This invention relates to devices for maintaining the ditch and shoulder of roads in good condition, and the invention consists in the provision of a drag adapted to be pulled by a tractor, the drag being a suitable frame provided at one end with a suitable blade for scraping the shoulder of the ditch and at the same time scraping vegetation down into the bottom of the ditch, and a second blade which is drawn over the bottom of the ditch for scraping the ditch free of all such vegetation. I
A still further object of the invention is to provide a device of the character above mentioned which will work ditches wet or dry.
Other objects and advantages of the invention will become apparent during a study of the following description, taken inconnection with the accompanying drawings Figure 1 is a top plan view of our improved drag. i
Fig. 2 is a side elevational view thereof.
Fig. 3 is a transverse sectional view there,- through. v
Fig. 4 is a perspective view of one of the scraper blades.
With reference more in detail to the drawings, it will be seen that our improved drag comprises a substantially T-shaped frame including a pair of bars or beams 5 and 6 re spectively converging toward one end and suitably secured together at their converging ends. It will be noted that the beam 5 is of a length greater than the beam 6. At their converging ends, the beams 5 and 6 are braced with respect to one another through the medium of a suitable V-shaped brace 7, having the legs thereof bolted to the beams 5 and 6 as at 8.
Carried by the shorter beam 6 and extending substantially for the full length thereof at the outer face of the beam, is a scraper blade 9 bolted or otherwise secured to the beam 6 as at 10, adjacent the lower edge of the beam. The scraper blade 9 is for scraping the bottom of the ditch. h
For scraping the shoulder of the road,'we provide an inclined blade 11 bolted at its lower end to the beam 6 at the apex of the drag frame as at 12. The shoulder scraping blade 11 is braced withrespect to the beam 6 through the medium of a suitable brace rod 13, while the blade 11 is also braced wlth respect to the beam 5 through the medium of a suitable brace 14.
Inwardly from their diverging ends, the beams 5 and 6 are braced and maintained in spaced relation with respect to one another thru the medium of a sleeve 15 extending between the beams. An eye bolt 16 extends thru suitable openings provided therefor in the beams5 and 6, and through the sleeve 15, the eye 17 of the bolt extending laterallyof thebeam 6 while to the other end of the bolt is secured a suitable nut 18 hearing against a suitable washer on the outer face of the beam 5. v
The eye 17 of the eye bolt provides a hitch for the heel or rear end portion of the drag, the eye 17 being adapted to receive a chain extending from a tractor or any other suitable draft means as is apparent. At the forward or apex end of the frame is provided a second hitch and this second hitch comprises a short chain section 19 bolted or other wise secured at one end thereof to the beam 5, while the free end of the chain section is suitably secured to one end of an L-barQO, the free end of which L-bar 2O terminates in an eye 22 to facilitate the attachment of a draft (not shown) thereto.
Thus it will be seen thatthereis provided ineans for securing the drag at the heel and forward endthereof to a tractor'or any other suitable draft means.
Suitably bolted as at23 to the free end of the bar 5, is a longitudinally extending weight beam 24:. i
It is thought that fromthe' foregoing de- 0 scription, taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, a clear understanding of the operation, construction and advantages of a device of this character will be had by those skilled in the art without a more de tailed description.
Even though we have herein shown and described the preferred embodiment of our invention, it is to beunderstood that the same is susceptible of changes, fully comprehended by the spirit of the invention and the scope of the appended claims.
Having thus described our invention What we claim as new is 1. In a device of the character described, a substantially V-shaped drag frame comprising a pair of bars converging toward one end, hitch means for the drag frame adjacent the forward and end of the frame, a scraper blade secured to one of said bars at the lower edge of the bar, and extending for substantially the fuil length of said one bar, an inclined blade secured at one end to said one bar adjacent one end of the first-mentioned blade, said inclined blade extending upwardly and forwardly of said drag frame.
2. In a device of the character described, 1 substantially V-shaped drag frame comprisng a pair of bars converging toward one end, hitch means for the drag frame, a scraper blade secured to one of said bars, an inclined blade ,ecured at one end to said one bar adjacent one end of the first'mentioned blade, said inclined blade extending upwardly and forwardly of aid drag frame, brace rods secured to the second-mentioned blade and to the respective bars of said frame, and a weight bar secured to the other bar of said drag frame at the free end of said other bar.
In a drag device of the character described, a substantially V-shaped frame comprising a pair of bars of unequal length and converging toward one another at the forward end of the frame, a V-shaped brace arranged between the converging ends of said frame bars and secured to said ends of the frame bars, a blade secured to the shorter of said frame bars and extending longitudinally thereof, said blade being adapted to scrape the bottom of a ditch or the like, a forwardly and upwardly extending blade secured at its lower end to said shorter frame bar at the converging end of said frame bars, said last-mentioned blade adapted for scraping engagement with the shoulder of a road, brace means for the last-mentioned blade, a sleeve extending between said frame bars, an eye bolt extending through said sleeve and through openings provided therefor in the respective frame bars, the eye of said bolt providing a hitch for the drag frame, and a second hitch for the frame including flexible means secured to the longer of said frame bars at the converging ends of said frame bars,
In testimony whereof We afl'ix our signatures.
