D NIEL CALHOUN, 0 CHICAGO, ILLINoIs.
IMPROVEMENT lhl DEVICES FOR SUSPENDING CURTAINS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 180, [08, dated July 25, 1876; application filed May 20, 1876.
are suspended; and it consists chiefly in in-' closing the rods and the hooks depending therefrom, and supporting the drapery in tubes of metal, or other suitable material, provided with longitudinal slots upon the bottom, through which the drapery may fall.
This, as well as the other features of my invention, will be fully-understood from the following description and the accompanying drawing, making a part of this specification, and in which drawing- I Figure 1 is a front elevation of my improvement, and Figs. 2 and 3 are, respectively, transverse and vertical sections thereof.
Li'ke letters of reference made use of in the several figures indicate like parts wherever used.
Referring to said drawing, A represents a portion of drapery suspended from my improved device. B is a bracket adapted to be attached to the wall or other support, and
holding one end of a metal tube, Q, which is secured therein by a set-screw, s, as shown,
its other end being supported in like or some suitable manner. This tube C is slotted at the bottom, as more especially shown at c, in Fig. 2, throughout that portion of the same through which the drapery falls, such slot being of sufficient width to permit the easy entrance of the curtain, and to avoid cutting or tearing thereof when it is gathered or pushed to one side.
The curtain is attached to; and supported by S-shaped or otherwise shitably-formed hooks d, traveling upon a supporting-rod, I), which passes through the tube from end to end, and is supported centrally therein by disks E, placed one at each end of the tube, the rod passing through holes in the center of V the disks.
If the tube is a long one additional disks should be placed in the tube at points between the ends to prevent sagging of the rod D'. The disks also serve to keep the tube in form and to strengthen the same. The tube is provided at its ends with ornamental removable caps F, which slide over and inclose such ends, and are retained in place by the pressure of theset-screw s, as will be fully understood from the drawings-,
The rod D I'pref'er to make so long that its ends almost touch the inner sides-of the caps F, by which means it is prevented from sliding and getting out of its supportingdisk at either end; but it may, if desired, be secured in such disks themselves.
When it is necessary to suspend the drapery at right angles to the wall, instead of in a line therewith, the caps F and brackets B may be dispensed with, and the tube ends be inserted in suitable sockets in rosettes attached to the wall, as will be readily understood.
Among the advantages attending my improvement is thefact that the suspendinghooks and rod, and the top part of the curtain to which thchooks are attached, are out of sight, and, to a great extent, out of the dust; also, that thesupporting-rod, which has heretofore been exposed to view, maybe marred by the scratching of the hooks in sliding over it without detriment to the ap pearance of the device; also, the increased beauty of the device over those previously in use. I Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
l. The device for hanging drapery consisting of a tube, slotted at the bottom, and the 'rod and hooks from which the drapery is suspended, said hooks being supported by and sliding upon said rod, and both rod and hooks being inclosed within such tube, substantially as specified.
" 2. The combination of'the slotted tube G with the rod D and the disks E, the latter placed within the tube and supporting the rod, substantially as set forth.
'3. The combination of the rod D with the tube and its caps F, said rod being of such length that it will be prevented by said caps from sliding, substantially as set forth.
4. The combination of the tube 0 and cap F with the set-screw s and the bracket B, substantially as described.
