Definitions
- This invention relates to trimming machines vand is illustrated as embodied in a machine for trimming heel-breast coverings.
- Trimming a heel-breast-covering flap by using the seam between the top lift and the heel as a gageline for determining the length to which the flap is to be trimmed is apt to result in a short heel-breast-covering flap in the finished shoe since the flap, which is sometimes in a tempered condition when trimmed, is liable to pull away from the top lift as it dries, due to the shrinkage of the flap,- and to leave a portion of the breast of the heel adjacent to the top lift uncovered.
- An alternative method of covering the breasts of wooden Louisheels is to trim the end portion of the heel -breast-covering flap so that the end portion of the flap after being trimmed extends sufficiently beyond I trimmed flap is to be substantially longer than the length of the heel breast, it is impracticable to trim the end portion of the flap while the flap is against the heel breast due to the lack of any satisfactory support for the end portion of the flap against the pressure of the trimming knife.
- an object of the present invention is toprovide an effective and reliable machine for expeditiously trimming the end portion of a heel-breast-covering flap by the use of which such a flap may be so trimmed that its end will be eithersubstanti-ally flush with the top-lift-receivingv face of the heel or so that the flap will be long enough to be tucked in between'the face and the top lift withoutencountering the above-stated disadvantages whichever way theflap is trimmed.
- the illustrated machine is provided with awork rest for receiving a shoe having a heel to which is secured a cover or a heel breast flap extending beyond an edge of the heel, and a rotary cutter, the Work rest and the cutter being mounted for relative movement and the work rest comprising a member which supports the [cover or flap and cooperates with thecutter in trimming a portionof the cover or flap extending beyond the edge of the heel uponthe relative movement of the work restand the cutter.
- the illustrated machine is provided with a member which separates the heel and the portion of the cover adjacent to a top-lift-receiving faceof the heel, the cover passing between "the rotary cutter and the member, which comprises a shear edge constructed and arranged to co-operate with the V cutter for trimming the cover as the shoeis moved past the rotary cutter.
- a further feature of the present lnvention consists in novel means for varying the amount of cover or heel-breast-covering flap left extending beyond an edge of the heel after the trimming operation has been performed.
- the illustrated machine is constructed and arranged to provide for adjusting the heel rest relatively to the rotary cutter in a direction generally heightwise of the heel positioned upon the rest.
- the shearing member and the work rest may be positioned relatively to the cutter so that the shearing member will efiiciently cooperate withthe cutter in trimming the cover and the cover may be accurately presented to and moved past the cutter
- the illustrated work rest and shearing member are constructed and arranged for adjustment toward and away from the rotary cutter upon a-shoe carrier base and may be secured in different positions on the base.
- the illustrated machine is provided with a flap guide which is normally fixed relatively to the locus of the cutting edge of the rotary cutter and serves to retain the end portion of the heel-breast-covering flap ad acent to the shearing member so that the flap will feed'freely between the rotary cutter and the shearing member as the shoe is moved past the rotary cutter.
- the operator is enabled accurately and quicklyto after substantially the entire heel-breast-covering flap is positioned on the breast of the heel, the end portion of the fiap being supported by the shearing member against the pressure of the rotary cutter.
- the flap is trimmed so that it extends slightly beyond the top-lift-receiving face of the heel in order that when the end portion of the tempered flap is laid on the breast of the heel it will not tend to draw away from the top lift as it dries.
- WVhere 'it is unnecessary to allow for shrinkage of the covering material it may be convenient to fit the above machine so that it will trim the end portion of the heel-breastcovering flap while the end portion of the flap rests against the breast of the heel.
- the machine as so fitted is to be recognized as comprising a workrest for a shoe having a heel and a heel-breast-covering flat extending beyond the top-lift-receiving face of the heel, and a cutter for trimming the end portion of the heel-breast-covering flap as it enters the seam formed between the top-liftattaching face of the heel and the top lift, the work rest and the cutter being constructed and arranged for relative movement as the trimming progresses.
- the machine In order to limit the depth of the trimming cut in the-covered heel breast when the machine is fitted for operating upon the flap the end portion of which is resting against the breast of the heel, the machine is provided with a stop plate positioned adjacent to the cutter and arranged to contact with the outside surface of the flap upon the heel breast when the cutter has penetrated the full thickness of the flap.

' JERSEY JERSEY, A CORPORATION OF NEW HEEL-EEEAsT-ELAP-TEIMMING MAOHI1\TE Application filed December 14, 1928. Serial No, 325.950.
This invention relates to trimming machines vand is illustrated as embodied in a machine for trimming heel-breast coverings.
In preparing a shoe sole to receive a wooden Louis heel, for example, it is customary to split the sole at its rear portion to form a flap for covering the breast of the heel, which fiap is applied to the breast of the heel after a top lift has been attached to the heel and after the heelhas been attached to theshoe.
According to one method practiced in cov ering the breasts of wooden Louis heels, after heel-breast-covering flap has been coated with cement and adhesively secured to the breast of a heel, the end portion of the flap is trimmed by passing a hand knife laterally of the breast of the heel, the knife being guided in the seam between the top lift and the heel. Trimming a heel-breast-covering flap by using the seam between the top lift and the heel as a gageline for determining the length to which the flap is to be trimmed is apt to result in a short heel-breast-covering flap in the finished shoe since the flap, which is sometimes in a tempered condition when trimmed, is liable to pull away from the top lift as it dries, due to the shrinkage of the flap,- and to leave a portion of the breast of the heel adjacent to the top lift uncovered. Moreover, in the practice of I the abovementioned hand method of trimming the ends of the heel-breast-covering flaps, difficulty is sometimes experienced in accurately guiding the trimming by the seam between the top lift and the top-lift-receiving face of the heel since the untrimmed flap generally extends beyond the breast corners and the top lift of the heel and obscures the operators view of the heel. Since the trimming of the end of the flap is generally on a piece work basis there is a tendency on the part of the operator to hurry, thus increasing the likelihood that the end of the breast-covering flap after it is trimmed will not follow the seam accurately, thereby detracting from the appearance of the finished shoe. a
An alternative method of covering the breasts of wooden Louisheels is to trim the end portion of the heel -breast-covering flap so that the end portion of the flap after being trimmed extends sufficiently beyond I trimmed flap is to be substantially longer than the length of the heel breast, it is impracticable to trim the end portion of the flap while the flap is against the heel breast due to the lack of any satisfactory support for the end portion of the flap against the pressure of the trimming knife. I Consequent- 1y, it is the practice, after the flap has been initially laid against the heel breast, to impress upon the fiap the outline of the edge forming the junction between the heel breast and the top-lift-receiving face of the heel, and then to strip the flap from the heel breast and lay its end portion upon a flat board for trimming, after which the flap is again ap plied to the'heel breast, the end of the flap being tucked under the top lift after raising the breast portion of the top lift slightly from the top-lift-receiving face of the heel. It will be evident that the hand process just outlined not only requires skill but is neces sarily aslow one. v 7 In view of the foregoing, an object of the present invention is toprovide an effective and reliable machine for expeditiously trimming the end portion of a heel-breast-covering flap by the use of which such a flap may be so trimmed that its end will be eithersubstanti-ally flush with the top-lift-receivingv face of the heel or so that the flap will be long enough to be tucked in between'the face and the top lift withoutencountering the above-stated disadvantages whichever way theflap is trimmed. With the above object in view and'in accordance with a feature of the invention, the
illustrated machinecomprises acutting blade and a work-positioning member having a shearing edge both arranged to engage a margin of sheet material projecting beyond an edge ofa heel to which the sheet material is attached as the heelis moved past the cutting blade, and mechanism arranged to operate said blade to cause its cutting edge to engage the shearing edge and to move in a path substantially parallel to the edge of the heel as it is moved past the blade, the work-positioning member being arranged to brace the projecting margin against the cutting blade.
In accordance with another feature of the invention the illustrated machine is provided with awork rest for receiving a shoe having a heel to which is secured a cover or a heel breast flap extending beyond an edge of the heel, and a rotary cutter, the Work rest and the cutter being mounted for relative movement and the work rest comprising a member which supports the [cover or flap and cooperates with thecutter in trimming a portionof the cover or flap extending beyond the edge of the heel uponthe relative movement of the work restand the cutter. In order to support the cover or flap against the action of the cutter during the trimming operation, the illustrated machine is provided witha member which separates the heel and the portion of the cover adjacent to a top-lift-receiving faceof the heel, the cover passing between "the rotary cutter and the member, which comprises a shear edge constructed and arranged to co-operate with the V cutter for trimming the cover as the shoeis moved past the rotary cutter.
A further feature of the present lnvention consists in novel means for varying the amount of cover or heel-breast-covering flap left extending beyond an edge of the heel after the trimming operation has been performed.
- For this purpose the illustrated machine is constructed and arranged to provide for adjusting the heel rest relatively to the rotary cutter in a direction generally heightwise of the heel positioned upon the rest. In order that the shearing member and the work rest may be positioned relatively to the cutter so that the shearing member will efiiciently cooperate withthe cutter in trimming the cover and the cover may be accurately presented to and moved past the cutter, the illustrated work rest and shearing member are constructed and arranged for adjustment toward and away from the rotary cutter upon a-shoe carrier base and may be secured in different positions on the base.
In accordance with another feature of the invention, the illustrated machine is provided with a flap guide which is normally fixed relatively to the locus of the cutting edge of the rotary cutter and serves to retain the end portion of the heel-breast-covering flap ad acent to the shearing member so that the flap will feed'freely between the rotary cutter and the shearing member as the shoe is moved past the rotary cutter. e
,By use of the illustrated machine, the operator, is enabled accurately and quicklyto after substantially the entire heel-breast-covering flap is positioned on the breast of the heel, the end portion of the fiap being supported by the shearing member against the pressure of the rotary cutter. When it is desired to have'the end of the flap flush with the top-lift-receiving face of the heel, the flap is trimmed so that it extends slightly beyond the top-lift-receiving face of the heel in order that when the end portion of the tempered flap is laid on the breast of the heel it will not tend to draw away from the top lift as it dries.
WVhere 'it is unnecessary to allow for shrinkage of the covering material it may be convenient to fit the above machine so that it will trim the end portion of the heel-breastcovering flap while the end portion of the flap rests against the breast of the heel.
The machine as so fitted is to be recognized as comprising a workrest for a shoe having a heel and a heel-breast-covering flat extending beyond the top-lift-receiving face of the heel, and a cutter for trimming the end portion of the heel-breast-covering flap as it enters the seam formed between the top-liftattaching face of the heel and the top lift, the work rest and the cutter being constructed and arranged for relative movement as the trimming progresses.
' In order to limit the depth of the trimming cut in the-covered heel breast when the machine is fitted for operating upon the flap the end portion of which is resting against the breast of the heel, the machine is provided with a stop plate positioned adjacent to the cutter and arranged to contact with the outside surface of the flap upon the heel breast when the cutter has penetrated the full thickness of the flap.
- While the illustrated machine is especially designed to trim the .end of a Louis heelbreast-covering flap which has been split from the sole of the shoe and the invention is set forth with particular reference to such use, it should be understood that various features of the invention are not necessarily limited in their applicability to trimming such flaps or to trimming coverings for Louis heels.
The invention will now be described with reference to the drawings which illustrate preferred embodiment thereof, and pointed out in the claims. 1

Fig. 7 shows a perspective view of the above machine fitted for trimming the end portion of a heel-breast-covering flap which is supported upon the heel breast against the pressure of a cutter during the trimming operation.
The illustrated machine for trimming the end portion of a cover or heel-breast covering flap for a Louis heel while the end portion of the flap is held away from the heel comprises a work rest 10 for engaging the heel 12 of a shoe 14 having a cover or heel-breastcovering flap 16 (Figs. 5 and 6) extending beyond the top-lift-receiving face 18 of the heel, a rotary cutter 20 and a shearing member 22 which co-operates with the rotary cutter 20 in trimming the heel-breast-covering flap 16 and is arranged to hold the heel 12 and a portion of the flap adjacent to the top-lift-receiving face 18 of the heel in separated positions. the work rest 10 being mounted for movement past the rotary cutter 20 substantially in the plane of the portion of the cover being trimmed to perform the trimming operation. 8
The operative parts of the above machine are supported by a standard 24 having a head 26, which is constructed and arranged to serve as a. bearing for a shaft 28 having a pulley 30 mounted for rotation therewith at one end and the rotary cutter 20 secured to the other end. Power for rotating the cutter 20 may be supplied by any suitable means such as a motor 32 (Fig. 1) mounted upon the standard 24 and connected to the pulley by a belt 34.
The mechanism upon which the shoe is supported to present its heel-breastcovering flap 16 accurately to the rotarycutter 20 includes a rod 36 guided for rectilinear movement in lugs 38, 40 extending forwardly of the standard 24, a shoe carrier base 42 secured to the top of the rod 36 by a pin 44 (Fig. 1) and the work rest 10 carried upon the shoe carrier. base 42 through elements which will now be described. V
Clamped to the rear portion of the shoe carrier base 42 through a threaded bolt 46 (Figs. 1 and 3) is an upright bracket 48 having a slot 50 (Fig. 1) for receiving the bolt 46 and arranged for sliding movement relatively to the shoe carrier base 42toward and away from the rotary cutter 20 in a groove 52 (Fig. 3) in the rear face of the shoe carrier base 42. The upright bracket 48 is pro,- vided at the top of its outside end 54 with a rearwardly extending arm 56 having a flange portion 58 (Fig. 4) for receiving a set-screw 60, the purpose of which will appear later.
In order to support the work rest 10 so that it may be moved relatively to theup right bracket 48 lengthwise of the shaft 28 for adjusting the work rest relatively to the cutter to vary the position lengthwise of the flap at which the cutter operates upon the flap, the work rest 10 is screwed at 62 (Fig. 4) to the end of a stud 64 which is square in cross sectionand extends through an opening in the upright bracket 48 in which the stud 64 is arranged to fit slidingly. The rear portion of the stud 64 4) has a head66 and engaging the front face 68 of the head 66 of the stud and the rear face 70 of the upright bracket 48 is a spring 72 encircling the stud 64 and tending to urge the stud 64 and the work rest 10 rearwardly of the machine until the head 66 of the stud comes into contact with the set-screw 60 through which the work rest 10 may be initially adjusted relatively to the rotary cutter 20 lengthwise of the axis of the rotary cutter.
In order that the heel which is supported by the work rest 10 and the portionof the heel-breast-covering flap 16 adjacent to the top-lift-receiving face 18 of the heel may be held in separated positions to support the flap for trimming the end portion thereof so that after the operation it will extend beyond the top-lift-attaching face in order that it may be compressed upon the heel breast flush with the top-lift-receiving face or may be tucked under the top lift, the machine is provided with the shearing member 22 having a shear edge 71 arranged to co-operate with the rotary cutter 20 during the trimming operation to make the severing cut, the shearing member being secured to the inn-er end of the upright bracket 48 by screws 74 (Figs. 4and 5) and extending in front of a face 7 5 (Fig. 7) of the heel support 10.
The forward portion of the shoe is steadied upon .the machine by placing a portion of the sole 76 (Fig. 4) of the shoe against a rest 78 which is clamped to a forwardly extending arm 80 of the shoe carrier base 42 by a wing nut 84. g
The work rest 10 having a shoe positioned thereon as illustrated in Figs. 1, 4 and 5 and supported upon the rod 36 is moved past the rotary cutter 20 by pressing upon the shoe carrier base 42 by hand thus depressing the rod 36 against a spring 86 which encircles the rod 36 between the lug 40 and a collar 88 mounted upon the rod 36, the collar 88 be ing provided with a set-screw 90 for adjustwably securing the collar:88 along the rod 36 for varying the pressure of the spring 86 to cause the work support to assume its proper initial raised position when the machine is idle, For preventing the shoe carrier base 42 from turning relatively to the standard 24 and hence relatively to the rotary cutter 20 the collar has a fiat rear face 92 (Fig. 2) arranged for sliding movement upon the front face 94 of the standard. Keyed to the rod 36 above the collar 88 is another collar 96 having a pad 98 of resilient material on its upper face, the collar 96 serving to limit the upward movement of the rod 36 in the lugs 88, 40 and the resilient material acting as a buffer be tween the collar 96 and the lug 38 to prevent excessive vibration as the upward movement of the rod 36 is suddenly stopped. When the shoe has been moved past therotary cutter 20 to have its heel-breast-covering flap 16 trimmed it is removed from the machine and the work rest then assumes its raised position under the action of the spring 86.
In order to retain the heel-breast-covering flap 16 adjacent to the face 100 of the shearing member 22 during the trimming operation, the machine is provided with a flap guide 102 adjustably secured to a plate 106 (Fig. 4) mounted upon the head 26, which flap guide 102 may be initially moved toward and away from the shearing member 22 by means of the screws 104 arranged to move in slots 108 (Fig. 1) in the flap guide 102. The flap guide 102 which has a flange portion 110 for assisting in starting the flap between the shearing member 22 and the flap guide 102, extends substantially lengthwise of the shaft and is fixed relatively to the'locus of the cutting edge of the cutter except when it is be ing adjusted as above described, The plate 106 also serves as a support for a guard 112 for protecting the operator fromaccidentally coming into contact with the rotary cutter as the work is moved past the cutter.
In View of the foregoing description it is clear that the work rest 10 may be initially adjusted relatively to the shearing member 22 and the rotary cutter 20 lengthwise of the axis of rotation of the shaft 28 by manipulation of the set-screw 60 for varying. the length of the heel-breast-covering flap 16. This feature is especially useful where it is desired to trim an extra long flap for turning the same upon the top-lift-receiving face of the heel or where it is desired to trim a tempered flap so that before it is applied to the 'heel it extends beyond the top-lift-receiving face of the heel and must be compressed upon the heel breast adjacent to the top-lift-receiving face of the heel,in order that when it dries it will not be liable to pull away from the top lift of the heel. The work rest 10 may be also moved toward and away from the rotary cutter 20in a direction generally in the plane of the rotary cutter for adjusting the work rest relatively to said cutter preparatory to the trimming operation by unscrewing the threaded bolt 46 and sliding the upright bracket 48 relatively to the shoe carrier base 42 (Fig.
Where it is desired, for example, to use the machine for trimming the end of each of the h-eel-breast-covering flaps to lie flush with the top-lift-receiving face 18 of the heel while the end portion of the flap is supported upon t 1e breast of the heel, the shearing member 22 may be removed from the upright bracket 4. by loosening the screws '4" 4 (Fig. 5) and a stop plate 1 16 supported for adjustment in a recess 118 in the guard 112 is then added to the machine. lVhen operating upon the end portion of a heel-breast-covering flap supported upon the breast of the heel it is customary first to trim the sides of the flap flush with the breast corners of the heel as illustrated in if 7. In order to limit the cutting depth of the rotary cutter 20 when the machine is thus fitted for trimming heelbree t-covering flaps the stop plate 116 is positioned in front of the rotary cutter 20, the end 120 of the stop plate being arranged for engaging the breast of the heel to limit the depth to which the cutter may penetrate the covered heel breast. The work rest is usually positioned relatively to the cutter 20 by the at screw 60 so that when the heel is posi- 'oned upon the work rest 10, as shown in the cutter will trim the flap adjacent seam formed between the top lift 122 and the top-lift-receiving face 18 of the heel, the cutter 20 entering t ie seam as it cuts through the flap.
- In. performing the heel-breast-covering flap trimming opera ti-on the shoe is presented to the machine by engaging the heel of the shoe against the work support 10 so that the breast ef the top lift of the heel is in contact with the face 124 of the shearing member 22, the shoe being. steadied in the machine by pressure of the sole Y6 ofthe shoe against the rest T When the shoe is correctly positioned in the machine the rod 36 is manually depressed so as to move the shoe past the rotai cutter 20, the heel-breast-covering flap 16 being positioned between the shearing member and the rotary cutter 20 as the trimming operation takes place. After the flap has been trimmed the operator removes the shoe from the machine and t 1e shoe supporting instrumentalities assume their original. raised position under the pressure of the ring 86 for receiving another shoe.
hen the hcel-breastrovering flap is immed while supporting it upon the heel breast against the pressure of the cutter, the heel of the shoe is positioned upon the work support 10 (Fig. 7) with its breast substantially flush with the face 75 of the work sup port, the shoe being steadied and then moved past the cutter as above described.

A trimming machine having, in combination, a rest having a shearing edge and constructed and arranged to engage a heel having a cover secured to one of its faces and extending beyond said face, and a cutter having a movable cutting edge past which said heel supported by the rest is moved, said cutter being constructed and arranged to cause the cutting portion of its cutting edge to move substantially along the path of move- 7 ment of the heel past the cutter and to cooperate with the shearing edge progressively to trim the cover extending beyond said face.
55. A trimming machine having, in combination, a cutter, a gage having a shearing edge and constructed and arranged to support a marginal portion of a cover attached to and projecting beyond an edge of the breast of a heel as the heel is moved past the cutter, and means constructed and arranged to cause an operative cutting portion of the cutter to move generally lengthwise of the path of movement of the heel past the cutter and to cooperate with the shearing edge to trim the marginal portion of the cover to a predetermined length.
56. A trimming machine having, in combination, a cutter, a gage having a shearing edge and constructed and arranged to support a marginal portion of a cover attached to and projecting beyond an edge of the breast of a heel as the heel is moved past the cutter, and means constructed and arranged to cause an efiective cutting portion of the cutter to move generally lengthwise of the path of movement of the heel past the cutter and in a direction opposite to the direction of movement of the heel past the cutter and to cooperate with the shearing edge to trim the marginal portion of the cover to a predetermined length.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification.
