rIhis invention relates to a seat frame de-V signed primarily for use in connection with fcrth,a strong, rigid, durable, inexpensiveV seat frame for not only supporting a seat member but further permanently providing a protecting means for the edges of'such member. K
A; further object of this invention is to'provide, ina manner as hereinafter set'forth,y a
seat frame including means for supporting a seat member and further so constructed to encompass the latter.y
lVith the foregoing and other objectsin view the invention consists of the novel construction, combination and arrangement of Vparts as hereinafter more specifically de-V scribed, and illustrated in the accompanying drawings, wherein is shewn an embodiment of the invention, but it is to be understood that changes, variations and modifications can be resorted to which fall within the scope of the claim hereunto appended.
in the drawings wherein like reference,
characters denote corresponding parts throughout the several views Figure 1 is a top plan view, partly broken away of a seat member showing the adaptation therewith of a seat frame in accordance with this invention.
lFigure 2 is a section on line 2 2, Figure 1.
Figure 3 is a fragmentary view in perspective of the seat frame. l
Figur-e 4 is a top plan view of a modied form of seat frame in accordance with this invention. Y
Figure 5 is a fragmentary view in perspective of the form shown in Figure 4.
Figure 6 is a fragmentary view in top plan of a seat frame in accordance with this in-l is a sectional detail illustrating vindicated at l11.
the kmeans for slidably couplingl the seat frame to the side rails of the chair backin Flach of the forms of seat frames as shown includes ayole shaped element of angleshaped cross section and a closure member for the open end of such element and with the major portion of saidmember being of angle-shaped cross section. The yokeshaped element of the form 'shown in Fig` nres 1, 2 and 3 is referred to generally at 8 and such element forming Ya part of the seat frame shownin Figures 4, 5, 6 and 'T is re- Y ferred to generally at 9. The closure member forming a part of the seatframe as shown in Figures l, 2 and 3 is generally indicated at 10 and theV closure .member of the form shown in Figures 4, 5,36 and 7 is generally y The element 8 consists of a front portion 12, a ypair of side portions 13, 14 and a pair of rounded outer corners 15, 16. The element 8 at any point throughout its length, in crosssecti-on is formed with a. vertically ydisposed part 1,7 and a horizontally disposed part 18, the latter terminating inwardly with respect to theends of the part 1'? to provide an abutment 19. The portions of the part Y17 which project from the ends of the part 18 have the inner faces thereof form anahut- Vnient 20. The part 18 forms a support for a Vseat member 21 and it' is provided with tends inwardlyfrom' the bottom of thepart 17 of such member. The closure member 10 includes a vertical part 23 and a horizontally disposedV part 24l which extends inwardly from the bottom of the part 23 andis of less length than the length of the latter. The part-23 projects beyond Vtheends of the part 24. T he length of party 24 corresponds to the distance'y between the edges of opposed member 10 is positioned at the rear of the element 8 for the purpose of closing the lat` Y portions ofthe part 18 yof the element 8. The
ico
ter, and when so positioned the part 24 of member 10 Yextends between opposed portions of the part 18 of member 8 and the end edges of part 24 abut against the edges of such op-V posed portions. The part 23 of member 10 abuts against the ends ofthe part 18 of member Sand also abuts against the inner faces of the ends of element 8. The outer face of part 23 is flush with the end edges of part 17 of element 8. The member l0 is welded to element 8. The part 24 of element 8 provides a support' for therear of the scat nie1nber 21 and is formed with openings 25 for the passage of holdtast devices to engage in the seat member 2l. The holdfast devices for connecting the seat member 21 to the seat frame are indicated at 26.
The element 9 consists ot a iront portion 27, a. pair of side portions 23a 29 and a pair of rounded outer corners 30. The clement 9 is formed olf a vertical part 31 and a horizontally disposed part 32 which extends inwardly from the bottom of the part 31. The parts 3l. and 32 are co-extensive with each other. The part 32 is provided with openingsl 33 for the passage of'holdfast devices to secure the seat member to the seat frame. The part 32 provides a support for the seat member.
The member 11 is employed for closing the inner end of element 9 and is welded thereto. The member 11 includes a vertical part 34 and a horizontally disposed part which extends inwardly from the bottom of the part 34 and is of less length than the length of the latter. The length of part 35 isthe same as the distance between opposed parts 32 of element 9 and when member l1 arranged in position, relative to elen'ient 9. part 35 extends between and abuts the opposed edges of the side portions 28, 29 of element 9 at the rear thereof. The part 34 abuis against the ends ot element 9 and is provided with forwardly extending end portions 33 which abut against the outer face ot the part 3l at the ends thereof. The end portions 3G are welded against the outer face of element 9. The portion 35 ot member 1l provides a support for the rear of the seat member and is formed with. openings 37 for the passage of holdfast devices to secure the rear of thc seat member to the seat frame.
Figures 6 and illustrate a laterally extending means carried by the yoke-shaped element for slidably connecting the seat frame to thc'channeled side rails of the chair back.
The laterally extending` means is tixedly secured to the side portions of the yoke-shaped element in proximity to the rear ends of such element. The laterally extending means provides what may be termed slidable cou pling elements and which when fixed to the yoke-shaped element extend in opposite di# rections with respect to eachother. Each slidable coupling element consists of a circular body portion 38 having extending from its inner face a protuberance 39 of materially less diameter than the diameter of body portion 38. The protuberance 39 extends through an opening 4() provided in the vertical part of the yoke-shaped element and the inner end of the protuberance 39 is upset as at 41 to tixedly secure the body portion 38 to the yokeshaped element and to prevent the rotation of suoli body portion.
Extending from the outer face of the body portion 38 is a stub-shaft 42 having revolubly mounted thereon a sleeve 43 having a tapered outer end 44. The sleeve 43 is adapted to extend in a channeled rail and slidable within the latter. The tapered outer end of the sleeve 43 prevents any binding action between the walls of the channel and the sleeve so that the revolving movement of sleeve 43 will not be retarded when the coupling element is sliding in the channellcd rail oi. the seat back. Y
The body portion 38 spaces the inner end ol the sleeve 43 from the vertical part 4U olf the volte-shaped element.
lhat I claim is:
A seat frame comprising a yoke-shaped element having a vertical part and ashorizontal part extending inwardly from the bottom of said vertical part, and a closure member having a vertical part and a horizontal part extending inwardly from the bottom of the latter, said member having its horizontal part of less length than its vertical part and with the latter projecting from the ends ot the former, the horizontal part of said mcmber positioned between and secured to opposed portions ofthe horizontal part of said element, the vertical part ot said memberrpow sitioned against and secured to the ends ol said element, said horizontal parts providing a support for a seat member and said. vertical parts encompassing and protecting tho edges of said seat member7 the vertical part of said closure member having forwardly extending end portions positioned against the outer face of the side portions of said element at the inner end of the latter.
In testimony whereof. I aix my signature hereto.
JOSEPH J. SCHMIIT.
