This invention relates to cigarette package cases, orthe like, and provides improvements therein. w e The invention provides a device of the char- I acter described which holds and protects collapsible packages, holds the packages extended within the case, admits of convenient access to the contents of the package, and per-' mits of easy or convenient introduction and removal of the package into and from the case in its intended manner.
The invention further provides a device of simple construction, fulfilling in a very complete and satisfactory manner the requirements of its use. It further provides a device of attractive appearance.
Several embodiments of the invention are illustrated in the accompanying drawings, wherein Figure 1 is a perspective view of one embodiment with its cover open, and empty.
Fig. 2 is a similar view of said embodiment showing the package extending means in position for insertion into the pacakge preliminary to introduction into the case.
Fig. 3 is a perspective view of the package extending means, detached.
Fig. 4 is a perspective view of the foregoing embodiment with its cover open and containing a package of cigarettes.
Fig. 5 is a top plan view of said embodiment, with the cover open.
Fig. 6 is a cross-section on line 66, Fig. 4 on an enlarged scale.
Fig. 7 is a perspective view of a second embodiment.
Fig. 8 is a transverse cross-section of the embodiment shown in Fig. 7
Referring to said drawings, numeral 10 4 designates the case as a whole, and 11 a cigarette package of usual construction, as for example, a paper and tin-foil wrapper folded at the top and bottom around a bunch of cigarettes, such a package being easily collapsible especially when several cigarettes are removed from the package.
The case comprises a body portion 13 of approximately the dimensions and shape of package 11. The sides 15, 16 (Figs. 5 and 6) are preferably slightly concave on their innersides, as shown, into which concave portions the sides of the package may extend. The top of the body portion 18 is provided with an opening 18 for extraction of cigarettes through a corresponding opening in the top of the package 11 conveniently formed prior" to introduction of the package, the opening 18, preferably being coextensive with the topof the body-portion. V Means 20 are provided for extending into the interior of package 11,'and to thereby hold said package in extended position within said body-portion.
The means 20 are preferably movable to and from a position within the body-portion 13, by which arrangement the introduction of he said. means'into the package is facilitated. The means 20 may be connected to the body I portion '13, as shown in Figs. 7 and 8, in a manner to be movable to a position within and tea position outside of the body-portion as. heretofore described. 01', as shown" in Figs. 16, the means 20 may be detach'ably connected tothe body-portion as hereinafter described. 5 The connection may be, and preferably is, as shown, a pivoted connection 22, andione of the sides of the body-portion 13, as the side 28, is open in'such manner as to permit the means 20 to be swun from a position within the body-portion Fig. 1) to a position without the body-portion (Fig. 2) and back again. J
One or more of the sides of the body-portion 11 may be partially cut out, as indicated at 26, to reduce weight or for any other desired purpose. I j r V *The package extending means 20 preferably comprises a pair of legs 28, adapted to enter the package 11 along inner opposite sides. The legs are preferably resilient and arranged to press the sides of the package 11 against the contiguous sides of the bodyportion 13 and thereby hold the package in the body-portion. The legs 28 may be and preferably are formed of strip material (wire), and'may be joined to a cross-piece 30, constituting together a frame. Parts 33, 34: of each leg may extend over the package and fit into sockets or holes 36 in the bodyportion, Figs. 1-6 and 7 and 8; Strips 38 (Figs. 1-6) may be provided on the inner face of the sides of the body-portion 13 in which the holes or sockets 36 may be provided for receiving the pivotal parts 33, 34 of the frame or means 20, and thereby preserve the appearance of the sides by avoiding perforations therein. The pivot- a1 parts 33, 34 may be made, as shown, of a diameter to pass into and out of the sockets or holes 36 and by this arrangement, the frame 20 may be readily detached from and attached to the body-portion, by flexing the frame so that said pivotal parts 33, 34 may enter and leave said sockets 36. The frame 20 may be removed in this manner and inserted into a cigarette package and then replaced in the case.
The case may be and preferably is provided with a cover 40, which may, as shown, extend over the entire top of the body-portion 13. The cover 40 may be and preferably is a hinged or pivoted cover. A suitable spring may be provided for normally pressing the cover to open position (or even vice-versa).
Locking means may be provided for holding the cover 40 in closed position. The locking means preferably comprise hooks or flanges 42 on the cover adapted to hook over the cross-piece 80 of the frame 20, the said frame, or cross-piece itself, being resilient to admit of the hooks 42 passing over the cr0sspiece in opening and closing. To facilitate opening the cover, the cross-piece 30 may be provided with a push-button 44.
As shown in Figs. 1-6, the cover 40 may be connected to the body-portion 13. Or, as shown in Figs. 7 and 8, the cover 40 may be connected to both the body-portion l3 and to the frame 20, the ends 33, 34 of the frame 20 being formed as shown, so as to constitute a hinge-pin between the cover 40 and the body-portion 13.
The operation of the device will be apparent from the description of the several embodiments.
The invention may receive other embodiments than those herein specifically illustrated and described.
What is claimed is 1. A cigarette package case, comprising a body-portion adapted to receive a cigarette package, means adapted to extend into and engage said package on at least two opposite sides and to thereby hold said package extended within said body-portion, a pivoted connection between said latter means and said case, and an opening in said body-portion through which said pivoted means may be swung to a position within and to a position outside of said body portion.
2. A cigarette package case, comprising a body-portion adapted to receive a cigarette package, a frame having a pair of opposite legs adapted to extend into said package and to thereby hold said package extended within said body-portion, and a cover pivoted to said body-portion, said frame having a portion forming a hinge-pin between said cover and body-portion.
3. A cigarette package case, comprising a body-portion adapted to receive a cigarette package, a frame having a pair of opposite legs adapted to extend into said package and to thereby hold said package extended within said body-portion, an opening in said bodyportion through which said frame may be moved to a position within and to a position outside of said body-portion, and a cover pivoted to said body-portion, said frame having a portion forming a hinge-pin between said cover and body-portion.
In witness whereof, I have hereunto signed my name.
JOSEPH P. MGENERY.
