Description

Patented 17, 1933 HANS WEIGEL, OF ECKING, GERMANY ROLLING PROCESS Iil'o Drawing. Application filed February 24, 1930, Serial No. 481,049, and in Germany February 23, 1929.
My invention relates to improvements in rolling processes and more particularly in processes which are combined w1th a refini process. As now practised the process of r el ming wire, for example by chilhn the same by means of water, oil or the li e, is
erformed at the end of the rolling operatlon. he object of the improvements is to provide a. process which results in a material of 1mproved properties, and with this object in view my invention consists in performing the said refining operation in the course of the rolling operations, the refining operation being followed by one or more rolling operations. In the preferred form of the process I subject the material being rolled to a plurality of successive refining operations each followed by one or more rolling o erations, and in some cases I perform a chilhngso ration after each rolling operation. I ave found that the material treated by my improved process is materially refined, because the mechanical operation or operations following the chilling assist the formation of a sorbitic structure of the metal.
I The rolled metal is refined in the manner described for the purpose of rendering the same suitable for further treatment in a cold state, for example by drawing, and for other pur oses. Thus the metal is passed through a p urality of roll-trains after once chilling.
It will be seen from the foregoing that the process consists in rolling a steel wire to be wire-drawn. The steel wire is subjected to a plurality of rolling operations to cause a change in the sorbitic structure of the metal by quenching the steel wire immediately upon being rolled and then subjecting the quenched steel wire to another rolling operation immediately after the aforesaid quench ing. By this rolling and quenching there is a refinement in the composition of the steel to produce a sorbitic structure to adapt it to a subsequently cooled wire drawing process.
In some cases I subject the metal to a plurality of refining operations after one rolling operation and prior to a second rolling operation.
I claim:
In the process of rolling steel wire to be signature.
