CE'ARLES L. CUTLER, 0F SPRINGFIELD, IIIASSACI-IUSE'ETS GAME BOARD Application filed March 25, 1931.
This invention relates to game boards and has for its object the provision of boards of iis character having an increased utility and greater convenience in use than boards now generally used.
In the accompanying drawing which 1llustrates one embodiment of the invention:
1 is a pers iective view of the board open for play;
Fig. 2 is similar view showing the board closed;
Fig. 3 is a perspective view of the cover of ie storage compartment removed from the board; and i Fig. l is a fragmentary perspective view showing the storage comparment open.
Referring to the drawing, the board 18 show as composed of two sections 1 and 2 hinged together at 3 by strip of fabric or other suitable material. Each section is constructed in the form of a hollow box made of ca dboard, wood or the like. In the form illus ted, the inner playing surface 4 is provided with a conventional checker field as at 5 while the outer surface 6 is designed for backgammon as at 7, but it will be understood that the surfaces may be designed for any desired game, and. if desired the outer surface may carry merely a fancilul or conventional design or the title of the game.
The inner surface of the board is provided with openings 8, preferably rectangular in shape and p sitioned in one corner of the board. These openings are preferably provided with walls 9 forming a confined compartment 10 for the storage of the playing pieces 11. who closures 12 in the form of an open faced box, the sides and ends 13 of which are :u ap'ed to rest on the bot-tom of the comper inent and maintain the surface of the clos..re, which forms part of the playing surface, at the same height as the remainder of the board when the closure is in position. The closure is provided with a small hole 14 The openings 8 are provided Serial No. 525,148.
to permit insertion of the finger to facilitate removal of the closure. It will be understood that the closure fits with sufi'leient tight 7 ness to be frictionally held in place.
l Vhile two storage compartments are shown one only will in many cases be preferable as where the playing pieces are few or the device is designed for a single game.
By the construction described, the simulation of a solid board of substantial thickness 5 is secured, thereby enhancing the appearance. Furthermore, a smooth inner playing surface is obtained and the playing pieces are securely stored and are not subject to loss if the. board is opened in an inverted position. The box-like structure of the board permits the use of lighter and less expensive materials in constructing the board, at the same time increasing its strength.
lVhat I claim is:
1. A game board comprising two flat boxlike members closed on all sides and hinged together along one edge, at least one flat face being provided with a playing field, an open ing formed in the inner surface of at least one of said members, said opening being provided with walls connecting the inner and outer faces of the board to form a confined storage space, and a box-like closure telescoped within said opening.
2. A game board comprising two fiat boxlike members closed on all sides and hinged together along one edge, at least one flat face being provided with a playing field, an-opening formed in the inner surface of at least one of said members, said opening being provided with walls connecting the inner and outer faces of the board to form a confined storage space, and a closure for said opening having depending walls of a height to rest on the outer wall of the member to position the surface of the closure in the plane of the playing field.
3. A game board comprising two box-like members closed on all sides and hinged together along one edge, at least one flat face of the board being provided with a playing field, a storage compartment formed in at least one of said members, an opening in one face of the board communicating with said compartment and a separable closure frictionally engaged within said opening and flush with the face of the board, said closure being provided with a small aperture to facilitate the opening thereof.
In testimony whereof I have affixed my signature.
CHARLES L. CUTLER.
