereof, taken through 44c of Fig. 2, showing the means for securing the netting and reenforcing and spacing strips to the sheet backing; and, Fig. 5 is a perspective view of my backing in a roll.
Like characters of reference refer to similar parts and portions throughout the several views of the drawings. a
My reenforcing base, or foundation, for plaster, stucco, or other plastic material, consists essentially of a paper backing 1, reenforcing and spacing strips 2, wire netting 3, staples 4, a second or inner paper backing 5, and adhesive material 6.
The paper backing 1 provides the main support of my base and may be made of a relatively light weight of building paper, such as asphalt felt or other waterproof felt, or craft paper. When the base is rolled, the sheets are of considerable length and of such a Width as to extend over several studs, indicated by 7 in Fig. 1. The reenforoing strips 2 are made of sheet metal of channel shaped cross-section. with the outer edges vside of the paper backing 1. These strips extend transversely to the longitudinal extent of the paper when the same is adapted to be rolled and extend to substantially the edges of the paper, as shown. These strips-also extend parallel to each other and are spaced apart at a certain distance depending upon the mesh of the wire netting used. The wire netting 3, as shown in the drawings, is a conventional poultry netting and positioned lengthwise over and at the outer side of the paper backing 1 and is spaced therefrom by the strips 2 against the outer sides or the outer sides of the flanges 2a on which the netting is secured. The netting and the strips 2 are secured to the paper backing by staples 1 which extend outwardly from the back side of the paper backing and through spaced holes in the channel portion of the strips 2. The outer ends of the staples 4 are bent toward each other and around portions of the netting, as shown best in Figs. 2 and 4. The holes 2?; in the strips 2 through which the staples 4 extend are so arranged that poultry netting of different mesh may be secured to the same strips. In order to prevent moisture at the inside of the wall from having any deteriorating effect on the metal portions of the base or particularly on the portions of the staples at the inner side of the paper back ing 1, Ihave provided a covering 5 at the innor side of the paper backing 1. This covering 5 may be of the same material as the backing or sheet 1 and may be secured to the back side thereof by any suitable plastic material 6.
One edge of the wire netting is spaced inwardly from one edge of the paper backing 1, while the opposite edge of the netting extends beyond the opposite edge, as shown best in Figs. 1 and 2, so that the extended edge of the nettingof the adjacentl positioned base strip overlaps the paper ackingand reenforcingstrip of the adj acently positioned backing strip, as shown best in Fig. 1. The base is applied to the studding 7 by nails or staples which extend through the reenforcing'strips. hen staples are used, the same may secure simultaneouslythe reenforcing,
strips, as well as the adjacent edges of the netting, as shown in Fig. 1.
The base above described may be readily rolled, as shown in Fig.6, the netting and the paper yielding sufliciently to permit rolling and also to permit unrolling to assume their desired spaced relations, as shown in Fig. 3, in which the netting 3 is shown as spaced uniformly from the paper backing or support.
