Filed July 8, 1929 2 Sheets-Sheet 2 Patented Apr. 14, 1931 PATENT OFFICE WALTER EVERETT MOLINS AND ALBERT ALEXANDER STONE, OF LONDONQENGLAND CIGARETTE MACHINERY Application med July s, 1929, Serial No. 376,736, and in Great Britain August 2a, 1928.
a object the provision of such a device wherein the cutting 'bladefis always maintained at right angles tothe axis ofthe cigarette rod and is moved during the cutting operation in thefdirection ofthe axis of the cigarette rod without imparting a reciprocating moveanglestothe axis of the ment to any as the-parts of the cutting dev1ce.*
The present invention consists of a cutting device for severing an axially moving rod into lengths which comprises a shaft secured against axial displacement, a blade or blades operatively connected "to said shaft at a fixed point along the length of the same in such a manner, as to be revoluble about the axis of said'shaft in a plane, which includes the said fixed point and is inclined to a plane normal to the axis of the moving rod and means operable to maintain each blade normal-to the direction of the axis of the moving rod throughout the entire path of the blade. I u l Further, the present invention consists of a cuttingdevice for severing an axially moving rod into lengths which comprises a shaft secured against axial displacement. a blade or blades operatively connected to a disc or the. like carried by said shaft at a fixed point along the length of the same in such a manner that the plane of the disc or the'like is maintained during rotation at a constant angletdthe axis of the rod. and a plane nor- 'maltotheaxis"of therod, and means onerableto maintain the blade or blades at right rod during the cutting operation. q
,{Theinvention w;ill be more particularly described with reference to the accompanying'drawings, in;which: 1 a a a Fig- 1.,is a side elevation, partly in section, of one method of carrying the invention into effect. a a ,7 Fig.2 is an end elevation of Fig.- 1 looking in the direction of the arrow A, and
Fig. 3 is a sectional elevation of a modified form of the apparatus illustrated in Figs. 1 and 2.
Referring to Figs. 1 and 2, the apparatus comprises a disc 1 secured to a shaft 2 at a fixed point along the length of the same. The shaft 2 is carried in a bearing bracket 3, and is so mounted that the plane of the plate 1 is inclined to the axis of the cigarette 16.
Mounted co-axially with the discl is a fixed pinion 1 attached to the spindle hearing bracket and adapted to drive a second pinion 5 idly mounted upon the disc 1 and arranged to gear with athird pinion 6 carried upon a spindle 7 rotatably mounted near the outer edge of the disc 1. The spindle 7 is provided atthe free end thereof with an extension piece or head 8 arranged at an angle to the axis of the spindle 7. The head is in the form of a circular disc and a sleeve 9 is rotatably mounted thereon, but the sleeve 9 is held in a stationary position relatively to the disc 1 by means of a fork 10 extending at right angles from the surface of the disc 1 and engaging with an extension 11 on the sleeve 9 which carries the rol ler 12. The sleeve 9 has a cutting blade 13 mounted thereon, the blade being clamped bya plate 1 1. i
The knife 13 is of the usual sickle shape as shown inFig' 2, and a counter-weight 15 is mounted at the opposite end of thc'plate 1 to balance the apparatus, just described.
The inclination of the head 8 of the spindle 7 is such that the plane of the knife 13 is at right angles to the axis of the cigarette rod 16, and owingto the arrangement of gearing, previously described, the cutting edge of the knife always points in the same direction throughout the entire revolution of the disc 1. c
In addition to the above, the knife receives a lateral movement in the direction of the axis of the cigarette rod, and the angle of inclination of the spindle 2 is such that the speed of translation of the knife is equal to the axial speed of the cigarette rod.
Referring to the modified form illustrated in Fig. 3, the outer pinion 6 is replaced by a pinion 7, the spindle 18 of whichis large enough to form a bearing for a spindle 19 which carries a blade 20. The bearing for the spindle 19 is formed at an angle in the I spindle 18 of the pinion 17 and the angle is blade, previously described, and the circular blade is rotated by securing the knife car rier spindle to a pinion meshing with a large 7 fixed sun gear and dispensing with the eX- tension on the knife clamp, which in the case of the fixed blade, engages with a forked element mounted on the disc.- The spindle of the knife carrier is rotatable in anobliquely bored bush which is constructed and driven in the manner shown'in- Fig.1 3; p
From thea-bove description it will be observed that the cutting device which forms v the subject matter of thefpresent invention I comprises the principle disclosed in Fig; 7 of Us S. Patent No; 11,630,132,therlifierence bethat instead of a parallel link-mechanism being provided for maintaining the spindle which carries the cutting blade parallel: to the axis of the cigarette rod, thesaid spindle is arrangedto extend through the disc" and engage with ar b'eari'ng formed in agear mounted on the discv which maintains they said spindle'parallel to the axis of the cigarette rod. p a V 1 Thus itwill be s'eenthat according to the present invention the cutting 'blade'ismain- 'tained at right angles to the axis of the cigarette rod during-the rotation off'the same about'the axis of the plate,--.and at the'same timeiemoved in the direction of the axis-of the cigarette red at the axial speed of the rod during the cutting operation.
