ELECTRI C TIME RELAY Filed Dec. 27. 1927 e o l p f l i a t n t r h d k 9 Fig.2
d ffoec 16/ Patented Apr. 21, 1931 JOSEF STOECKLIN, OF ZURICH, SHETZll-B-LAND. ASSTGIPJIUB, 1-:KTIIlNG-ESELLSCHAFT BROWN, BOVERI AND CIFL,
OF BADEN, SVI'ITZERLAND ELECTRIC TIME RELAY Application filed December 27, 1927, Serial No. 242,882, and in Germany December 30, 1926.
Electric relays are frequently equipped wlth retarding devices which delay the time of closure and such retarding mechanism is usually interposed between the driving and.
driving and the driven system of the relay.
is effected in such a manner that the work re quired for connecting and disconnecting the coupling is provided exclusively by the driving system, while the electric means feedingthe relay has only to perform the tripping work.
The coupling may consist for instance of a motor driven wheel which drives at least one other wheel iournalled in a rocking member coaxial with the said Wheel, so that through the driving torque the rocking member is swung round and the wheel journalled in it is thereby caused to engage with or be disengaged from the other wheel. belonging to the driven system.
In the accompanying drawing a time relay mechanism of this kind is shown in elevation Fig. 1, and plan view Fig. 2.
The motor or driving force for the time mechanism is the spring a. on the shaft 1) on which is mounted the toothed wheel 0 and which is wound up in the direction indicated by the arrow. The shaft d of the second set of wheels 6. f is also journalled in the fixed frame 7 of the relay and supports the ratchet wheel h with which the detent 70, which is pressed against it by the spring a. engages, when the relay magnet i is not energized or not sufliciently energized. Between the two stops m and n the frame 0 rocks about the shaft d, in which frame two further shafts,
Above the wheel 9' is iour- The relav acts. when through the electromagnet i being suitably energ zed. the (letcnt 7c is disengzaged from the ratchet wheel It. The spring a will. then drive the train of wheels 0, e. f. 79. (7. 7" which is damped bv the air resistance of the vane wheel 1/. the lirec- .tion of rotation of the various shafts being indicated by arrows. On the lockina' means 70. 71 being released. the whole of the torque of the relay 1'' will in the first moment he used for accelerating the following wheels 70. (I. r, and the damping vane wheel it. thus acting at the same time on the rocking frame 0, causing the latter to lift from the top on and to brine: the wheel/ into engagement with the wheel w. These wheels remain in engagement until. through the magnetic circuit i being broken owing to contact being made at 1 or for some other reason. the detent 7c is again brought into ensra cement with the wheel h bringing the toothed wheel 7 to rest. Owing to its kinet c enersrv the wheel will continue to rotate and through the counter balance moment thus created moves the rocking member 0 out of engagement. so that the weight is free to descend and the relay is again ready for operation.
When the (lrimng mechanism is so constructed to be capable of being driven in both directions of rotation. it is possible to couple for each direction of rotation a sepa-= driven system instead of to the intermediate What I claim is:
1. A time relay mechanism comprising a motor disposed in a fixed frame, a plurality of gears in said frame driven by said motor, releasing and locking means for controlling the operation of said gears, a second frame oscillatable about said fixed frame, a plurality of gears disposed in said frame and adapted to be driven by the movement of the gears in the fixed frame, a gear wheel mounted in said fixed frame and adapted to be driven by one of the gear wheels of the oscillatable frame when the frame is moved from its normal position, upon the releasing of the driving motor, and means actuated by said gear for operating an electrical contact.
2. A time relay mechanism comprising a motor disposed in a fixed frame, a plurality of gears in said frame driven by said motor, releasing and locking means for controlling the operation of said gears, a second frame oscillatable about said fixed frame, a plurality of gears disposed in said frame and adapted to be driven by the movement of the gears in the fixed frame, a governor for controlling said gears, a gear wheel mounted in said fixed frame and adapted to be driven by one of the gear wheels of the oscillatable frame when the frame is moved from its normal position, upon the releasing of the driving motor, and means actuated by said gear for operating an electrical contact.
3. An electric time relay comprising a pair of contacts, a driving train of wheels actuated by an independent source of power, a tripping electromagnet controlling a detent for said driving train, a driven system of wheels which operates the said contacts after a predetermined time interval from the start of said driven system and an automatic coupling, energized by said source of power for connecting said driving and driven systems upon release of said detent, said coupling including a planet wheel mounted in a pivoted frame.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification.
