This invention relates to boiler cleaners and has particular reference to a boiler cleaner of the character in which a blower element is adapted to direct jets of cleaning fluid adjacent portions of the boiler to be cleaned.
One of the primary objects of this invention is to provide a novel means for controlling the flow of cleaning fluid to the blower element and to provide for a positive actuation of thismeans.
This application is a division of my copending application, Serial No. 714,513, filed May 19, 1924:.
Other objects and advantages of this invention, together with the numerous novel details of construction, will become more apparent as the following description proceeds, particularly when reference is had to the ac companying drawing wherein Figure 1 is a side elevational view of a boiler cleaner constructed in accordance with the teachings of this invention;
Figure 2 is a sectional elevational view of the structure shown in Figure 1 and Figure 3 is an edge view-of a portion ofthe structure shown in Figure 1.
Referring then particularly to the drawing wherein like reference characters designate coresponding parts throughout all views, there is disclosed in Figure 1 a blower element which is rotatable in a head designated generally by the reference character 11, the blower element being provided with nozzles (not shown) for discharging-jets of cleaning fluid adjacent portions of the boiler to be cleaned. The blower head includes a gooseneck 12 in which one end of the blower 'element is rotatably mounted, the other endof this gooseneck being provided with the valve casing 13 in which a valve 14 is mounted for controlling the flow of cleaning fluid through the ,gooseneck to the blower-element. The
vblower element is adapted to be rotated by suitable means which may, as illustrated, include the chain wheel 15, the pinion 16 and the gear 17 which meshes with the pinion. The valve is actuated upon rotation of the blower element by suitable means which includes the lever 18 and the cam 19 fixed to 1930. Serial No. 440,510.

One of the oppositely extending end portions 35 of the lever has an offset lug 36 provided with faces engageab'le with the cam for swinging the lever to open the valve This end portion has the'inclined end face 37 which, when the lever is in its normal inoperative position, is engageable with the inner edge of the end 29 of the cam and over which this edge rides upon clockwise rotation of-the blower element and cam. After the inner edge of the cam end has passed beyond the end of the lug 36, the inner face of the cam rides over the curved face 38 upon the end portion 35 holding the leverin adjusted position and thereby holding the valve open.
WVhen the end of the cam passes over the curved face 38, the transverse face 39 of the end portion rides over this end of'the cam, allowing the lever to gradually return toward its original position until theend 30 passes beyond this transverse face, after which the lever is allowed to return immediately to its original position.
For the purpose of positively returning the valve actuating lever and also closing the valve, the other oppositely extending end portion of the lever is provided with the offa set lug 41 having the lower face 12 which is engageablewith a suitable projection such as the pin 43 upon the gear wheel to thereby raise this end portion of the lever and return the same to its original position if it has not previously reached this position. Also, this end portion 40 of the lever is connected to the valve stem 44 by the link 45 to insure the positive closing of the valve. The
arrangement of parts is such that when the pin 43 is passing the end portion 35 of the lever, the latter is in its-inwardly adjusted position so that the pin does not contact with the same. 1
From the above it will be apparent that the invention provides means for eflecting an actuation of the cleaning fluid control valve upon rotation of the blower element. It will be noted that this means includes a lever which is connected to the valve stem together with a positive means for eirecting an actuation of this lever in both directions about its pivot. Thus the valve will be positively actuated to open and closed positioirduring rotation of the blower element. ,7
For the purpose or conveniently describing the invention, reference has been made throughoutthe specification to. the construction as a boiler cleaner adapted to clean parts of a boiler. that the invention may be incorporated in a cleaner for any typeof a heat exchange apparatus, and itis to he therefore understood that the terin boiler wherever used in the specification or claims is to be construed as meaning a heat transfer apparatus or fluid heater of any character, and the term boiler cleaner is to be construed as meaning a cleaner for any such apparatus.
While the invention has been described with considerable detail, it is to be understood that thevdescription is for the purpose of illustration only and is not definitive of the limits of the inventive idea. The right is therefore reserved to make such changes in the details of construction and arrangement of parts as will fall within the purview of the attached claims.
What I claim as my invention is:
1. In a boiler cleaner, the combination with a blower element, of a valve for controlling the admission of cleaning fluid thereto, a pivotal lever so associated with the valve that swinging movement of the lever effects an actuation of the valve, and means operable upon continuous movement of said blower element in one dlrection for positively swinging the-lever 1n opposlte directions.

In a boiler cleaner, the combination with a rotatable blower element, of a valve for controlling the admission of cleaning fluid thereto, a lever pivoted intermediate its ends and so arranged with respect to the valve as to actuate the same, means rotatable with said blower element and engageable with an end portion of said lever for swinging the same in one direction, and means also rotater element, a pivotal lever so associated with the valve as to actuate the same, a cam movable wlth the blower element and engageable It will be apparent,'however,
with said lever for moving the lever in one I direction about its pivot, and a pin movable with said blower element and engageable with said lever for moving the lever in the other direction about its pivot. a
4:. In a boiler cleaner, the combination of a rotatable blower element, a valve for cona movable blower element, a valve controlling theflow of cleaning fluid to the blower element, a lever connected'with the valve, and I members movablewith the blower element and arranged to successively engage the lever upon continuous movement of the blower ele-' ment in one direction'to move the valve to open and closed positions.
6. In a boiler cleaner, the combination of a rotatable blower element, a valve for controlling the flow of cleaning fluid to the blower element,'a lever connected to the valve for actuating the same, a cam rotatable with the blower element and engaging the lever to move the valve in one direction, and a pin rotatable with the blower element and en' gageable with the lever for moving the valve in the other direction.
7. In a boiler cleaner, the combination of a blower head, a rotatable blower element, a valve fixed against rotation with said blower 7 element for controlling'the flow of cleaning fluid to the blower element, and means for actuatingv said valve including a camrotatable with the blower element and a lever pivoted intermediate its ends on said head and connected to the said valve, said lever having an end portion engageable with the inner periphery of said cam for actuation by the same. 8. In a boiler cleaner, the combination of a rotatable blower element, a valve for controlling the flow of cleaning fluid to the I blower element, and means for actuating said valve, said means including a cam rotatable with the blower'element, a. lever pivoted intermediate its ends and connected to the valve, said lever having an end portion engageable with the inner periphery of said cam for actuation by the same, and a pin rotatable with said blower element and engaging said lever for moving the same in a direction opposite to the movement imparted to the lever by the cam.
9. In a boiler cleaner, the combination of a rotatable'blowcr element, a cam rotatable with the blower element, a pin rotatable with the blower element, a valve for controlling the flow of cleaning fluid to the blower ele- 7 ment, and a lever pivoted intermediate its ends and connected to said valve for actuating the same, said lever having an offset end portion engageable with the inner periphery of the cam for actuation by the same to eflect an opening of the valve, said ofiset end portion having an inclined face providing for a relatively slow initial closing of the valve, and said lever also having a'second offset end portion engageable with said pin for effecting an actuation of said lever to effect a positive closing of the valve.
10. In a boiler cleaner, a rotatable blower element, ahead in which said blower is journaled, a valve for controlling the flow of cleaning fluid to said blower element, and
means for actuating said valve upon rotation of said blower element, said means including a lever pivoted intermediate its ends to said head, a cam fixed for rotation with said blower element and engageable with said lever for moving the same in one direction about its pivot, and a pin rotatable with said blower element and engageable with the other end of said lever for moving said lever in the other direction about its pivot.
11. In a boiler cleaner, the combination of a rotatable blower element, a valve controlling the flow of cleaning fluid to the blower element, a lever connected to said valve for actuating the same, and members rotatable with said blower element and arranged to successively engage said lever upon continuous rotation of said blower element in the same direction to move the valve to open and closed positions.
