This invention relates to folders for printing machines of the class used for printing magazines and similar products, and is adapted to perforate these products, so they may convenientlybe bound in a loose leaf binder.
It is the especial object ofthe invention to provide1 a folder having mechanism inoorporated therein, that will receive a cut product, convey it to a perforating'mechanism, register it, hold it in register, perforate it, all then forward it to a delivery point.'-
It is also an object of the invention to provide a folder having a perforating mecha-V nism incorporated therein, which will be simple, durable and. inexpensive in construction, as wc'l as convenient, practical, serviceable With the foregoing and other objects in View, which will appear as thev description proceeds, thel invention residesrin the combination and arrangement of parts, and in the details u of construction hereinafter deiscribed and claimed, it being understood that various changes in the precise embodiment of the invention herein disclosed may be made Within the scope of what is vclaimed without departing from the spirit of the invention. The arm 38 is connected bya pivot pin -to the rod 44, which is fitted to slide in the poppet head -45', secured to the frame 11.` 'A spring 46,'is placed between the poppet head 45 and a washer 47, on the rod 44, and acts to press the presser' and stripper bar 34, downward.
Punches 48, which engage with stationary dies 49, are secured to the sliding heads 51, that are fitted to slide in ways 52, secured to the brace 53. Means for adjusting the ways to compensate for wear are provided by the screws 54. j
The heads 51, are formed with lugs 55, to which links 56, are pivotally connected. These links are similarly connected to arms 57, secured to a shaft 58, rotatably supported in bearings in the frames 11 and 11. Another arm 59, is also secured to the shaft 58, and is pivotally connected to the rod 61, which is forked at 62, to engage opposite sides of the shaft 26, and carries a roller 63, which engages a grooved face cam 64, secured to the shaft 26.
Lower forwarding tapes or belts 65, pass around tightener pulleys 66, and fixed pulleys 67, and are driven by the cylinder 68, which is secured to the shaft 69, to which the gear 71 is keyed. Upper forwarding tapes 7 2 pass around pulleys 73, which are loose on the shaft 58, under tightener pulley 74, around pulleys 75, which are spring pressed into engagement with the cylinder 16, over the cylinder 68,` and around pulleys 76, secured to the shaft 77, to which the gear 78 is keyed.
The gear 78, meshes with the gear 71, which meshes with gear 79, which is loose on the shaft 26. Gear 81 is secured to cylinder V16, and meshes with gear 79, `and also with gear 82, secured to cylinder 12. An arm 88, secured to the shaft of the cylinder 16, carries a crank pin 84, to which a rod 85, is connected. The other end of this rod is connected at 86, to anl arm 87, secured to the shaft 88, which is rotatably supported in the frames 11 and 11. The arm 89, is also secured. to the shaft 88, land pivotally connected at 91, with the link 92, which is connected at 98, with the slider 94, which is fitted to the slide 95, and carries packer fingers 96, which thus are given a reciprocating motion, into and out of the packer boX 97.
A clutch member 98, slides on a feather on the shaft 26, and engages with a mating clutch member formed on the gear 79. This pro vides means for connecting and disconnecting the gear 79 and the shaft 26.
In the operation of the mechanism shown, the printed and cut sheets are carried on the folding cylinder 12, and transferred to the cylinder 16, being then folded to form a signature. From the cylinder 16, they are removed by stripper fingers 17, and are then engaged by the tapes and 72, between which they are forwarded to the punching mechanism. Their motion is arrested by the front stops 19, and the back jogger stop 28, then rises and properly positions them. The sheets are thus arranged in proper register for punching. The presser and stripper bars 84, then bear down and hold them securely, while the punch is operating. As the punch rises, the sheets are stripped therefrom, the stops descend below the guides 18, the bars 34 are raised, and the perforated product is carried forward to the discharge point or delivery indicated at 99. ln the embodiment of the invention shown, the product is then dropped on edge, in the packer box 97, where the fingers 96, push each signature and those ahead of it forward after it is delivered, in order to make space for the following signature. lf desired, side oggers may be added to align the sheets sideways before they are perforated. These can be operated by a well known mechanism, and will be found advantageous in handling some'kinds of products.
lt will be understood .that the mechanism may operated to punch the product before delivery as described, or that by disconnecting the clutch 98, the stop operating mechanism, the presser device and the punching mechanism may be silenced and the product will then be delivered without being punched.
lt will also be understood that the punching mechanism herein disclosed for punching prerviously folded products, can be used to punch sheets forwarded directly from cutting cylinders and unfold, and if desired, the conveying mechanism may be arranged to deliver them to a mechanism whereby they may be folded after punching. f Y- It will furthermore be understood that the term folder is herein used to designate the portion of the machine that cuts they previously printed web into sheets, and perhaps collects several such sheets that may be foldded before delivery, thus forming a combined product, or the sheets may be delivered flat without being folded.
What 1 'claim is:
1. ln combination with a printing machine folder, a perforating mechanism including a reciprocating punch, means for conveying a previously printed and cut product to the perforating mechanism and to a delivery point, means for registering the product for perforating, and means for compressing the product adjacent to the point at which-it is perforated and holding it compressed while it is being perforated and while the punch is being withdrawn. 2. ln combination with a printing machine folder, a perforating mechanism including a reciprocating punch, means for conveyinga previously printed and cut product to the perforating mechanism to a delivery point, means for registering the product for perforating, means for compressing the product adjacent to the point at which it is perforated yand holding it compressed while perforating it while the punch is being withdrawn; said registering means and said compressing means being driven in timed relation to the perforating means. f
3. In combination with a printing machine folder, a perforating mechanism including a reciprocating punch, means for conveying a cut and folded product from the folder to and from the perforating mechanism, means for registering the product for perforating, and means for compressing the product adj acent to the point at which it is perforated and holding it compressed while it is being perforated and until the punch is withdrawn.
4. In combination with a printing machine folder, a perforating mechanism including a reciprocating punch, means for conveying a cut and folded product from the folder to and from the perforating mechanism, means for registering the product for perforating7 means for compressing the product adjacent to the point at which it is perforated and means for stopping and registering the product for perforating it, means for compressing the product and holdingit compressed while it is being perforated, and means for silencing the registering mechanism, the compressing mechanism and the perforating mechanism,
whereby the product may be delivered without being perforated.
9. In combination with a printing machine folder, a perforating mechanism including a reciprocating punch, means` for conveying a previously cut product to the perforating mechanism and to a delivery, stopping and jogging means to register the product for vperforating, means for compressing the product adjacent to the point at which it is perforated and holding it compressed while perforating it and until the punch is Withdrawn.
