This invention relates to a method for forming wall board channels and the like employed in constructing walls, ceilings and the like from plaster boards, wall boards or similar structural elements.
The invention relates particularly to a method of manufacturing a double channel.
member developed from a single strip of material, the channels being arranged in opposed relation and opening outwardly to receive the adjacent edges of a pair of wall or plaster boards.
My improved method will be explained more in detail in the accompanying specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, wherein Flgure 1 is a diagrammatic elevation of a machine for carrying out my improved method;
Figures 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9 and 10 are cross-sections respectively on lines 22; 3-3; 44; 5-5; 66; 77; 8-8; 99; and 10-10 of Figure 1, and
Figure 11 is a fragmentary perspective view of the channel member, the product of this method.
Referring first to Figure 11 it will be noted that the problem involved is that of producing a double channel member having opposed outwardly pressed or opening channels 10, the bases 11 of which are disposed slightly spaced but parallel to one another. channel is developed from a single strip of metal so that the side flanges of the channels 1O at one side thereof are integral as indicated at 12. The other side of each channel is extended beyond the edge of the integral channel side and this projecting edge has the metal thereof upset at spaced points to provide projections 13 which in the use of the channel constitute plaster gauge means.
The rolling machine illustrated in elevation in Figure 1 comprises a series of pairs of forming rolls 15, 16, 17, 18, 19, 20, 21 and 22, and a pair of rolls 23 which act to form the projections 13.
Figures 2 to 9 inclusive are cross-sections through the several sets of rolls and the manner in which the strip is progressively transversely fashioned will be readily ap- The 7 parent from an examination of these figures. However, as will be noted from Figure 2, the strip is first transversely fashioned to form a substantially shallow channel having an inverted V-shaped base 24 and laterally extending side flanges 25. The action of the rolls 16 is to longitudinally angularly bend the lateral flanges 25 of the channel, the V-shaped crosssection of the base 24 being maintained. The rolls 17 further longitudinally angularly bend the side or lateral flanges 25 and in Figure 5, the rolls 18 are shown as having, bent the portions 25 of the flanges 25 which are immediately adjacent the base 24 in a plane substantially perpendicular to the base 24. g
The rolls 19 comprise upper and lower rolls19A and side rolls 1913. The upper and lowerrolls 19A engage the base 24 of the strip whereas the side rolls 19B engage the side'flanges 25 and act to fashion the same into substantial. U-shaped channels. I
In Figure 7 the top and bottom rolls 20A engage the base 24 of the strip whereas the side rolls 2013 further fashion the side flanges 25 into U-shaped channels. This fashioning progresses further by reason of the action of the set of rolls 21 which include upper and lower rolls 21A and side rolls 21B. The inverted V-shaped contour of the'base 24 is, 30 it will be noted, still maintained.
However, the set'of rolls 22 illustrated in Figure 9 act through the medium of the upper and lower rolls 22A to straighten out or .fiatten the V-shaped base 25 to thus arrange the bases 11 of thedouble channel member substantially parallel to one another. The side rolls 22B act to complete the opposed channels 10 and to flatten out the return-bent flange portions 12 of the double channel.
As has been previously pointed out, the
The strip as it leaves the forming rolls illustrated in Figure is fashioned in the manner clearly illustrated in Figure 11. Thus, an integral double channel member is produced and in constructing walls, ceilings and the like with wall boards, plaster boards and the like, the adjacent edges of a pair of boards may be received in the opposed channels 10. The channel members are secured to the frame members of the wall or ceiling in any preferred or desired manner and the projections 13 act as plaster gauges for the coating of plastersubsequently applied to the boards.
Havin thus described my invention, what I claim is: r 1. The method of forming wall board channel strips including, thesteps of progressivel'y transversely fashioning the strip to form a channel, and fashioning the sides of said channel to form opposed outwardly opening channels havingthe outer face of one side of each of said latter channels formed by the base of said first channel.
2. The method of forming wall board channel strips including, the steps ofprogressively transversely fashioning the strip to -form a channel, fashioning the sides of said channels to form oppositely outwardly opening channels, outwardly displacing portions of the metal from one of the flanges of each of said opposed channels and advancing the stripby engagement of the displacing means With the recesses formed thereby.
3.-The method of forming wall board channel strips which consists in advancing a metal strip, and during the advancement progressively fashioning the cross-sectional contour thereof to form a substantial channel shape, and subsequently fashioning the side flanges and base of said channel to form opposed channels opening outwardly.
4. The method of forming wall board channel strips which consists in advancing a metal strip, and during the advancement progressively fashioning the cross-sectional contour thereof to form a substantial channel shape, and subsequently fashioning the base and-side flanges of said channel to form oppossed channels with the side flanges of unequal width, and outwardly displacing portions of the metal from the edges of the wider flanges.
5; In the method of forming wall board channel strips which consists inadvancing ametal strip, andduring the advancement progressively fashioning the cross-sectional contour thereof to form a substantial channel having an inverted V-shaped base and side flanges, fashioning said side flanges to form opposed channels opening outwardly, and flattening said base to bring the bases of said channels in alignment.
6. The method of forming wall board channel strips which consists in advancing a metal strip and during the advancement progressively fashioning the cross-sectional contour thereof to form a shallow channel having an upwardly extending angular base and lateral flanges, progressively transversely fashioning said lateral flanges to form substantial. U-shaped channels, and finally flattening said base to dispose the bases of said U-shaped channels parallel and to arrange said channels opening outwardly.
7. The method of forming wallboard channel strips which consists in advancing ,a metal strip, and during the advancement progressively fashioning the cross-sectional contour thereof. to form a shallow channel having lateral flanges, progressively transversely fashioning said lateral flanges to form substantial U-shaped channels with the free side flange of each channel of greater width than th-eother side flange, and upsetting, the metal of the projecting portion of each flange to form projections.
8. The method of forming wall, board channel strips which consists in advancing a metal strip, and during the advancement progressively fashioning the cross-sectional contour thereof to form a shallow channel having an.upwardlyeXtending base and lateral flanges, progressively transversely fashioning said lateral flanges to form substantial U-shaped channels with the free side flange of each channel of greater: width than the othen side flange, flattening said base to dispose the bases ofsaid. U -shaped channels parallel, andupsettingthe metal ofthe projecting portion of each flange to form projections.
In testimony whereof I aflix my signature.
