A further object of the invention is to provide such a cutting device with means for preventing the end portions of the strips from accumulating between the ejecting device and the cutting device.
Other objects of the invention will appear as the mechanism is described in detail.
In the accompanying drawings Fig. 1 is a front elevation of a cutting device embodying my invention; Fig. 2 is a transverse sectional view of the same, showing a portion of the press; Fig. 3 is a section taken on the line 3 3 of Fig. 2; and Fig. 4 is a plan view of a portion of the strip which is to be cut.
In these drawings I have illustrated one embodiment of my invention and have shown the same in connection with a punch press but it will be understood that Lthe mechanismema'y take various forms and may be utilized in connection with machines of various kinds.
The scrap cutter is here illustrated in connection with a punch press of the usual construction and comprising a bed plate v 5 which supports the lower die member, and a 4o vertically movable ram 6, which supports the upper die member or punch 7. The press is operated in the usual manner and the strip of material, a portion of which is shown at S, is fed through the press and operated upon by the die members to sever portions thereof, thus leaving a skeleton strip of waste material, such as is shown in Fig. 4. In order that this waste material or scrap may be conveniently handled yand disposed desirable that the same should be cut into relatively small pieces. Arranged beyond the die members is a feeding-out or ejecting device which cooperates in feeding the strips through the press and which serves to eject the same afterit has fully passed the die. In the present construction, this ejecting device is shown as comprising a lower feed roller 9 andr anl upperfeed roller 10. A These rollers are operated intermittently in the usual manner to cause the strip to be advanced between the operations of the dies and to be held stationary while the dies are acting thereon.
In applying my invention to this press I have provided a pair of cooperating cutting members which are arranged beyond the feeding rollers or ejecting devices?) and 10. Preferably a vertical frame 11 is rigidly secured to a fixed part of the press, and in the present instance, is carried by brackets 12 which are rigidly secured to the housing 13 which encloses the lower feeding out roller. Rigidly secured to this frame is a cutting member, here shown as a cutter bar 14;, and j the side portions of the frame extend upwardly beyond this cutting member and are provided with guideways 15 in which is slidably mounted a second frame or carriage 16. Mounted on this carriage is a second cutting member or blade 17 so arranged that when downward movement is imparted to the carriage the blade'17 will be moved into operative relation to the cutter bar 14 and the strip extending between these members will be v severed. 'Ihe side portions of the carriage preferably extend for a considerable distance below the blade 17, as shown at 16a, to rmly guide the carriage in the guideway 15.
- The carriage may be operated in any suitable manner but preferably its movements are controlled by the ram of the press. The carriage is moved downwardly, and effects the cutting operation, in properly timed relation to the movements of the ej ecting rollers 9 and 10 and for this lpurpose I prefer to i provide a positive connection between the ram and the carriage which will cause the second or upper cutting member to move in unison with the ram. As here shown, an arm 22 is rigidly connected with the ram and has its outer end arranged above and connected with the carriage. The connection may take various forms and as illustrated, comprises a screw 18 extending through the end of the arm and having its lower portion threaded into the carriage, the latter having a rearwardly extending flange 19 provided with a thickened portion 20 to receive the screw, and, if desired, a rubber washer 21 may be interposed between the head of the screw and the upper surface of the arm. Screws 23 are mounted in the carriage on opposite sides of and in spaced relation to the screw 18 and the upper ends or heads thereof have supporting contact with the lower surface of the arm 22 so as to maintain the carriage and the arm in proper relation and to protect the `Screw 18 against twisting strains. By adjusting the screws 18 and 23 the carriage may be adjusted with relation to the arm and to the ram.
The press is provided with a strip supporting table 24, a portion of which is arranged between the ejecting rollers and the cutting mechanism, the lower roller projecting slightly above the surface of this table. When the rearend of the strip has been moved beyond the ej ecting rollers it will drop onto the table and will not be further actuated by the feeding rollers, such an end portion being 'shown at 25 in Fig. 2. Because of the thin character of the strips it is not practicalk to so arrange the table that a succeeding strip will abut this severed end portion of a preceding strip and eject the same and I have therefore provided means actuated by the forward end of a succeeding strip for ejecting the end portion of a preceding strip and thus causing the end portion of the preceding strip to be moved between the cutting members. Preferably this means comprises a roller 26 which is yieldably supported between the ejecting rollers and the cutting mechanism and is arranged to be actuated by the strip which is being advanced by the ejecting rollers and to frictionally engage the end portion of the preceding strip and move the same between the cutting members. As vhere shown, the shaft 27 of the roller is slidably mounted in vertical slots 28 formed in brackets 29 carried by the frame 11.y This roller is preferably of friction material, such asfelt. Ordinarily the weight of ythe roller itself will be sufficient to establish the desired frictional contact between the same and the portion of the preceding strip which is to be ejected but obviously additional means could be provided for increasing ythis pressure if desired. The felt roller may be provided with circumferential inserts 30 of rubber, or other suitable material, to engage the relatively narrow lateral portions of the strips, on the opposite sides of the openings therein, and which will wear away less rapidly than the felt. i
It will be noted that when a strip has moved past the ejecting rollers the end portion thereof will rest upon the table 2-1, below the top of the lower ejecting roller, as shown at 25, and the roller 26 will be in frictional engagement therewith. As a succeeding strip is advanced by the ejecting rollers the forward end thereof will engage the friction roller 26 and will rotate that roller in a direction to move the endportion 25 between the cutting members in advance of the succeeding' strip.
1While I have shown and described one embodiment of my invention it will be understood that I do not desire to be limited to the details thereof as various modifications may roccur to a person skilled in the art.
Having now fully described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is:
1. The combination with a machine havinfr K f means for operating on a strip of material to sever portions thereof, mea-ns to eject the strip after it has been so operated upon, and a cutting device arranged `icyond said ejecting means to act on the ejected strip, of another device arranged to engage a portion of a strip which is located between said ejecting means and said cutting device `and adapted to be actuated by a succeeding strip to move said portion of the preceding strip to said cutting device.
2. The combination with a machine having means for operating on a strip of material to sever portions thereof, means to eject the strip after ,it has been so operated upon, and a cutting device arranged beyond said eject- .ing means to act on the ejected strip, of a roller yieldably supported for contact with a portion of a strip located between said ejecting means and said cutting device and arranged to be actuated by a strip which is being advanced by said ej ectiiig means to move said portion of the preceding strip to said cutting device.
3. The combination with a machine having means for operating on a strip of material to sever portions thereof, superimposed feeding rollers to eject the strip after it has been operated upon, anda cutting device arranged beyond said ejecting means to act on the ejected strip, of a strip supporting table having a portion arranged between said feeding rollers and said cutting device, and below the level of the upper surface of the lower feeding roller, whereby the end portion of a strip which has passed said feeding rollers will be supported by said table, and a device yieldably supported above said portion of said tableto engage said end portion and arranged to be actuated by a succeeding i? strip to impart movement to said. end portion of the preceding strip.
4. The combination with' a machine having meansfor operating on a strip of material to sever portions thereof, superimposed feeding rollers to eject the strip after it has been operated upon, and a cutting device arranged beyond said ejecting means to act on the ejected strip, of a strip supporting table having a portion arranged between said feeding rollers and said cutting device, and below the level of the upper surface of the lower feeding roller, whereby the end portion of a strip Which has passed said feeding rollers will be supported by said table, and a roller of yieldable material mounted abovesaid portion of said table to engage said end portion of said strip and arranged to be actuated by a strip which is being advanced by said feeding rollers, and to move said end portion of the preceding strip to said cutting device.
5. The combination with a machine having means for operating on a strip of material to sever portions thereof, means to eject the strip after it has been so operated upon, and a cutting device arranged beyond said ejecting means to act on the ejected strip, of a roller yieldably supported for contact with a portion of a strip located between said ejecting means and said cutting device and arranged to be actuated by a strip Which is being advanced by said ejecting means to move said portion of the preceding strip to said cutting device, said roller comprising a body portion of felt and having circumferential portions of rubber near the respective ends thereof.
