Thisinvention relates to improvements in looms and the object thereof is to provide mechanism for preventing thin places in the web of cloth which might be caused by failure of filling either through breakage of filling or exhaustion offilling upon the fill mg corner.
It has heretofore been customary to avoid the appearance. of thin places in the cloth caused by omission of one or more strands of filling, or by a broken strand of filling,
for the opera-torto rub the cloth from the center toward the selvage or selvages in such a manner as slightly to spread the filling strands, so that the thin place would not be clearly apparent. a ()ne of the objects of the present invention is to provide means for relieving the tension produced by the take-uproll upon the warps in such a manner that the resilience of the warps will draw the fell of the cloth slightly rearwardly upon occurrence of failure of filling, either bybreakage or exhaustion of filling upon the filling carrier, so that the 2 next filling which is laid by the shuttle will be beaten up more firmly than it otherwise would and the spaces produced by the failure of filling gradually. distributed along the web of cloth, thereby preventing any appearance :0 of a thin place.
A further object of the invention is to provide'means operable upon occurrence of failure of filling to move the tell of the cloth positively rearwardly a predetermined distance for the purpose above described.
A further object of the invention is to provide mechanism for accomplishingthis purpose which can be conveniently applied to common looms or to automatic filling replenishing looms.
A further object of the invention is to provide mechanism of the character above described which is automatically operable by usual mechanism, such as the filling fork mechanism which operates upon detection of failure of filling to effect achange in the operation of the loom, such as the stoppage of the loom, or the automatic transfer of a filling carrier.

provide mechanism operable by the beat up movement of the lay to permit or cause rearward movement of the fell of the cloth which mechanism is brought into operation upon initiation of the change in the operation of the loom.
These and other objects and features of the invention will more fully appear from the following description and the accompanying drawings and will be particularly pointed out in the claims.

A preferred embodiment of the invention is shown as embodied in a usual type of loom which may be either an ordinary loom or a filling replenishing type of loom.
Such a loom is shown as comprising side frames 1, a warp beam 2 j ournalled therein from which a sheet of warps 3 pass over a whip roll 4 which, as illustrated, is of special construction, thence through the lease fork mechanism calls for a rods 5 and harnesses 6, and over the takeup roll 7 and a small guide roll 8 to the cloth roll 9. The lay 10 is carried by the lay swords 11 which are pivotally carried by the lay rocker shaft 12 at the bottom of the loom. The crank shaft/13 and pitman 1 1 actuate the lay in-the usual manner and the loom is provided with the usual controller rock shaft 15 which, upon initiation of fill- 'ing replenishment, is rocked in a counterclockwise direction. f e 1 The mechanism herein described, except for the special form of the whip roll, may be and preferably is of the usual type.
The present invention contemplates: the provision of means located rearwardly of the take-up roll adapted to'be operated in such a manner as to release the tension upon the warps upon occurrence of failure of filling, either by breakage or exhaustion, to permit or cause the fell of the cloth to be drawn rearwardly a very short distance, so
that when the filling is beaten up, upon continuation ofthe operation of the loom, no
space will be left because of the missing pick or picks of filling which otherwise would occur if-a broken end of fillingwere drawn out the weaver, or if a delay of one or'more picks occurred during filling replenishment.
A preferred means of accomplishing this purpose comprises means,'located rearwardly of the take-up roll, movable transversely of the web of cloth, operable upon occurrence of failure of filling to slacken the tensionimposed'upon the warp, thereby permitting the resilience of the warps to draw the fell of the cloth rearwardly a short distance. Preferably, however, meansare provided in addition thereto for positively moving the fell of the cloth rearwardly a predetermined distance.
As illustrated in the accompanying drawings a guide roll 16 for the web of cloth, suitably journalled in the side frames, is located 1 roll.

so that the resilience of the warps may draw the fell of the cloth slightly rearwardly.

By virtue of this movement of the fell of after a broken end is removed, or after the pick of a shuttle containing an exhausted filling carrier, will be properly laid in the fell of the cloth. The frictional enga ement of the surface of the guide roll 16 y the cloth will,upon continuation of the weaving operation, gradually rotate the guide roll in a counter-clockwise direction, thereby bringing the eccentric surface of the guide roll in a position to support the web of the cloth in the manner above described.
Any suitable means may be provided for actuating the guide roll and for limiting its movement. As illustrated in the drawings the guide'roll 16 has secured to it an arm 19 which, when the guide roll is in normal position with the eccentric segment thereof supporting the warp, engages a suitable stop,-

This is accomplished in the present embodiment of the invention by providing the whip roll 4 with a radial enlargement or eccentric segmental section 32 similar to that of the guideroll 16, and by roviding the whip roll 32 with an arm 33 w ich is suitably connected to the arm 19 of the guide roll as by a link or bar 84. During the normal weaving operation the warps 3 pass from the war whip roll, the segmental section 32 being beneath the plane of the warps leading from the cylindrical section to the eccentric segment 17 of the guide roll 16. lVhen, therefore, the guide roll 16 is rotated in a clock wise direction, which is opposite to the direction of movement of the warps during the weaving operation, by engagement of the plate 23 upon the sword "with the hooked plate 27, the whip roll 4 will be rotated similarly in a clockwise direction causing the cccentric segmental section or radial enlargement 32 thereof to engage the warps, as illustrated in Fig. 3, and draw them rearwardly, in a direction opposite to the direction of their movement during the weaving operation, a predetermined distance, thus taking up the slack in the cloth which is produced by the rotation of the eccentric segment 17 of the whip roll out of engagement with the cloth,
so that the fell of cloth will be positively drawn rearwardly a desired predetermined distance.
Inasmuch as the controller rock shaftis but momentarily operated to initiate a change in the operation of the loom, the actuating rod 21 will immediately drop to its lowered position after the counterclockwise rotation of the guide roll and whip roll have been accomplished. Upon continuation of the weaving operation the engagement of the web of cloth with the surface of the whip roll and with the surface of the guide roll 17 will gradually rotate these rolls in a counterclockwise direction and restore them to their position of normal operation, illustrated in Fig. 2, and consequently gradually permit the fell of cloth to assume its normal position after the temporary rearward movement thereof has accomplished its purpose.
Where the invention is applied to a color loom in which thecontroller rock shaft 15 is actuated to initiate transfer, upon detection of substantial exhaustion of filling by the feeler, the arm 30, which raises the actuating rod 21, may be, and desirably is, secured to a sleeve shaft 36 which is rotatably mounted upon the controller rock shaft 15, and is actuated by the-filling fork mechanism upon detection of failure of filling in the manner above described. 1 a
This invention, therefore, is applicable either to looms in which a change in the operation of the loom, such as stoppage of the loom or filling replenishment, is initiated upon failure of fillingby the action of the filling fork, or to feeler looms in which transfer is initiated by the feeler mechanism.
It will be obvious that the mechanism for relieving the tension upon the loomsmay be alone operate-d topermit a rearward movement ofthe fell by merely omitting the connecting bar or link 34, in which case a usual P cylindrical whip roll may be employed, or if beam over the cylindrical portlon 35 of the a special whip roll having an eccentric seg ment is employed it may be rendered inoperative by disconnecting or removing the connecting link or rod 34 and providing suitable means to prevent clockwise rotation of the arm 33. i
It will thus be seen that the fell of the cloth may be caused to move slightly rearwardly bythe resilience of the warps upon 1 the slackening of the tension uponthe cloth produced by the take-up roll, or the fell of the cloth may be positively moved rearwardly a predetermined distance by the conjoint action of the guide roll and the whip roll as above described.
Having thus described the invention, What is claimed as new, and desired to be secured by Letters Patent, is:
1. A loom comprising a warp beam, a takeup roll, and means operable upon detection of failure of filling to efiect a change in the operation of the loom, means movable by frictional engagement of the web of cloth during the normal operation of the loom to increase the tension upon the warps, means operable by the means for effecting the change in the operation of the loom to slacken the tension thus imposed upon the warps, thereby permitting a limited rearward movement of the fell of the cloth and preventing the formation of a thin place upon continuation of the weaving operation.
2. A loom comprising a warp beam and a take-up roll, and means operableby a filling fork upon detection of failure of filling to effect a change in the operation of the loom, means movable transversely of the plane of the web of cloth by frictional engagement with the web of cloth during the forward movement thereof to increase the tension upon the warps, means operable upon initiation of'a change inthe operation of the loom ly to cause said eccentric segment normally to. support the Web of cloth, means for rotating said roll in the opposite direction upon failure of filling temporarily to slacken the tension imposed upon the warps by the takeup roll and to permit a limited rearward movement of the fell of the cloth thereby preventing the formation of a thin place upon continuation of the weaving operation. 7
. 4. A loom comprising a warp beam and a take-up roll, a rotatable roll having an eccentric segmental section extending longitudinally thereof, located rearwardly of. said 1 1 take-up roll, engaging the web of cloth, and
rotatable by the movement thereof sufficiently to cause said eccentric segment normally to support the web of cloth,'means operableby a filling fork, upon detection of failure of fill1ng,to effect a change in the operation of the loom, and means operable upon initiation of such change to rotate said roll in the opposite dlrection'temporarily to slacken the tension imposed upon the warps by the takeup roll and thereby prevent formation of a thin place uponcontinuation of the weaving operation.
5. A loom comprising a warp beam and a take-up roll, a rotatable rollhaving aneccentric segmental section extending longitudinally thereof, located rearwardly of said, take-up roll, engaging the web of cloth, and
rotatable by the movement thereof sufiiciently to cause said eccentric segment normally to support the web of cloth, a rod pivotally connected to said roll eccentrically thereof, a support for the free end of the rod, a rocking lay, co-operatin'g means on said rod and the lay normally disengaged, means operable by a filling fork to effect a change in the operation of the loom, and means actuated upon initiation of such change in the operation of the loom to effect engagement between said 'co-operating means and thereby cause the lay to shift therodand rotate said roll in a direction to relieve the tension upon the warp and permit the fell of the cloth to move rearwardly, thereby preventing the formation of a thin place in the cloth upon continuation ofthe weaving operation. I
6. A loom comprising a warp beam and a take-up roll, a rotatable roll having an eccentric segmental section extending longitudinally thereof, located rearwardly of said take-up roll, engaging the web of cloth, and rotatable by the movement thereof sufficiently to cause said eccentric segment normally to support the web of cloth, a rod pivotally conoperable by a filling fork to initiate a change in the operation of the loom, an arin rigid with said rotatable member yieldably connected to said rod and operable upon initiation of said change'in the operation of the loomto effect engagement of the co-operating means upon saidrod and said-lay to cause the lay to shift the rod and rotate the roll in .a direction to relieve the tension upon the warps and permit the fell of the cloth to move rearwardly, thereby preventing the formation of a thin place in the cloth-upon continuation of the weaving operation.
7 A loom comprising warp beam and a take-up roll, means operable by a filling fork upon detection of failure of filling to initiate a change in the operation of the loom, rotatable means located respectively in proximity to said warp beam and take-up roll frictionally engaging and supporting the warp and web of cloth, and operable by forward movement of the cloth to increase the tension upon the warps, and means operable upon initiation of said change in the operation of the loom to rotate said supporting means in a reverse direction to move the fell of the cloth positively rearwardly and thereafter to permit gradual restoration of said increased tension by the movement of the cloth upon continuation of the weaving operation.
8. A loom comprising a warp beam and a take-up roll, a rotatable guide roll having an eccentric segmental section extending longitudinally thereof located rearwardly of ,and in proximity to said take-up roll, a whip roll having an eccentric segmental section extending longitudinally thereof, said rolls engaging respectively the web of' cloth and the warp sheet and rotatable by the movementthereof during the weaving operation sufficient to cause the eccentricsegment of said guide roll normally to support the web of cloth and the segmental section of the whip roll to lie beneath the plane of the warp sheet, and means operable upon occurrence of failure of filling to rotate said guide roll and saidwhip roll in a direction opposite to the direction of movement of the warps, thereby positively moving the fell of the cloth rearwardly a predetermined distance to prevent formation of a thin place in the cloth upon continuation of the weaving operation.
9. A loom comprising a warp beam and a take-up roll, a* rotatable guide roll having an eccentric segmental sectionextending longitudinally thereof located rearwardly of and in proximity to said take-up roll, a whip roll having an eccentric segmental section extending longitudinally thereof, said rolls engaging respectively the web of cloth and the warp sheet and rotatable by the movement thereof during the weaving operation sufficient to cause the eccentric segment of said guide roll normally to support the web of cloth and the segmental section of the whip roll to lie beneath the plane of the warp sheet, arms rigidly connected to and extend ing from the respective rolls, a rod connecting said arms, and means operable upon occurrence of failure offilling to rotate said rolls simultaneously in a direction opposite to the direction of movement of the warps during the weaving operation temporarily to move the fell of the cloth rearwardly, thereby preventing the formation of a thin place in the cloth upon continuation of the weaving operation.
10. A loom comprising a warp beam and a take-uproll, a rotatable guide roll having an eccentric segmental section extending longitudinally thereof located rearwardly of and in proximity to said take-up roll, a whip roll having an eccentric segmental section extending longitudinally thereof, said rolls engaging respectively the web of cloth and the warp sheet and rotatable by the movement thereof during the weaving operation sufa the formation of a thin ficient to cause the eccentric segment of said guide roll normally to support the web of cloth and the segmental section of the whip roll to lie beneath the plane of the warp sheet, arms rigidly connected to and extending from the respective rolls, a rod connecting said arms, operable to rotate said rolls in unison, means including a controller rock shaft operable by a filling fork to effect a change in the operation of the loom, means connected to the arm of one of said rolls and to said controller rock shaft operable upon initiation of the change in the operation of the loom to cause said rolls to rotate in a direction opposite to the direction of movement of the warps during the filling operation and thereby temporarily to move the fell of the cloth rearwardly, thereby preventing place in the cloth upon continuation of the weaving operation.
