COVERED DISH AND SIMILAR ARTICLE Filed May 12, 1930 Patented Oct. 25, 1932 UNITED STATES HARRY J. Matrassen,
OFFICE OF SEBR-ING, OHIO, ASSGNOR T0 THE SEBRNG POTTERY COMIEAN'Y, OF SEBRING, OHTO, A CORPORATION OF 0R10 COVERED DISH AND SIMILAR LRTICLEly Application med May 1a, 193e. serial no. 451,743.
The invention relates to covered dishes and similar articles, and more particularly to a new and improved construction of verge or edge portion of such dishes.
It is present practice in the manufacture of covered dishes and the like to provide a shoulder at the upper open edge of the dish, upon which the cover is adapted to be seated, the verge extending upward around the edge of the shoulder and being so located that the cover fits upon said shoulder and entirely within the verge.
Such a constructionof dish is unsightly when the cover is removed, and furthermore,
vin accordance with recent designs of dinner ware, many of such dishes are formed square or substantially square.
With such shapes difliculty has been experienced in producing covered dishes and the like as there is a great tendency for the dishes to warp and get out of shape in the drying or burning steps of the manufacture, since there is no strengthening or reinforcing structure to hold them in shape.
The object of the present improvement is to overcome the diiiiculties and objections to the present practice by providing a construction of verge which not only reinforces the dish and holds it against warping or getting out of s iape in the drying or burning, but which also produces a much better appearance when the cover is removed from the dish.
The above and other objects may be attained by providing an inwardly disposed, substantially horizontal verge at the upper, open edge of the dish, whereby the cover may extend outward over the edge of the dish, producing a pleasing appearance when the cover is either upon the dish or removed therefrom, as well as reinforcing and bracing the upper edge portion of the dish and holding it in shape while the same is being dried or burned.
An embodiment of the invention is'illustrated in the accompanying drawing, in which Figure 1 is a top plan view of the improved dish, with the cover removed to illustrate the improved form of verge to which the invention pertains; and
Fig. 2, a vertical sectional view of the dish, with the cover thereon, taken as 0n the line 2-2, Fig. 1. Y
Similar numerals refer to similarparts throughout Vthe drawing. i Y f Although the invention relates to various coveredl articles of dinner ware and the like, a covered vegetable dish is shown in the drawings for purposes of illustration. Thisrdish is generally indicated by the numeral 10, and comprises the bottom 11, and side walls 12, which may be of substantially square or rectangular form and slightly bowed outward, conforming to modern designs of dinner ware and thelilre.d
Each of the side walls is provided at its i upper edge with an inturned substantially horizontal verge 13 extending entirely around the upper edge and forming a flat, substantially horizontal, upper edge 15 upon which 70 the flange 16 of the cover 17 may rest, the cover thus entirely covering the verge and extending outward over the edge of the dish. The cover 17 may also be provided with a depending vertical flange 16a inwardly 75 spaced from the flange 16 and adapted to be located within the verge 13 to maint-ain the cover in position.
Thus when the cover is in place upon the dish it has a` more pleasing appearance than the old form of dish in which the cover sits down inside of the verge.
It will also be seen, as shown in Fig. 1, that when the cover is removed the dish has a more linished appearance than the old form of dish.
The principal advantage of this form of verge, however, is that it reinforces and strengthens the plastic dish during the dry ing and burning operations. Particularly in the substantially square or rectangular dishes there is nothing in the old form of dish to hold the plastic material in shape until it is thoroughly dried and burned, while this inturned horizontal vergev strengthens and reinforces the upper open edge of the dish and holds the side walls against warping or distortion until they are completely dried and burned.
I claim:
2?.V Y 1,884,058 Y 1. A covered dish and the like having a bottom and upwardly disposed side walls of substantially rectangular form, an inwardly disposed, substantially horizontal verge at theV upper edge of and extending entirely around each side wall, the upper surface of the verge being substantially horizontal, and a cover having a flange around its outer periplslery, the under surface of the Vflange being su tantially horizontaland adapted to rest Y upon and entirely cover said upper surface of the verge.
2. A covered dish and the like having a bottom and upwardly disposed side walls (of 15 substantially rectangular form, an inwardly disposed, substantially horizontal verge at `the upper edge 'of and extending entirely around each side wall, the upper surface of n said vergebeing substantially horizontal, and o a cover having a substantially horizontal flange around its entire outer periphery and a depending substantially vertical flange inwardly spaced from the ,horizontalVV flange, the horizontal flange being adapted to rest 25 upon and entirely cover the upper surface o the verge, and the verticalflange being adapted to fit inside of the verge.
' In testimony that I claim the above, I have A hereunto subscribed mv name.
