This invention relates to apparatus for starting internal combustion engines and has for its object an arrangement of this type in which a transmission element interposed between the crank shaft and secondary shafts (cam shaft and magneto shaft, etc.) is used to give the starting impulse.
With this arrangement the starting is ef-v fected without addition of other parts to the motor and consequently without increasing its weight'or size and with a high ratio of transmission without introducing another gear between the starting element and the motor shaft. 7
According to this invention the idler gear of the timing gear train of the engine between the engine shaft and the secondary shafts is adapted to be operated through a ratchet or wound on and attached to a rotatable member connected with said pinion by the intermediate of a one-way clutch or coupling.
Embodiments of the present invention are illustrated by way of example on the annexed drawing in which Figure 1 is a front view o'fatwo-stroke single-cylinder engine provided with an embodiment of this invention; Y

Said idler gear 10 is mounted on the starting crank spindle 2 by means of an antifriction bearing 13 and is one-way connected therewith by means of a ratchet or one-way clutch exemplified as comprising ratchet teeth 14 on spindle 2 and rollers 15 located intermediate said ratchet teeth 14 and the bore of the hub of gear 10.
At the time the engine is started the drive of starting crank l and spindle 2 is imparted by ratchet clutch 14-15 to" the pinion 10 :which drives pinion 9 and crank shaft 5 for starting purposes while duringthe normal en-' gine operation the gear 10 revolves freely on spindle 2 to drive pinion- 11 and parts asso ciated therewith. v v y In the construction shown in Figures 3 and 4, the spindle 2 is provided with a driving 1 .drum'or pulley 16 on which a rope or cord 17 iswound and attached by one of its ends, and, then for starting the engine a pull is exerted on said cord 17 to drive drum 16,-spindle 2 and gear-10 and impart a starting impulse to the engine crank shaft 5. i
Conveniently the drum 16 is connected with a stationary part as the engine casing 4 by means of a return spring 18 which operates to windup again the cord 17 on said drum 16 quent starting operation.

In an internal combustion engine having a toothed wheel gear train for imparting rotation to secondary shafts of the engine during its operation, said gear train comprising an idler gear; a spindle, a starting operating member solid with said spindle, said idler giear being mounted for rotation on said spine and a one-way clutch operative between said sglindle and said idler gear.
