Patented Nov. 15, 1932 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE WALTER KLEINOW, OE HENNIGSDORF, NEAR. BERLTN,- ALBERT MORGENROTH, OF NIEDIEENEUENDORF, NEAR BERLIN, FRIEDRICH EEINHARDT, OF HENNIGSDORE, NEAR BERLIN, AND WILHELM BRUER, OF TELTEN, GERMANY COOLING SYSTEM FOR NOZZLE BURNERS Original application filed March 24, 1927, Serial No. 178,073, Patent No. 1,789,035, and in Germany May 1,
1925. Divided and this application filed March 14, 1929. Serial No. 847,100.
This ap lication is a division of our application erial No. 178,073, filed March 24, 1927, now Patent No. 1,739,035, issued December 10, 1929.
The invention relates to cooling systems for nozzle burners such as are used for the burning of pulverized fuel in locomotive boilers and wherein the burners are cooled by means of water.
The object of the invention is to provide an improved water cooling system possessing certain advantages which are pointed out hereinafter, and for a consideration of what we believe to be novel and our invention, attention is directed to the following specification and the claims appended thereto.
The drawing shows a diagrammatic view partly in section of a system embodying our invention.
Referring to the drawing, 1 indicates generally a locomotive boiler provided with burners to which powdered fuel and air are supplied after the manner, for example, shown in our Patent No. 1,739,035. The burners contain suitable passages for the flow of cooling water, the water being conveyed to the burners 2 by pipe 3 and discharged from the burners through a pipe 4. 5 indicates the boiler tubes and 6 indicates the water and steam space of the boiler. At the left hand side of the drawing, 7 indicates a supply of water which may be the water tank carried by the locomotive tender.
According to the embodiment of the invention illustrated in the drawing, the inlet conduit 3 for the cooling water is connected to the supply tank 7 and the discharge conduit 4 for the cooling water is connected to the inlet side of a relatively small tank 8. The cooling water for the burners is taken from tank 7 and circulated through the burners 2 by means of a suitable pump 9, the suction side of which is connected to tank 7 by a pipe 10 and the discharge side of which is 5 connected to the burners by pipe 3. Water is discharged from the burners through pipe 4 to the small tank 8 from which it returns through a pipe 12 to tank 7. Connected to tank 8 is the suction side of a feed water pump 13, the discharge side of such pump being connected by a pipe 14, to the water space of the boiler. In pipe line 14 is a heater 15. With the arrangement shown the pump 9 serves simply to circulate water from sup ply tank 7 through the burners and the small tank and back again to the tank. The burners offer comparatively little resistance to the flow of water, and hence pump 9 is required to pump against a comparatively low head, which means that there is but little pressure built up in the water cooling conduits of the burners. The feed water pump 13 takes such water as is required for feeding the boiler from the small tank 8 to which its suction side is connected. By this means the pump 13 supplies water to the boiler which has been previously heated in the burners.
WVhat we claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States is 1. The combination with a boiler having a burner provided with a conduit for the circulation of cooling water, of a water supply tank, a pumping means provided between said tank and the inlet of said conduit, a small tank having an inlet and an outlet, said inlet being connected to the outlet of said conduit, and said small tank outlet being connected to said water supply tank whereby said pumping means is adapted to cause circulation of cooling water between said water supply tank and said small tank, and means for supplying water from said small tank to said boiler.
2. The combination with a boiler having a burner provided with a conduit for the circulation of cooling water, of a water supply tank, a pumping means provided between said tank and the inlet of said conduit, a small tank having an inlet and an outlet,
said inlet being connected to the outlet of said conduit, and said small tank outlet being connected to said water supply tank whereby said pumping means is adapted to cause circulation of cooling water bet-ween said water supply tank and said small tank, another pumping means having its inlet connected to said small tank and its outlet to said boiler whereby it is adapted to supply said boiler from said smaller tank with preheated feed water.
In witness whereof, we have hereunto set our hands this 23rd day of February 1929.
WALTER KLEINOW. ALBERT MORGENROTH. FRIEDRICH REINHARDT. WILHELM BRUER.
