This invention relates to an arrangement of steam circulators for cross drum boilers and will be understood from the description in connection with the accompanying draw ing, in which Fig. 1 is a vertical section through an illustrative embodiment of the invention and Fig. 2 is a section aiong the line 2 2 of Fig. 1.
In the drawing reference character A indicates a cross steam and water drum of a water tube boiler. A bank of inclined tubes 5 is connected to uptake headers 6 and downtake headers 7 in the usual manner and baffies extend across the tubes 5 to provide passes for the hot gases from the furnace.
Nipples 8 connect the upper ends of the downtake headers 7 to the Water space of the steam and water drum 4 and nipples 9 connect the upper ends of the uptake headers 6 to the lOWer ends of boxes, or short headers 10.
A row of circulating tubes 11 extend from the upper portion of the uptake headers 6 to the steam space of the steam and water drum 4 and one or more rows of tubes 12 extend from the boxes 10 to the steam space of the steam and water drum 4:.
The operation is as follows:
Steam is generated in the usuai manner in the tubes 5 and the mixture of steam and water passes upwardly through the headers 6. A portion of the mixture passes through the row of tubes 11 into the steam and water drum and another portion passes through the nipples 9 into the'boxes 10 and thence through the tubes 12 to the steam and water drum 4.
One mode of taking care of steam and water separation in boilers involves the use of steam and water drums which take care of the entire separation. In such cases no particular type of connections from the uptake headers to the drum is necessary.
A second mode of solving the problem of steam and water separation in boilers involves the use of such horizontal circulators as those shown at 12 in the drawing of this case. Nhen such circulators are horizontal, and the velocity of the steam and water is not too great, there is such steam and Water separation in these circulators that the discharge into the drum takes place without sputtering. This has been proven by actual experiment; Ifthe rate of steaming is increased, there is not suficient time for such steam and water separation to take place in the circulators. The combination disclosed and claimed in this application overcomes this dificulty of obtaining at high steaming rates, adequate separation in the steam circulators. In this combination there are contractions formed by the nipples 9 in the uptake passages. These contractions 0perate to cause the tubes 11 to take their share of the total steam and water mixture proceeding to the drum 4. The consequent uniform distribution of the mixture flow through the tubes 1.1 and 12 provides for su'lficient time for separation to takeplace in the horizontal portions of all of the circulators.
Applicants combination not only provides adequate flow area in the circulators, but prevents unequal circulator velocities whereby the upper circulators would effect materially less separation or no separation at all.
The invention is especially useful in locations where it is desirable to increase the effective area of the circulating tubes between the uptake headers and the steam and water drum in a boiler of this type withoutincreasing the height of the boiler, or where the headers would be too long for shipment or other purpose, or where it is desired to make the headers shorter, using nipples to connect these headers to other headers and circulators to connect the other headers to the steam and Water drum, thereby decreasing the flow resistance.
WVhere uptake headers and downtake headers are mentioned in the specification and claims it is to be understood that these expressions are intended to include also water legs that may be used. Changes and modifications can be made without departing from the spirit or scope of the invention.
I claim:
1. In a water tube boiler, a steam and Water drum, downtake and uptake header constructions connected by inclined steam generating tubes, horizontal main circulators connecting the top ofthe uptake header construction with the steam and water drum, means afiording an uptake passage contraction just beneath said circulators, an auxiliary circulator leading from the uptake header construction at a position beneath the contraction to the steam and Water drum, the auxiliary circulator being horizontal throughout the maj or portion of its length.
2. In a Water tube steam boiler, a steam and water drum, uptake and downtake headers, inclined tubes connecting the headers, boxes located above the uptake headers, nipples directly connecting the uptake headers and the boxes so as to provide a composite uptake passage with contractions at the nipples and enlargements above and beloW the contractions, main horizontal circulators directly connecting the boxes andthe drum and auxiliary circulators directly connecting the drum with the uptake headers at positions just beneath the nipples, the auxiliary circulators being horizontal for the major portions of their lengths.
