Description

. SPEN CE GARMENT COVER Jan. 10, 1933.
iginal Filed May 25, 1928 gvwwntio;
(1H0: vw 14 Patented Jan. 10, 1933 PATENT OFFICE ROSE IZI. SPENCE, O33 BUFFALO, NEW YORK GARMENT COVER Application filed May 25, 1928, Serial This invention relates to garment covers of the kind which are intended to be placed upon garment hangers.
The main object of this invention is to provide a cover which, will effectively pro tect the upper portion of the garment against being soiled by settling dust or by handling.
A further object is to provide a cover which can be easily and securely attached to 19 a hanger and readily removed therefrom and which, when attached, will not interfere with the ready removal of a garment from the hanger or its replacement thereon.
A further object is to provide a cover which may be readily laundered.
A still further object is to provide a garment cover which will prevent the garment from touching the metal shank of the hook of the hanger and thereby avoid the danger of rust or dust spots from this source.
The invention consists generally of a cover which is composed of any suitable flexible material such as textile fabric and so fashioned that it may he slipped over the hook of the hanger so as to rest upon the bar and to extend both downwardly on either side of the bar and outwardly beyond the ends of the bar, the cover having means for securing it to the hanger.
An embodiment of the invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawing, where- Figure 1 is a side elevation of the cover as it appears when attached to the hanger, one end of the cover being upturned to more clearly show the construction.
Figure 2 is a top plan view oft-he cover and hanger, the ends of the cover being fastened together.
Figure 3 is a plan view of the cover as removed from the hanger and stretched out.
Figure 4 is a cross section along line 4 l of Fig. 1 showing the method of attaching or securing the cover to the hanger.
The hanger utilized in connection with the improved cover may be of any suitable type, the hanger shown comprising a curved bar or member 1 and a centrally located upright hook 2.
The cover, as shown, comprises a piece of No. 230,575. Renewed April 9, 1932.
fabric 3 having a centrally located aperture 4. which permits itto be slipped over the hook 2 so as to rest upon the member 1. The particular shape of the cover is not material except insofar as it should be of such shape as tb extend downwardly on either side of the member 1 for some suitable distance and preferably over the ends of said member.
he end portions of the cover are provided with fastening means such as snap fasteners 5, for the purpose of holding the end portions together thereby preventing the exposure of the ends or shoulders of the garment to settling dust and the like.
In order to permit the cover to be easily and securely attached to the hanger without in any way interfering "with the removal of a garment from the hanger or its replacement thereon a flexible strap 6 is provided, one end of which is permanently secured to the cover on one side of the aperture t and the otherend of which is adapted for removable securement to the cover on the opposite side of the aperture as by a snap fastener 7, the intermed ate portion of the strap being adapted to extend around the under side of the member 1. For the sake of appearance, the strap is shown as extending from one outer edge of the cover to the opposite outer edge thereof with the intermediate portion, of course, extending through the aperture and looped around the 'member'l. The strap is, of course, drawn taut whensecured by the fastener 7 It is apparent that this strap effectually covers the shank of the hook 2 and thereby prevents a garment, placed on the hanger, from coming into contact with said shank. In this manner, the danger of rust or dust spots from this source is completely avoided.
Now assuming the cover to be attached to the hanger, when it is desired to place a garment thereon, the ends of the cover are unfastened and the garment slipped over :the ends of the member 1 and under the cover. 95 The adjacent ends of the cover are then fastened together thereby completely covering the upper portion of the garment. I 'By so covering the upper portion of the garment, it is not only protected againstdust but also we against handling by users who invariably grasp the hanger at one side, at the same time taking hold of the garment. The cover, moreover, prevents the garment from slipping from the hanger.
The cover may be removed from the hanger by simply unfastening the snap fastener 7 and pulling it through the aperture 4 whereupon the shield can be easily slipped over the hook and free of the hanger.
I claim as my invention 1. As an article of manufacture, a garment cover comprising a piece of material having an aperture and adapted to be placed over the supporting bar of a garment hanger so as to hang over the sides of said bar, the hook of said hanger projecting through said aperture and a strap formed for insertion through said aperture, one end of said strap a being secured to the cover and the other end thereof being adapted for removable securement to the cover, the intermediate portion of said strap being of a length to extend through said aperture and around the under side of said supporting bar whereby when the strap is secured at both ends it functions to hold the cover securely on the bar.
2. As an article of manufacture, a garment cover comprising apiece of flexible material which is adapted to be placed over the sup porting bar of a garmenthanger so as to hang over both sides of said bar and to extend longitudinally beyond the ends thereof, and a flexible member one end of which is secured to said cover and the other end of which is adapted for detachable secnrement thereto, said flexible member being adapted to extend around the under side of the garment supporting bar as and for the purpose set forth.
3. As an article of manufacture, a garment cover comprising a piece of material having an aperture'and adapted to be placed over the supporting bar of a garment, hanger, the hook of said hanger projecting through said aperture and the material being of such form as to hang over both sides 'of said bar and to extend longitudinally beyond the ends thereof, and a flexible strap having one end secured to said cover and its other end adapted for securement thereto, the intermediate portion of said strap being adapted to extend through said aperture and around said supporting bar when secured at both ends whereby the cover is secured to said bar.
4. As an article of manufacture a garment cover comprising a piece of material fashioned to be placed over the supporting bar of a garment hanger so as to hang over the sides of said bar, said cover having an opening for the hook of the hanger and being provided with a strap connected to said piece of material at opposite sides of said opening one of the strap connections being detachable whereby the strap may be looped around the bar of the hanger to effect the securement of the cover to said bar or may be disengaged from said bar to permit the removal of the cover.
5. As an article of manufacture a garment cover comprising a piece of flexible material which is fashioned to be placed over the supporting bar of a garment hanger sons to hang over both sides of said bar and which has an opening for the hook of said hanger and a flexible member connected to said piece of material and of a length to provide a bight to project through the opening and encircle said bar, said flexible member including a detachable connection which provides for the disengagement of its bight from said bar and thereby permits the removal of the cover from the hanger.
In testimony whereof I hereby aflix my signature.
