My invention relates to an improvement in a bedpan washer and the novelty consists in the adaptation and arrangement of parts as will be more fully hereinafter pointed out.
My invention is an improvement of United States Patent No. 1,807,63 l of June 2, 1931 on application Serial No. 397,845 of Joseph H. Okun on a bedpan washer and which application was duly assigned to Kny-Scheerer Corporation, the assignee of the application herein.
There is a serious problem in bedpan washers in preventing the opening of the door of the bedpan washer while the sprayer common to said washers is in operation.
My device solves this problem completely by preventing the opening of the door of the bedpan washer so long as the water is running from the valve which controls the supply of water to the bedpan washer, said locking means being automatically withdrawn by the shutting off of the water.
Hy device also furnishes a means for turning on the valve controlling the flow of water to the bedpan washer by the operation of the closing of the door and delaying the return of the valve operating means to the inoperative position slowly so as to insure the operation of said valve each time that the door is opened and closed, whereby perfect flushing of the bedpan washer is positively secured.

In the drawings 70 is a bedpan washer of the general construction shown in the said Okun Patent No. 1.807553% of June 2, 1931 on application Serial No. 397 ,845 having a door 8 hinged on each side of the lower edge at 9 and each of said hinges having a tension spring 10 of usual construction secured thereto. A bracket 11 is rigidly secured to the door 8 at one end and terminates at its outer end in a round shoulder 12 over which fork 13 is secured in the usual manner by means of rivet 1 so as to turn regularly thereon. Fork 13 is integral with the upper end of rod 15 over which a beveled guide nut 16 is internally threaded so as to engage a threaded portion 17 of the rod 15. A cylindrical bracket member 18 is mounted over the rod 15 and adapted to be rigidly secured in the desired position thereon by means of set screws 19 and said bracket 18 through fin member 20 has integrally secured thereto a dash pot body member 21 of usual construotion, which has the usual head portion 22 and a dash pot rod 23 mounted therethrough with the usual dash pot cap 23a. On the upper end of the dash pot rod 23 is rigidly secured at 24 a bracket 25 having a top plate 26 terminating at one end in a fork 27 adapted to fit around the rod 15 so as to permit it to slide up and down as a guide on said rod 15. The opposite end of the plate 26 is a fiat stop member 28 and a segmental cup member 29 is rigidly mounted near the center of the top of the plate 26. A forked bracket 30 is rigidly secured at 31 to the dash pot body 21 and a retaining member 32 is pivotally mounted in the forked member 30 by means of pin 33 under continuous pressure of tension spring 34 mounted between said retaining member 32 and the dash pot body member 21 so as to keep said retaining mem ber 32 in the out position. Said retaining member 32 has a hooked portion 35 at its up er end.

A second forked member 39 rigidly secured between the forked members 37 to the under side of the foot pedal 38 has pivotally moLmted t-herein at 40 a circular shoulder member 41 integral with the lower end of the rod 15.
A casting 42 is secured to the body 70 of the bed'pan washer by means of bolts 43 and said casting 42 has a flushing valve 44 of usual well known construction secured thereto by means of threaded pipe connection '45 and said flushing valve 44 is connected by means of pipe 46 to a. source of water supply. A second valve 4? adapted to furnish hot water is also secured to the casting 42 by means of threaded pipe connection 48 and said Valve has a spring return operating faucet or handle 49 of well known construction which controls the operation of the hot water valve 47.
Projecting from the flushing valve 44 is a nipple 50 in which is mounted an operative valve handle 51 on the usual ball and socket construction 52 whereby the valve handle 51 will in the usual manner return to the central operative position through spring tension when released from the operative position to which it may have been pushed.
A body member 53 is rigidly secured by means of screws 54 to the casting 42 being internally threaded at its outer end at 55 and into which a head 56 having external threading 57 is adapted to be screwed. A metal bellows or compression member 58 preferably of phosphorus bronze is adapted to be mounted in said head 56 between plate 59 and the threaded portion 57 of the head 56 and a rod or pin 60 having a conical point 61 is adapted to be mounted inside of said bellows 58, passing through plate 59 and through a central boring through the head 56 and a nut 63 adapted to engage the inside end of the pin 60 holds it in position through the plate 59. A compression spring 64 is mounted inside of the bellows 58 so as to insure the return of the bellows 58 to the full open position after each compressing operation and pressing against the inside of the plate 59 at one end and against the inside of the head 56 at the other end, and the plate 59 is held against being pressed too far inwardly by contact with a rim 65 on the inside of the body 53.
The body 53 has a rectangular portion 66 integral therewith and to which is adapted to be secured at 67 a bayonet shaped stop member 68.
The operation of my device is as follows:
The door 8 of the bedpan Washer 70 will be opened by stepping on the foot pedal 38 which, through the forked members 37 pivoted at 36, will draw down on the rod 15 through connections 39, 40 and 41, whereby the bracket member 18 and dash pot body 21 will be pulled down from the position as shown in Figure 1 to the position as shown in Figure 3 and the dash pot rod 23 will be extend-ed to the position shown in Figure 3 as the end 28 of the plate 26 contacts with stop member 68.
When the bedpan has been placed in the bedpan washer 70 in the usual manner and the door 8 has then been lifted to a position past the center so that through the assistance of springs 10 it will close to the fully closed position, the rod 15, through the lifting of the bracket 11 through the connections 12 and 13 and 14, will be brought up to its normal position as shown in Figure 1 and the cylindrical bracket 18 and the dash pot 21 will be raised with the rod 15 to the position shown in Figure 1 and the dash pot rod 23 and the head 25 carrying 29, will be lifted so as to contact with 51 and lift it to the valve opening position shown in Figure 2. As the dash pot rod 23, head 25 and segmental cup member 29 are held in this upper position as shown in Figure 2 because of the slow return of the dash pot in the dash pot body 21 downwardly to its seating position, the operative valve handle 51 will be held in the operative position, while the rod and the described connecting parts are slowly moving downwardly, so as to insure a positive operation of the flushing valve 44 and preventing the return of 1 to its normal position until such flushing operation has been absolutely insured.
As the water goes from the flushing valve 44 through the connection 45 into the interior of the casting 42, it immediately contacts with plate 59 thereby compressing the bellows 58 against the spring 64 and causing the rod 60 and the tapered point 61' to project under the hook 35 of the retaining member 32, thereby posi ively locking plunger 21, cylindrical bracket 18 and rod 15 against being moved downwardly and thereby holding the door 8 in the fixed closed position through the connections 12, 13 and 14 with bracket 11. As soon as the flushing of the valve 44 is completed the pressure of the water on plate 59 ceases and the bellows 58 will be returned to their normal extended position, this being made positive by means of compression spring 64 which also prevents the bellows from being compresed too far and will return to its normal extended position, and the pin 60 and the tapered point 61 will thereby be withdrawn from the extended position to their normal encased position, that is, from the dotted outline position as shown in Figure 4, to the full body outlined position. This will release the hook of the retainingmember 32 so that the opening of the door and the complete cycle of operations as already described, can be again started.
Whenever it is desired to sterilize the bedpan washer 70, water of suflicient heat may be admitted by the operation of the hand faucet 49 of valve 47 or steam may be admitted through this same valve.
It will be observed that if the retaining member 32 is not in exact position when the pin is pushed outwardly through the operation of the water pressure from flushing valve 44: on plate 59, tapered point 61 will be adapted to ride under the hook 35 and lifting the same against the spring ea will ride thereunder to the full locking position under hook 35 as the pin 60 pushes out to the full extended position through the pressure of the water from flushing of valve 44 on the plate 59. Also, if the water from the flushing valve 4d has started its flushing operation as described prior to the locking positioning of the retaining member 32 and hook 35, the hook 35 will ride up under the tapered end 61 of pin 60 so that the retaining member 82 will be pressed back on the spring 34 whereby the hook 35 will on attaining the proper position, be pressed back into locking engagement over the pin 60.
I claim:
1. In a bedpan washer foot operated means for opening the door, water supply means, means to open the water supply means for feeding a measured supply of water to the bedpan washer, means to hold open the means controlling said water supply a sufficient time to insure its positive operation and an automatic locking means to prevent the opening of said door while said water supply is being fed to said bedpan washer.
2. In a bedpan washer a door having tension springs mounted at its h nges, foot operated means for opening said door comprising a bracket rigidly mount-ed on said door, a. rod pivotally mounted at its upper end to the outer end of said bracket and pivotally mounted at its lower end on a forked bracket pivotally mounted on the foot of said bedpan washer and carrying a foot pedal at its outer end, water supply means, means for opening the water supply means to feed a measured supply of water to the bedpan washer consisting of a self centering flushing valve having a handle and a lifting means carried on said foot operated rod adapted to lift said Y valve handle to operative position, means for holding said valve handle in operative position for a predetermined period of time to positively insure its operation comprising a dash pot carried by said foot operated rod and said lifting means being mounted on the upper end of the plunger rod of said dash 3. In a bedpan washer a door having tension springs mounted at its hinges, foot operated means for opening said door comprising a bracket rigidly mounted on said door, a rod pivotally mounted at its upper end to the outer end of said bracket and pivotally mounted at its lower end on a forked bracket pivotally mounted on the foot of said bedpan washer and carrying a foot pedal at its outer end, water supply means, means for opening the water supply means to feed a measured supply of water to the bedpan washer consisting of a self centering flushing valve having a handle and a lifting means carried on said foot operated rod adapted to lift said valve handle to operative position, means for holding said valve handle in operative position for a predetermined period of time to positively insure its operation compris ng a dash pot carried by said foot operated rod and said lifting means being mounted on the upper end of the plunger rod of said dash pot and an automatic locking means to prevent the opening of said door while said water supply is being fed to said bedpan washer.

In a bedpan washer a hinged door, foot operated means for opening said door comprising a bracket rigidly mount-ed on said door, a rod pivotally mounted at its upper end to the outer end of said bracket and pivotally mounted at its lower end on a forked bracket pivotally mounted on the foot of said bedpan washer and carrying a foot pedal at its outer end, water supply means, means for opening the water supply means to feed a measured supply of water to the bedpan washer, means to positively insure the operation of the water opening means and an automatic locking means to prevent the opening of sa d door while said water supply is being fed to said bedpan washer, comprising a body member connected directly to the water supply means and embodying a head adapted to thread into said body member and carrying a pin tapered at its outer end and adapted to pass in and out through said head, said pin having a pressure plate rigidly secured to its inner end, a compression member mounted over said pin between said head and plate, a compression spring mounted over said pin within said compression member and operated by the water from the water supply means acting on said pressure plate before entering the bedpan washer and a detaining member carried on said foot operated rod and adapted to hook over said locking pin in its outer position.

In a bedpan washer a door hinged at its lower edge, foot operated means for opening the same, water supply means, means operated by the closing of said door to open the water supply means, means to positively insure feeding a measured supply of water to the bedpan washer and an automatic locking means coacting with said foot operating means whereby the opening of said door is prevented While said Water supply is being fed to saidbedpan washer.

In a bedpan washer a door, operated by a foot pedal and rod, Water supply means, means to open the water supply means for feeding a measured supply of water to the bedpan washer comprising a flushing valve and an automatic locking means adapted to prevent the opening of said (1001' while said water supply is being fed to said bedpan washer comprising a body connected to the water supply means and containing a head adapted to screw into said body and carrying a pin mounted therein and adapted to slide therethrough, said pin being tapered at its outer end and having a pressure plate rigidly secured to its inner end, a compression member mounted over said pin between said head and plate, a compression spring mounted over said pin within said compression member and said locking means being 0 aerated by the pressure on said pressure plate of the Water flowing from the flushing valve to the bedpan washer and a detaining member mounted on the foot pedal rod and moving with said door and adapted to engage said pin in its extended position.

A bedpan washer comprising a door having tension springs mounted at its hinges, a bracket rigidly mounted on said door, a rod pivotally mounted at its upper end to the outer end of said bracket and pivotally mounted at its lower end on a forked bracket pivotally mounted on the foot of said bedpan washer and carrying a foot pedal at its outer end, a flushing valve connected to said washor near its head and having a self centering valve handle, a dash pot carried by said foot operated rod and a lifting plate carried on the upper end of the plunger rod of said dash pot to lift said valve handle to operative position and retard its return to closed position.

A bedpan washer comprising a hinged door, a bracket rigidly mounted on said door, a rod pivotally mounted at its upper end to the outer end of said bracket and pivotally mounted at its lower end on a forked bracket pivotally mounted on the foot of said bedpan Washer and carrying a foot pedal at its outer end, a flushing valve connected to said washer near its head and having a self centering valve handle, a dash pot carried by said foot operated rod, a lifting plate carried 011 the upper end of the plunger rod of said dash pot and automatic means for locking said door during the operation of said flushing valve.

A bedpan washer comprising a hinged door, a bracket rigidly mounted on said door, a rod pivotally mounted at its upper end to the outer end of said bracket and pivotally mounted at its lower end on a forked bracket pivotally mounted on the foot of said bedpan washer and carrying a foot pedal at its outer end, a flushing valve connected to said washer near its head and having a self centering valve handle, a dash pot carried by said foot operated rod, a lifting plate carried on the upper end of the plunger rod of said dash pot to lift said valve handle to operative position and retard its return to closed position and automatic means for locking said door during the operation of said flushing valve comprising a body connected to the water supply means and containing a head adapted to screw into said body and carrying a pin mounted therein and adapted to slide there through, said pin being tapered at its outer end and having a pressure plate rigidly secured to its inner end, a compression member mounted over said pin between said head and plate, a compression spring mounted over said pin Within said compression member whereby the water from the flushing valve acts on said pressure plate before entering the bedpan washer to push out said locking pin to its extended position and a detaining member carried on said dash pot adapted to hook over said pin.
10. in a bedpan washer, a door, a foot operated pedal connected by a rod thereto, an automatic lock to prevent the opening of said door it iie water is being fed to said washer comprising a reciprocating locking pin mounted in a body and within a compression member and 001111 ression spring and carrying a pressure plate on its inner end in said body and being connected to the water connection to said washer and said pin being operated by the pressure of the water flowing to said washer on said pressure plate, and a detaining member mounted on said pedal connection rod moving with said door and adapted to engage said pin in its extended position.
