Description

Jan. 10, 1933. c. A. ALBRECHT 1,894,143
TYPOGRAPHICAL COMPOSING AND LINE CASTING MACHINE Filed Jan. 9, 1932 As a matter of fact it is quite customary 111 cate sets of rollers which are pivoted in the Patented Jan. 10, 1933 i UNITED STATES ?ATENT OFFICE CHRISTIAN AUGUSTUS ALBRECHT, OF BERLIN, GERMANY, ASSIGNOR TO IVIERGEN- THALER LINOTYPE COMPANY, BROOKLYN, NEW YORK TYPOGRAPHICAL COMPGSING AND LINE-CASTING MACHINE Application filed January 9, 1932, Serial No. 585,669, and in Germany August 31, 1931.
This invention relates to typographical able so that they will not project beyond the composing and line-casting machines of the front edge of the keyboard when the latter known construction in which matrices are re- 1s 111 operative position. leased from a magazine by the depression The drawing illustrates one preferred con- 5 of keys which, together with certain of the struotional form of the invention, and in the members which transmit the movement onsaid drawing ward from the keys, are located in a key- Figure 1 is a side elevation, and board. In order to make this keyboard more Figure 2 a front elevation of the pertinent easily accessible, and more especially those parts of a matrix composing and line castparts thereof located at the back, it has almg machine. 5 5 ready been proposed to movably mount the The keyboard a 1s constructed in the cuskeybo-ard on pivots so as to permit itto be tomary manner. When a key is depressed, swung t f it Operative 1 1 It has the releas ng rod controlled thereby, is raised, also been proposed t mount the keyboard the releasing rods being divided in the usual on the machine frame so that it can be moved manner. fhe lower portion 70 of the re- ,69 rectilinearly in lateral or sidewise direction. eas ng rods, is mounted in a guide on the The object of the present invention i a keyboard tself and is movable with the keystill further development of the movable board, wh11st the upper portion k is guided k b I hi h i th k g ln a comb fwhich is rigidly connected to the board is movable in lateral direction, it has ac ne f ame m by means of two side brackbeen found, after the keyboard has been 6138 moved from its operative position, that the C r hng to the invention, the keyboard Space il bl t th b k f it, f i is movable 1n fore and aft direction from the or th ki f repairs i a foremost or inoperative position 1n which it tively small unless the lateral guides on shown 1 dotted lines in Figure 1 into the 7 which the keyboard is supported, are unreaoperative pos1t1on in which it i shown i sonably long, which arrangement is not g full lines in that figure, and yice versa. For erally practicable especially in cases wh re this purpose, the keyboard 1S mounted upon the accommodation is somewhat restricted. tWO S1616 rails u. These rails rest upon duplinarrow composing rooms to arrange the machine frame and serve to support the keymachines side by side as closely as possible. board with a capacity for being moved back- In the case however, of machines aligned in wards and forwards. In order to prevent the fore and aft direction, there usually exists keyboard from overbalancing when it is in a greater amount of space between them, as its foremost position, a further roller 1) is room has to be provided for the operators provided on each side of the keyboard on upseat and for access thereto, whilst the back wardly extending arms of the frame m, the of the machine must always remain accessisaid rollers bearing upon the upper surfaces b1 of the rails a. The rollers 0 and p are pro- 40 According to the present invention, the vided with flanges 0 9 to prevent the keykeyboard is moved rectilinearly in fore and board slipping ofi the rollers laterally, or, aft direction, that is to say, towards and away obviously, other means may be provided for from the operator. In order that the guides this purpose. Further, both the rails ncan for the keyboard shall not be in the way, it be rigidly connected together to form a is preferable for them to be movable or tiltframe-like structure, by means of a transtive position when not so required for supporting the keyboard. Rails slidable independently of the keyboard and movable in and out of the machine frame could also be used as guides.
The direction of movement of the keyboard need not necessarily be directly fore and aft, for, by arranging the supporting rails at the desired angle in the machine frame, the keyboard may be moved obliquely frontwise so as to obtain at the same time a little more space at the side. A saving in lateral space would also result in such a case because when the keyboard is moved obliquely towards the front and towards one side, the lateral movement need be only suflicient to enable free access to be had to all parts of the keyboard.
Having described my invention, I declare that what I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent is 1. Matrix composing and line casting machine in which the keyboard can be moved out of its operative position for the purpose of making it more accessible, characterised by the fact that the keyboard is mounted on the machine frame so as to be movable in fore and aft direction towards and away'from the operator.
2. Matrix composing and line casting machine according to claim 1, characterised by mutually engaging members on the keyboard and on the machine frame, which retain the former on the latter with a capacity for said former to be moved in fore and aft direction relatively to the latter.
. 3. In a keyboard controlled matrix composing and line casting machine, the combination with the keyboard, of rails fast thereto and extending in fore and aft direction, and rollers on the machine frame, supporting the rails with a capacity for said rails to be moved in the direction of their length.
4. In a keyboard-controlled matrix composing and line casting machine in which the keyboard is movable in fore and aft direction relatively to the machine frame, the combination with the keyboard, of rails fast thereto and extending in fore and aft direction, and rollers on the machine frame acting on the rails to prevent them and the keyboard from overbalancing when the keyboard is in its foremost position.
