Description

NOV. 22, 1932. w, N wHl 1,888,340
0 IGARETTE HOLDER Filed Jan. 11. 1950 [m1 v /Z a W/LL/AN /y W, inventor Patented Nov. 22, 1932 UNITED STATES WILLIAM N'. WHITE, OF SPOKANE, WASHINGTON CIGARETTE HOLDER Application filed January 11, 1930. Serial No. 420,119.
My present invention relates to an improved cigarette holder having means whereby the cigarette may with facility be inserted.
r in the holder and firmly clasped or retained therein, and whereby the butt-end or unconsumed portion of the cigarette may with equal facility be released and dropped from the holder when no longer desired.
In carrying out my invention I fashion the holder with a recessed, stationary or fixed jaw, and a complementarily recessed, spring pressed movable or hinged jaw which is pivoted in the body of the holder for retaining the cigarette end in the socket formed by the recessed jaws. Depressible means are utilized for releasing the hinged aw, and to insure an air tight joint between the two jaws and prevent escape of air therefrom, I fashion I the contacting edges of the recessed jaws with overlapping flanges that not only prevent escape of air, but also provide guides for proper closing and opening of the jaws.
The invention consists in certain novel comor binations and arrangements of parts as will hereinafter be more fully set forth and claimed. In the accompanying drawing I have illustrated one complete example, (and a slight modification thereof) of the physical embodiment of my invention wherein the parts are combined and arranged according to two of the modes I have thus far devised for the practical application of the principles of my invention.
0 Figure 1 is a view in side elevation showing a cigarette in the holder, and indicating by dotted lines the movement of the'hinged jaw.
Figure 2 is a view looking down on the holder and cigarette of Figure 1.
A Figure 3 is an enlarged front end view of the holder showing the air tight joint between the jaws.
Figure 4 is cross sectional view at line 4-4 of Figure 1.
Figure 5 is a perspective view showing the fixed jaw portion of the holder, the hinged jaw being omitted for convenience of illustration.
Figure 6 is aview of a slightly modified 59 form of the invention.
Figure 7 is an enlarged cross sectional view at line 77 of Figure 6.
its front end the holder is fashioned with a 60 fixed or stationary jaw 4 that is recessed at 5 and provided with a flat face 6 at which the front end of the duct terminates, and this face forms the abutment for the inner end of the cigarette when the latter is inserted in the holder. i
From the abutment a tapered rib 7 extends rearwardly, and at the sides of this rib in the body of the holder, are formed sides faces or edges 8, which at the edges of the recessed jaw 4 are fashioned as beveled flanges 9.
In one face of the holder a groove 10 of suliicient depth is provided and at the rear end of this groove a counter-sunk socket 11 is fashioned, the latter being arranged radially of the axis of the holder and the former being arranged parallel with the axis of the holder.
Thehinged jaw 12 is complementary in shape to the fixed jaw, and the jaw 12 has a pivotplate 13 fixed at its rear end and located in the groove 10. The pivot plate is perforated to receive the pivot pin 14 that extends transversely through the plate and is anchored in the body of the holder, and the plate also has affixed thereto a depressible or push button 15. The push button is partially located in the socket 11 but projects slightly therefrom in order that the thumb or finger may press on the button to release the hinged jaw. The button, rwithin the socket, is provided with a guide pin 16, and a coiled spring 17 is retained by the pin between the inner face of the button and the bottom face of the socket 11, and it will be apparent that the button may be depressed against the tension of the spring to release the hinged jaw, while the latter is normally held closed by the tension of the spring on the button.
The front end of the jaw is recessed at 18 to co-operate with the recess 5 of the fixed jaw to form the socket in which the end of the cigarette is inserted, and at the edges of the recessed movable jaw are fashioned flanges 19 complementary to the flanges 9 of the fixed jaw. As best seen in Figure 3 the flanges of the hinged jaw overhang and frictionally engage with the outer faces of the flanges 9 to guide the movable jaw as it closes or opens, and to form an air tight joint between the closed jaws to prevent escape of smoke or air from the recessed end of the holder and insure that the smoke shall pass to the rear through the duct from the cigarette when the smoker puffs the cigarette.
In Figures 6 and 7 a slightly modified form of the spring pressed hinged jaw is illustrated, the fixed jaw 20 being substantially the same as the jaw 4 of the Figure 5, and the hinged jaw 21 being provided with a hinge plate, and a hinge pin 22', the latter extending transversely of the holder, plate, and hinged aw so that the latter may swing outwardly from the fixed jaw to release the cigarette butt, as Well as to facilitate insertion of the cigarette in the socket of the aws.
In Figure 7 the depressible members for the hinged jaw include an inverted U-shaped yoke 23 that passes through the fixed part of the holder and partially through the movable jaw, and the yoke is provided with a push button 24 exterior of the holder. The free ends of the yoke are connected loosely to the front ends of pivot plates 26 and the rear ends of these plates are perforated to accommodate the pivot pin. The button and its yoke are depressible against the tension of a spring 27 and the two separate parts of the holder are recessed and slotted to accommodate the necessary movement of the yoke, plates, etc.
In both forms of the invention the cigarette is firmly clasped and retained by means of the spring pressed jaws, and the socket for the cigarette is rendered air tight, or substantially so for preventing escape of smoke or air from the socket.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is In a cigarette holder, the combination with a bit-portion, a fixed, integral recessed jaw having a flat face forming a perpendicular abutment wall, and flanged edges on the jaw, of a hinged jaw having complementary overhanging flanges, a longitudinally extending pivot plate fixed at one end to the hinged aw and located within a groove intermediate the bit portion and the fixed jaw, a pivot for the plate, a button on the plate depressible within a socket at the rear end of the groove, and a spring within the socket beneath the button.
In testimony whereof I afiix my signature.
WILLIAM N. WHITE.
