WINDING DEVICE Filed Nov. ll, 1929 INVENTOR. @Ya/a www@ qoRNm/sk Patented Nov. l, 1932 UNITED STATES THOMAS WATKINS AND LORIN I). BAUM, OF BERKELEY, CALIFORNIA WINDING DEVICE Application filed November This invention is a winding device to be used for measuring fabric or cloth in bolt remnants for invoicing and has for its main object, the provision of an inexpensive device in which a remnant of a bolt of cloth may be readily mounted. by means of the core board, the cloth being passed from the bolt into cooperation with a measuring device of known manufacture, and rewound on another core board by means of a hand operated crank handle.
Another object of the invention is to provide a winding device which is simple in construction and operation and inexpensive to manufacture.
A further object of the invention is to provide a Winding device which will not be in- 'm'clined to stretch the material during the rewinding of the bolt.
Other objects and advantages of the invention will become apparent as the following description is read on the drawing forming a part of this specification and in which similar reference characters are used to designate similar parts throughout the several views and in which:
' Fig. 1 is a side elevation of the invention.
Fig. 2 is a plan view of the invention showing' core boards in place.
Fig. 3 an end elevation of Fig. 2.
Fig. 4 is a broken detail view of the core board retaining spring finger.
Fig. 5 is a sectional view taken on line 5 5 of Fig. 4.
The invention consists of two similar, 0ppositely disposed side frames, each side frame consisting of a base member 10, having fiXedly mounted at each end, terminal standards 13, the standards being secured to the base members with clip angles 4 or other suitable means.
Intermediate the terminal standards 13 and spaced apart are two guide supporting standards 14 which are secured to the base members by means of clip angles 15. Suitable crossbracing 16 is provided between the end standards and the adjacent intermediate standard and a strut 17. between the intermediate standards completes the bracing of the structure.
11, 1929. Serial N0. 408,326.
A bearing is provided adjacent the top of each terminal standard for shafts `19 by securing a clip angle 18 to the upper portion of the standards 1.3 and forming a suitable hole through the opposed legs of the i standard and clip angle, as indicated.`
The core board heads consists of a head bar 21, which is intermediately secured on the shaft 19, one of the shafts 19 having an extension which is formed into a crank arm 27 on 16-0 which a handle 28 is pivotally secured.
The core board retaining lingers 22 consist of a bar of resilient material bent to U form adapted to resiliently secure the board 23 between the fingers as shown in Fig. 5, the lingers being secured by means of a rivet passing through the intermediate connecting portion of the fingers and the bar 21.
FiXedly secured, and vertically spaced adjacent the upper endv of intermediate "0 standards 14 as indicated at 24 are sections of pipe 25, inside of which is disposed a round bar 26 and which is slidably fitted in one of the pipes of each pair, thereby permitting transverse adjustment of the side frames.
The two base members 10 are adjustably connected by means of the transverse cooperating bars 11 and 12, the bolts 29 being threadedly fixed in the bar 11 and passing through slots in bar 12 as is customarily done.
The space between the telescopic guides -26 is in a plane with the core boards 23 when mounted in the spring fingers, whereby they act only as an intermediate support for the cloth as it passes from one core board to the other.
Any suitable measuring device may be mounted on one of the standards 14, so as to cooperate with the cloth as it passes from one core to the other. 9o
The device is used by first speading the frames so as to permit mounting of the bolt by passing the core board -between the spring lingers under the cloth, then adjusting the side frames toward each other until the core si' boards engage the connecting member of the spring lingers.
The end of the cloth is then passed between each pair of guides 25 and secured to the core board at the crank operated end of the device by inserting the end of the cloth betWeen the board and the spring fingers.
The cloth is then Wound from one core board to the other, the measuring device cooperating With the cloth as it passed from one core board to the other.
Having described an operable method of constructing and using the invention it Will be noted that variations in construction and 1 arrangement of parts which are consistent With the appended .claims may be resorted t0 Without detracting from the spirit or scope of the invention or sacrilicing any of the advantages thereof.
We claim:
l. A Winding device consisting of a pair of base members transversely adjustable relative to each other, telescopic adjusting members connecting said base members, a standard at 2 each end of each base member, a bolt' core retaining device rotatably mounted on each of said standards and intermediate pairs of: standards, each pair connected by two spaced -apart telescopic guides.
2; A Winding device consisting of a pair of base members transversely adjustable relative to each other, telescopic adjusting members connecting said base members, a standard `-secured at eac-h end'of each base member,
3 'a bolt core holder provided With friction gripping fingers rotatably mounted on each of -said standards land tWo pair of spaced interniediate s'tm'i'dards 'each pair being connected transversely by two spaced apart parfallel, telescopic guides.
, 3. -A AWinding device comprising a pair of base'members transversely adjustable, standards at'each endA of each base member, a bolt core retaining device rotatablymounted ad- 40 aceii't'tie'top of zeachfend standard, two inlterrndia'te standards for each base member oiimingt'wo pair of standards and tWo ltele- 'scopic guides connecting each pair o'sta-ndards and lspaced sapart, said guides being 5 4adapted`fte receive a strip of material ltherebe'twveen'fpassing from a core board mounted inthe core retaining devices at one en'd'to a lcore board mounted inthe core retaining de'- vices jaft-theother end, and 'a/cranl or'opera'ting'one ofsaid vcore retaining devices.
l In testimony whereof We afix our signatures. y j
